Intestinal atresia is an under-diagnosed congenital defect in cattle. It results in complete occlusion of the intestinal lumen and, unless surgically corrected, results in death or euthanasia of the affected calf. There is limited information on the incidence of this condition or on risk factors, including predisposing alleles, associated with the defect. In this study, active surveillance of 39 dairy farms over 8 years identified 197 cases of intestinal atresia among 56 454 calves born, an incidence of 0.35%. The majority of cases (83%) had occlusion of the jejunum, although cases with blocka…

Hereditary multiple intestinal atresia (HMIA) is a rare form of intestinal atresia that affects the gastrointestinal tract from the pylorus to the rectum. A few cases have been reported in the literature. Here, we report the case of a three-day-old girl who was referred to our hospital as a case of upper intestinal obstruction. After initial resuscitation, the radiological examination revealed pyloric obstruction, multiple intra-abdominal calcifications, and rectal atresia making the diagnosis of HMIA most likely. Exploratory laparotomy revealed multiple intestinal atresia, the first started a…

INTRODUCTION: Neonatal surgical diseases are prime examples of the global disparity in surgical access and outcomes, with survival for conditions like gastroschisis reaching above 95% in high-income settings but usually fatal in low-income settings. This study aims to examine outcomes and predictors of mortality in patients with two specific neonatal surgical conditions that often require early transfer and prolonged inpatient care (gastroschisis and intestinal atresia) at Rwanda's main pediatric referral hospital.
METHODS: A single-institution retrospective chart review of neonates with gast…

Hereditary multiple intestinal atresia is a rare syndrome with an autosomal recessive pattern of inheritance. We described the antenatal sonographic appearance of a case of hereditary multiple intestinal atresia. A markedly dilated cystic mass noncommunicating with the stomach was observed in the right upper quadrant of the fetal abdomen by an ultrasound scan at 30 weeks of gestation. Real-time sonographic evidence of strong peristaltic activity was not demonstrated. The infant weighing 2315 g was delivered at 35 week's gestation with Apgar scores of 7 and 9 at 1 and 5 minutes, respectively. A…

Microcephalus and atresia of the small intestines can be demonstrated by ultrasonic examination. Malformations can occur at any time during pregnancy. The reasons for it are hard to find. A single diagnostic including ultrasonic investigations, chromosome analysis and alpha-fetoprotein determination in the amniotic fluid during the first half of pregnancy is unsufficient and leads to pseudosecurity. The ultrasonic investigation by an experienced means a marked enrichment of the prenatal diagnostic. Every ultrasonic examination during pregnancy should consider these diagnostic possibilities.

AIM: We aimed to investigate prevalence, associated anomalies and survival of congenital intestinal atresia and to examine maternal risk factors for jejunoileal atresia (JIA).
METHODS: All children born with, or pregnancies terminated because of, JIA or colonic atresia (CA) in Finland during 1987-2019 were identified from the Finnish Register of Congenital Malformations. Clinical information was obtained from national health registers. Maternal risk factors were assessed using all JIA cases from 2004 to 2017 (n = 101). For each case, five appropriately matched live-born controls were selected…

Congenital intestinal atresia (IA) is a birth defect characterised by the absence or closure of part of the intestine. Although genetic factors are implicated, mechanistic understanding has been hindered by the lack of suitable animal models. Here, we describe a medaka (Oryzias latipes) mutant, generated by N-ethyl-N-nitrosourea (ENU) mutagenesis, that develops IA during embryogenesis. Positional cloning identified a nonsense mutation in mypt1, encoding myosin phosphatase target subunit 1. Mutant embryos exhibited ectopic accumulation of F-actin and phosphorylated myosin regulatory light chain…

BACKGROUND: Small bowel atresia is a leading cause of neonatal intestinal obstruction and is frequently associated with postoperative gastrointestinal dysmotility. While factors like enteric nervous system alterations have been studied, the role of interstitial cells of Cajal (ICCs), the gut's pacemaker cells, remains under-investigated.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to assess the density and distribution of ICCs in the atretic, proximal, and distal bowel segments in neonates with small bowel atresia and correlate their presence with postoperative outcomes.
METHODS: A prospective study was con

Jan Hendrik Louw (1915-1992), considered the father of pediatric surgery in South Africa, gained prominence for his work on congenital intestinal atresia, a condition that had a mortality as high as 75 percent. His hypothesis, that jejunoileal atresia arose from mesenteric circulatory accidents in utero, was the dominant view until recent research uncovered the involvement of genetic and embryological mechanisms. In the mid-1950s he was one of a number of surgeons to resect the enlarged bulbous segment proximal to the site of the atresia, a crucial step in the surgical approach to intestinal a…

INTRODUCTION: Surgical management of jejuno-ileal atresia/stenosis (JIA) is shifting to a minimally invasive approach. Our purpose is to evaluate the safety and feasibility of laparoscopy-assisted surgery (LAS) in JIA by comparing outcomes with a control group of open surgery (OS).
METHODS: A retrospective review of JIA cases was performed. Demographic, surgical, and outcomes data were extracted. LAS cases were compared with OS. Fisher's exact-test for qualitative and Mann-Whitney-test for quantitative values were used. p values <0.05 were considered significant.
RESULTS: Forty-seven patient

Anorectal malformations (ARMs) commonly co-occur with other congenital anomalies, particularly VACTERL (vertebral, anorectal, cardiac, tracheal, esophageal, renal, limb, and duodenal) associations. However, this collection of associations is not comprehensive, and other concurrent anomalies may exist that can be missed during the standard work-up of patients with ARMs. We present a rare case of a neonate with a low ARM with concurrent jejuno-ileal atresia that was diagnosed after the correction of the ARM when the patient developed segmental volvulus. This case illustrates the importance of ha

Fetal intestinal volvulus is a rare life-threatening condition usually manifesting after birth with most cases being associated with intestinal malrotation. It appears on prenatal sonography (US) as a twisting of the bowel loops around the mesenteric artery, leading to mechanical obstruction and ischemic necrosis of the bowel. We report a case of intrauterine intestinal volvulus with ileal atresia, suspected when US revealed a typical "whirlpool" sign at 37 weeks' gestation, with a segment of markedly distended bowel loops and small amount of fetal ascites.

OBJECTIVE: To describe the prevalence, associated anomalies, prenatal diagnosis, and survival of cases of congenital small intestinal atresia (SIA).
METHOD: Data were extracted from the Northern Congenital Abnormality Survey (NorCAS) for cases delivered during 1991 to 2001.
RESULTS: A total of 99 cases of SIA were notified from 372 717 registered births. Twenty-five (25.8%) SIA cases were associated with a chromosomal anomaly. Of the 72 SIA cases with normal karyotype, 18 (25%) were associated with other structural anomalies. The total prevalence for all SIA cases over the 11 years was 2.66 …

There have been several reports of umbilical cord ulcer (UCU) associated with congenital intestinal atresia, many cases of which have been reported with fetal or neonatal death. Herein is described the case of a fetus with jejunal atresia complicated by acute massive intrauterine hemorrhage due to the perforation of UCU resulting in an intact survival. Although the onset of critical condition in the present case was noted due to continuous fetal heart rate (FHR) monitoring, it is necessary to establish the management of congenital intestinal atresia to prevent this life-threatening fetal hemor…
