Iris nodules in neurofibromatosis I have become an important tool in the differential diagnosis of phakomatoses. The clinical appearance and importance of these nodules first recognized by Karl Lisch in Munich in 1937. The diagnosis and differential diagnosis of Lisch nodules are illustrated. The importance of iris nodules in genetic counselling of patients and their relatives is discussed, with emphasis on monosymptomatic cases. Histologically Lisch nodules are formed by aggregations of oval to round cells that form dome-shaped papules on the anterior layer of the iris. Immunohistochemically

A 67-year-old woman examined 12 months following extracapsular cataract extraction had a massive pseudophakic pigment dispersion associated with diffuse corneal epithelial edema, mild uveitis, and secondary glaucoma. She underwent penetrating keratoplasty following removal of a posterior chamber intraocular lens (IOL), anterior vitrectomy, capsulectomy, and iris biopsy. Histopathologic examination revealed a pigmented iris nevus and signs of iris erosion by the IOL loop. Because 3 months later the eye developed streptococcal endophthalmitis and had to be eviscerated, we had the opportunity to

INTRODUCTION: It is difficult to classify lesions of the iris, especially when they are posterior or in the iridociliary angle of the eye.
METHOD: We used an ultrasound biomicroscope (Humphrey, Zeiss, Oberkochen, Germany) with a high-frequency sound head (30 and 50 Hz). This study included all patients with unspecified iris processes who were examined at the University Eye Clinic and Hospital of Ulm between September 1996 and February 1997. Fifteen patients, aged between 9 to 82 years (average age = 48.9 years), were prospectively evaluated.
RESULTS: A cyst of the iris or ciliary body causin

In fluorescence microscopy, light radiation can be used to bleach fluorescent molecules in formalin-fixed and paraffin-embedded (FFPE) samples, in order to increase the ratio between signal of interest and background autofluorescence. We tested if the same principle can be exploited in bright field microscopy to bleach pigmented melanoma FFPE sections together with cell morphology maintenance. After dewaxing and rehydration, serial FFPE sections of a feline diffuse iris melanoma, a canine dermal melanoma, a gray horse dermal melanoma and a swine cutaneous melanoma were irradiated with visible

The iris involvement in generalized carcinomatosis is less frequent than that of the ciliary body and choroid; its point of interest is that it might constitute the presenting sign of the general disease. The case of a 43-year-old man who had a metastasis of an anaplastic bronchus carcinoma in the iris and died of metastases 3 months after the appearance of the iris tumor, despite adequate chemotherapy, is reported.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the use of ultrasound biomicroscope (UBM) in imaging anterior segment tumors of eye.
METHODS: 13 cases of anterior segment tumors of eye were examined with UBM.
RESULTS: 3 cases had the ocular history of trauma or surgery and were clinically diagnosed as anterior iris cysts. UBM displayed the cysts as thin-walled, no internal reflectivity, and at the locate of anterior humour angle; 8 cases had superficial anterior humour, narrow anterior angle and clinically be suspected as tumors behind iris or ciliary body. UBM showed cystic reflectivity in 7 cases and a solid tumor i

PURPOSE: To report a clinicopathologic correlation of a melanoma arising from iris component of ocular melanocytosis in a child.
METHODS: A 13-year-old boy developed a progressive iris nodule arising from sector iris pigmentation that was a component of congenital ocular melanocytosis involving the iris, ciliary body and choroid. The tumor was examined clinically and with ultrasound biomicroscopy (UBM), removed by peripheral iridocyclectomy, and studied histopathologically.
RESULTS: Clinically, the pigmented nodule was 3 mm in diameter, located within the sector iris pigmentation, and was 2.

Primary cysts of the iris usually arise from the pigment epithelial layers and are almost always benign, stationary lesions which require no treatment. Those cysts which are secondary to such agents as trauma or inflammation are, however, characterized by progressive enlargement and visual complications. The major clinical significance of iris cysts lies in their similarity to iris melanomas. Cysts should be monitored for enlargement and/or other complications such as inflammation or secondary glaucoma.

Intraocular metastases are the most common malignancy of eye. Breast cancer is more frequently a cause of intraocular metastases. As a first metastatic site, iris and ciliary body are relatively rare. We report a case of a 52-year-old woman, operated for breast cancer 16 months ago and diagnosed multiple brain metastases 1 month ago. After first course of chemotherapy she was admitted to hospital with the complaints of eye pain and she recognized a solid mass on iris. Iris and ciliary metastases were diagnosed by ophthalmological examination. Because of the patient's poor general condition, di

Uveal melanoma (UM) is a primary neoplasm of the eye arising from the melanocytes residing in the iris, ciliary body or choroid. It is the most frequent intraocular malignancy and often determines metastases at distant sites, with a peculiar tropism for the liver. Metastatic UM has a poor prognosis, as any treatment affects the natural course of this fatal disease. Herein, we report a case of a UM metastatic to the liver in a 54 year-old female patient, initially treated with nivolumab without success. The patient was then scheduled for selective internal radiation therapy (SIRT) while continu

A woman in her mid-70s developed uncontrolled intraocular pressure (IOP) in her right eye despite trabeculectomy, Ahmed valve implantation and ongoing topical therapy. Left IOP was normal without treatment. Examination revealed fluffy anterior chamber deposits and vitreous debris. Ultrasound biomicroscopy (UBM) showed diffuse thickening of the iris and ciliary body. Iris biopsy and anterior chamber aspiration confirmed melanoma, and enucleation demonstrated extensive iris and ciliary body involvement with extrascleral extension (stage pT4). This case underscores the diagnostic challenge of lig

Neurofibromatosis is an autosomal dominant disease with multiple systemic and ocular signs and features. The ocular manifestations of neurofibromatosis include a high incidence of iris hamartomas (Lisch nodules), choroidal hamartomas, and eye lid neurofibromas. Other ocular features may include conjunctival neurofibromas, prominent corneal nerves, glial tissue overlying the optic nerve, and bilateral optic atrophy due to optic glioma. Once neurofibromatosis is diagnosed, patients must have long-term ophthalmic evaluations throughout their lifetime, as this is a progressive systemic and ocular

PURPOSE: To report a case of iris melanocytoma mimicking the Cogan-Reese syndrome.
METHODS: A 37-year-old woman presented with pigmentary glaucoma in her left eye. There was diffuse pigmentary dispersion in the anterior segment, pedunculated pigmented nodules on the anterior iris surface, mild iris atrophy, and ectropion iridis. Neither intrinsic vasculature nor a sector cataract was found. The angle was open with marked trabecular pigmentation and no anterior synechiae. The intraocular pressure was 30 mmHg with maximum medical treatment and there was glaucomatous optic atrophy. The different

Authors present their observation of 28 pigmented tumors of the iris and iridociliary region during 8 years. While deciding whether to continue in observation or to indicate surgery, they were concentrated on observation of blood supply's abnormalities of pigmented mass and defect of blood-aqueous barrier during the iris angiography. Melanoma--mostly celullar type of high malignity--was confirmed in 11 cases, pigmented meduloepithelioma in 1 case, pigmented naevus in 2 cases out of 14 patients indicated for surgery. Authors correlated angiographical pictures with clinical observation and histo

Between 1983 and 1986, six eyes with diffuse malignant melanomas of the anterior uvea were enucleated at the Eye Hospital of the University of Erlangen-Nürnberg. The characteristic clinical findings were a monolateral open-angle glaucoma in the same eye and a diffuse spreading of malignant melanocytes on the inner walls of the anterior chamber. These cells can be differentiated biomicroscopically (40 x magnification, Zeiss slit-lamp) from melanin granula and benign melanocytes. Findings in two patients show that individual cells can be biocytologically classified in this way. Malignant cells a
