Intuitive Cell Manipulation Microscope System with Haptic Device for Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection Simplification.

In recent years, the demand for effective intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) for the treatment of male infertility has increased. The ICSI operation is complicated as it involves delicate organs and requires a high level of skill. Several cell manipulation systems that do not require such skills have been proposed; notably, several automated methods are available for cell rotation. However, these methods are unfeasible for the delicate ICSI medical procedure because of safety issues. Thus, this study proposes a microscopic system that enables intuitive micropipette manipulation using a ha

Adaptive depends on context: An examination of the Intuitive Eating Scale-2 in an eating disorder sample.

Though there is a robust literature base linking intuitive eating (IE) to better psychological health and reduced eating pathology, little is known about the psychometric properties of IES-2 measurement or how IE relates to eating psychopathology within eating disorder clinical samples. Importantly, some seemingly adaptive eating behaviors in non-clinical populations could conceivably result from disordered eating within clinical eating disorder populations (e.g., not eating when not hungry because of distorted hunger-fullness cues, furthering restriction). This study examined the factor struc

Intuitive geometry and visuospatial working memory in children showing symptoms of nonverbal learning disabilities.

Visuospatial working memory (VSWM) and intuitive geometry were examined in two groups aged 11-13, one with children displaying symptoms of nonverbal learning disability (NLD; n = 16), and the other, a control group without learning disabilities (n = 16). The two groups were matched for general verbal abilities, age, gender, and socioeconomic level. The children were presented with simple storage and complex-span tasks involving VSWM and with the intuitive geometry task devised by Dehaene, Izard, Pica, and Spelke (2006 ). Results revealed that the two groups differed in the intuitive geometry t

Reading others emotions: The role of intuitive judgments in predicting marital satisfaction, quality, and stability.

This study examined links between emotion expression in couple interactions and marital quality and stability. Core aspects of emotion expression in marital interactions were identified with the use of naive observational coding by multiple raters. Judges rated 47 marital discussions with 15 emotion descriptors. Coders' pooled ratings yielded good reliability on 4 types of emotion expression: hostility, distress, empathy, and affection. These 4 types were linked with concurrent marital satisfaction and interviewer ratings of marital adjustment as well as with marital stability at a 5-year foll

Gut feelings in obstetrics and midwifery: the role of intuition in deciding when to perform cesarean section during labor.

PURPOSE: To describe the role of intuition for maternity care workers in deciding when a cesarean section should be advised during labor. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Focus group discussions with midwives and gynecologists, and nonparticipating observation at an obstetric ward. RESULTS: The decision about when to propose a cesarean section during labor is the result of interaction between objective and intuitive factors. Junior delivery ward workers report that they use more analytic reasoning for objective diagnosis of fetal distress, non-progressive labor, macrosomia or other indications for cesa…

Intuitive Risk Equation for Post-Transplant Bloodstream Infection Prediction: A Symbolic Regression Approach.

Background: Liver transplant recipients are highly susceptible to infectious complications due to surgical invasiveness and immunosuppressive therapy, and post-transplant bloodstream infection is associated with substantial morbidity and mortality. Although several prediction models for bloodstream infection have been proposed, most focus on emergency department or general ward populations and rely on black-box approaches. This limits their applicability and clinical interpretability in liver transplant settings. Therefore, this study aimed to develop predictive models for post-transplant bloo

Preferred visual experiences provide intuitive descriptions of the functional properties of the cortical navigation network.

Complex, high-dimensional brain representations are often difficult to understand intuitively. Recent advances in generative neural networks have made it possible to predict the optimal stimulus that maximizes the activity in a specific brain region. Because these stimuli are in image space, they provide an intuitive understanding of the functional properties of that region. Previous work on optimized stimuli has focused on passive perceptual tasks. Yet real-world perception operates in a closed loop with cognition and action, and so passive stimuli are unlikely to be optimal for many brain re

Motor Skill Learning of a Racing Video Game With Intuitive versus Inverted and Random Controls.

AIM: Motor skill learning relies on increasing proficiency to translate sensory feedback to produce an updated motor command. This experience-dependent process allows our automatic movements to lead to an expected result-this is known as an "internal model." Video games provide a structured environment for studying these processes, as they typically develop stable sensory-motor relationships (or internal models) within the brain. PURPOSE: This study examined how disrupting these internal models with two different non-intuitive joystick control schemes affected short-term motor learning during

Toward more intuitive prosthetic control: structured residual muscle training in transtibial amputees.

BACKGROUND: Myoelectric control of lower-limb prostheses is challenging due to residual muscle co-contraction, inconsistent activation, and signal variability. Evidence regarding the efficacy of training interventions targeting residual muscle activation in transtibial amputees (TTAs) to enhance prosthetic control remains limited. This study investigated whether a 4-week structured training could improve residual muscle control in TTAs. METHODS: Nine male unilateral TTAs were assigned to either (A) biofeedback training with daily home exercises or (B) home exercises alone. Biofeedback sessions

Design and Preliminary Evaluation of a Hand-Held Surgical Robot for Enhanced Intuitive Control in Laparoscopy.

BACKGROUND: Surgical robots offer improved precision and stability for laparoscopy; nevertheless, their limited portability and high cost impede broader clinical applications. METHODS: This paper proposes a hand-held surgical robot with an ergonomic handle and isomorphic kinematics to enhance intuitive operability and portability. A preliminary evaluation was conducted through simulated suture tasks, assessing operation time, precision, muscle activity, and cognitive load. RESULTS: Compared to conventional instruments, the hand-held robot enabled novices (n = 8) to suture significantly faste

The ecological validity of the Intuitive Eating Scale-2 among adults with binge-eating disorder.

OBJECTIVE: This study examined the ecological validity of the Intuitive Eating Scale-2 (IES-2) facets among adults with binge-eating disorder (BED) and subthreshold BED (SBED) by assessing how IES-2 subscales predict positive and negative affect, body satisfaction, hunger and satiety sensitivity, eating self-efficacy, and binge-eating symptoms measured via ecological momentary assessment (EMA). METHOD: The sample included 50 adults with BED/SBED who completed the IES-2 and 14 days of EMA data collection. Generalized linear mixed models examined IES-2 subscales (eating for physical rather than

The neural basis of intuitive approximate number system in board game Go (Baduk) experts.

Studies have shown that newborns and nonhuman animals innately estimate quantities using the approximate number system (ANS), raising questions about whether the ANS is a precursor to advanced computational abilities or an independent cognitive function. Professional board game Go players, who can quickly judge territory sizes without explicit calculations, provide a unique insight into the ANS. Using fMRI, we investigated the neural correlates of the approximate number system in professional Go players. Results showed that during the difficult task, professional Go players exhibited significa

Intuitive eating predictors and outcomes in people with severe mental illness participating in a lifestyle intervention.

ISSUE ADDRESSED: People with severe mental illness (SMI) are at higher risk of preventable diseases than the general population; poor diet contributes to heightened risk. Adaptive approaches designed to improve intuitive eating may improve dietary behaviours in people with SMI. Aims of this study were to investigate predictors of, and assess the impact of a nutrition program on, intuitive eating in people with SMI. METHODS: This was a retrospective analysis of an exercise and nutrition program for people with SMI. The primary outcome was intuitive eating assessed using the Intuitive Eating Sc

Possible counter-intuitive impact of local vaccine mandates for vaccine-preventable infectious diseases.

We modeled the impact of local vaccine mandates on the spread of vaccine-preventable infectious diseases, which in the absence of vaccines will mainly affect children. Examples of such diseases are measles, rubella, mumps, and pertussis. To model the spread of the pathogen, we used a stochastic SIR (susceptible, infectious, recovered) model with two levels of mixing in a closed population, often referred to as the household model. In this model, individuals make local contacts within a specific small subgroup of the population (e.g., within a household or a school class), while they also make

Testing Clinical Intuitions About Barriers to Improvement in Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy for Panic Disorder.

Although clinical intuitions influence psychotherapeutic practice and are a rich source of novel hypotheses for research, many remain to be empirically tested. This study evaluates whether clinicians' beliefs about barriers to progress in cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) for panic disorder are supported by data. Data from a randomized-controlled trial comparing CBT to panic-focused psychodynamic psychotherapy (PFPP) for adults with primary panic disorder (N = 161) were used to evaluate 15 factors endorsed by clinicians as impediments to CBT in a recent survey. Panic severity was assessed bef…

Intuitive Hand-held Instrument for Loose Body Removal in Arthroscopic Synovial Chondromatosis Surgery.

In order to treat synovial chondromatosis in minimally invasive way, the loose bodies in the joint cavity should be removed with arthroscopic surgery. However, since the joint cavity is narrow and round, it is difficult to approach with conventional straight surgical tools. To overcome this, existing studies have proposed motorized steerable surgical instruments, but they do not provide haptic feedback and intuitive understanding of the position of the end-effector. In this paper, we developed a motorless steerable arthroscopic surgery instrument. It was designed with the ergonomic aspects for

Can patients with eating disorders learn to eat intuitively? A 2-year pilot study.

The present article reports on a 2-year pilot study that evaluated the effectiveness of an intuitive eating program for patients in an eating disorder treatment center. Standardized measures of intuitive eating and eating disorder and psychological symptoms were administered. Psychotherapists and dietitians rated patients on the healthiness of their eating attitudes and behaviors. Preliminary findings indicated that patients can develop the skills of intuitive eating, and that the ability to eat intuitively is associated with positive treatment outcomes for each diagnostic category (i.e., anor

German version of the intuitive eating scale: Psychometric evaluation and application to an eating disordered population.

Intuitive eating has been described to represent an adaptive eating behaviour that is characterised by eating in response to physiological hunger and satiety cues, rather than situational and emotional stimuli. The Intuitive Eating Scale-2 (IES-2) has been developed to measure such attitudes and behaviours on four subscales: unconditional permission to eat (UPE), eating for physical rather than emotional reasons (EPR), reliance on internal hunger and satiety cues (RHSC), and body-food choice congruence (B-FCC). The present study aimed at validating the psychometric properties of the German tra

The inherence heuristic: an intuitive means of making sense of the world, and a potential precursor to psychological essentialism.
