Data is presented regarding 20 translocated intrauterine contraceptive devices (IUCD). Successful laparoscopic removal was made in 13 (65%) cases though all these devices were Copper 'T' 200 model which tend to produce dense adhesions. Only when the IUCD was suspected to be partially or fully in the gut lumen or thick adhesions were present, or the device was not visualised, was laparotomy performed. Hence it is advocated that laparoscopy should be performed as a routine in patients with suspected translocated IUCD, as it obviates the need for laparotomy and thus decreases the duration of the

The efficacy and side effects of 6 different IUDs used by 790 women during 22826 menstrual cycles is reported. The conclusion is that modern IUDs have a negligible effect on the health of users if properly followed by regular checkups.

Cervical and vaginal smears in 300 women using (a) intrauterine devices (IUD) and in 300 age matched control subjects (b), have been examined. In women using IUD, endometrial cells have been observed also in the second half of menstrual cycle, conversely these cells are present in women belonging to the control group, just in the first half of the cycle. Pattern of cervico-vaginitis due to Chlamydiae, Actinomyces and Eubacteria have been observed in higher percentage in women IUD wearers 58% of (a) group and 19.3% of (b) group (P less than 0.005). These patterns have often been characterized b…

Papanicolaou-stained cervicovaginal smears from 478 women with intrauterine contraceptive devices (IUDs) in place were reviewed for the presence of Actinomyces colonies. The overall infection rate was 12.6%. Plastic IUDs had a significantly higher infection rate than that of Copper 7 IUDs. The infection rate was found to increase with the duration of use of IUDs. The presence or absence of Actinomyces was not related to age, race, parity, previous abortions, or financial status of the patients.

Four cases of ovarian pregnancy, occurring over a two-year period in the same hospital, are presented. Each case fulfills Spiegelberg's criteria. Each patient conceived with Cu-7 intrauterine contraceptive device (IUD) in situ. Review of the literature reveals an apparent increase in the frequency of ovarian pregnancy associated with IUD's. This aspect of the problem, as well as the management of this unusual type of ectopic pregnancy, is discussed. The data available do not justify a conclusion that ovarian pregnancies are caused by IUD's. Unless future studies demonstrate a cause-and-effect

A series of 10 instances of genital actinomycosis infection complicating the use of intrauterine contraceptive devices is recorded and its pathogenesis described. The likelihood is suggested that this complication is more frequent than is generally appreciated. A pathway of infection extending upward from the patient's anus, across the perineum, and up the vagina and cervix is suggested as the route of infection. The traumatizing effect of the device and a previously existing or intercurrent infection as additional contributing factors to the development of actinomycotic infection in the femal

Biofilms are colonies of microbial cells encased in a self-produced organic polymeric matrix and represent a common mode of microbial growth. Microbes growing as biofilm are highly resistant to commonly used antimicrobial drugs. We aimed to screen and characterize biofilm formation by different isolates of Candida on removed intrauterine devices (IUDs), to perform experimental biofilm formation with isolated strains, and to examine biofilm by the crystal violet and XTT reduction assays and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). A total of 56 IUDs were examined for biofilm formation using Sabourau…

The relationship between use of an intrauterine device (IUD) and pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) has been studied extensively over the past 50 years. Previous research has led to considerable controversy and debate. Numerous limitations in the studies make it difficult to draw any firm conclusions from the past research or to design new approaches to study the topic. The main research barriers include uncertainty of infection/diagnoses, and inappropriate comparison groups for IUD users. Natural history studies of the aetiology of disease and observational research among IUD users suggest tha

BACKGROUND: Insertion of an intrauterine device (IUD) immediately after delivery is appealing for several reasons. The woman is known not to be pregnant, her motivation for contraception may be high, and the setting may be convenient for both the woman and her provider. However, the risk of spontaneous expulsion may be unacceptably high.
OBJECTIVES: To assess the efficacy and feasibility of IUD insertion immediately after expulsion of the placenta. Our a priori hypothesis was that this practice is safe but associated with higher expulsion rates than interval IUD insertion.

BACKGROUND: The appropriateness of IUDs for adolescents remains unsettled, as does the definition of the term adolescent. Unplanned pregnancy among teenagers remains epidemic, and long-acting methods, such as IUDs, offer the promise of top-tier effectiveness.
STUDY DESIGN: We conducted a systematic review of the literature concerning IUD use in adolescents using MEDLINE, Popline, EMBASE and CINAHL databases.
RESULTS: Six cohort studies and seven case-series reports met our inclusion criteria; none included IUDs in current use in the United States. Overall, continuation rates were high and cu

BACKGROUND: Insertion of an intrauterine device (IUD) immediately after an abortion has several potential advantages. The woman is known not to be pregnant, a major concern for clinicians. For example, many clinicians refuse to insert an IUD in a woman who is not menstruating [Stanback 1997]. After induced abortion, a woman's motivation to use contraception may be high. Among women who have limited access to a clinician, abortion care may provide a unique opportunity to address a woman's need for contraception [Mahomed 1997; McLaurin 1993; Wolf 1994]. A copper IUD confers nearly the same contr

The incidence of intrauterine device (IUD)-associated cervicovaginal actinomycosis was evaluated. Papanicolaou-stained cervicovaginal smears from 1,520 women with IUDs were reviewed for the presence of Actinomyces-like organisms. The overall colonization rate was 11.4%. The colonization rates for the Progestasert, plastic IUDs and copper IUDs were 14.3%, 10.8% and 6.69%, respectively. The colonization rate appeared to increase with the duration of IUD use. The relatively high cervicovaginal Actinomyces colonization rate suggests that all patients with IUDs should undergo annual cytologic smear
