Moving Toward a Positive Birth: The Protective Role of Psychological Capital in Shaping Childbirth Experiences.

PURPOSE: Positive childbirth experiences (CBEs) impact maternal and child well-being, but many women, particularly those of low socioeconomic status, report negative or traumatic births. This mixed-methods longitudinal study investigated whether and how psychological capital-a psychological construct composed of hope, self-efficacy, resilience, and optimism-moderates the associations between birth complications, birth trauma, and perceived own capacity, a critical indicator of positive CBEs. METHODS: Mixed-methods data were extracted from a prospective longitudinal perinatal cohort study of b

Links Among High EPDS Scores, State of Mind Regarding Attachment, and Symptoms of Personality Disorder.

Underlying persistent psychological difficulties have been found to moderate potential adverse effects of maternal postpartum depression (PPD) on parenting and infant development. The authors examined whether mothers presenting postpartum depressive symptoms showed higher levels of personality pathology and more insecure state of mind regarding attachment compared to nondepressed mothers. Participants (N = 85) were assessed with the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS), the Present State Examination, the Adult Attachment Interview, and the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV Axis I

Expatriate mental health.

This paper reviews the historical aspects of expatriate mental health, and comments on the paucity of literature in the medical and psychiatric journals. Data obtained from 397 expatriate probands examined during overseas service are described. It was noted that there was a high incidence of affective and adjustment disorders. The results showed six areas significantly related to those with affective disorders at interview, namely a history of consultation for psychological problems in out-patient departments or with the patient's own doctor, a history of depressed mood, and a family history o

Distress in patients with interstitial cystitis: Do illness representations have a role to play?

This study investigated the illness perceptions of patients with interstitial cystitis (IC) and their experience of psychological distress using the Revised Illness Perceptions Questionnaire (IPQ-R). The extent to which this measure adequately captures the illness representations of this group was also evaluated through semi-structured interviews. Forty-four patients with IC attending an out-patient clinic at a large UK hospital completed a questionnaire booklet comprising of the IPQ-R and the General Health Questionnaire-28 (GHQ-28). Fifteen patients also took part in a follow-up interview. P

AIMS: We explored factors influencing psychological safety among Black breast and ovarian cancer patients and their family members. METHODS: Socioeconomically diverse patients with a personal diagnosis or family history of breast and/or ovarian cancer were invited to complete a

Feasibility and acceptability of a brief intervention to improve mild traumatic brain injury recovery: Problem-solving training-concussion.

OBJECTIVE: Mild traumatic brain injuries (mTBIs) are common among Veterans. Although the majority of neurobehavioral symptoms resolve following mTBI, studies with Veteran samples demonstrate a high frequency and chronicity of neurobehavioral complaints (e.g., difficulties with attention, frustration tolerance) often attributed to mTBI. Recent opinions suggest the primacy of mental health treatment, and existing mTBI practice guidelines promote patient-centered intervention beginning in primary care (PC). However, trial evidence regarding effective clinical management in PC is lacking. This stu

WADD-SEPD Consensus on Psychological Treatment of Dual Disorders I: General Recommendations, Most Used Therapies, and Severe Mental Disorders.

Background/Objectives: The treatment of dual disorders (DDs) must be comprehensive and multidisciplinary. There is evidence supporting the effectiveness of psychotherapy in their treatment. However, clinical guidelines, consensus statements, and reviews on the treatment of DDs typically devote considerably less space to psychological therapy than to pharmacological therapy. Therefore, this work aimed to synthesize the available evidence, recommendations, and clinical experience on the psychological treatment of DDs to reach a consensus. Methods: Two consensus methods were sequentially implemen

Novel Definitions of Wellness and Distress among Family Caregivers of Patients with Acute Cardiorespiratory Failure: A Qualitative Study.

Rationale: Family caregivers of patients with acute cardiorespiratory failure are at high risk for distress, which is typically defined as the presence of psychological symptoms such as anxiety, depression, or posttraumatic stress. Interventions to reduce caregiver distress and increase wellness have been largely ineffective to date. An incomplete understanding of caregiver wellness and distress may hinder efforts at developing effective support interventions. Objectives: To allow family caregivers to define their experiences of wellness and distress 6 months after patient intensive care unit

Detection of Microbehavior Intervals for Predicting Mental Health: Clinically Relevant and Advanced Multimodal Temporal Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Health care workers (HCWs) face sustained psychological demands that place them at heightened risk for burnout and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). However, assessing psychological distress in this population remains challenging because of stigma, underreporting, and the limitations of self-report tools. Although nonverbal behaviors such as facial expressions and gaze hold diagnostic promise, most approaches overlook the fine-grained, temporal fluctuations in these signals. In this study, we focused on microbehavior intervals-brief, involuntary changes in multimodal nonverbal
