Application of Vacuum-Formed Cyst Plug-in Conservative Treatment of Jaw Cyst in Children.

Fenestration decompression, which can protect important anatomic structures and reduce surgical risk is the most preferred way for the treatment of jaw cysts in children, and wearing a cyst plug after the operation is the key to success. To enhance the retention of the cyst plug and promote the healing of the cyst, our team designed the vacuum-formed cyst plug to replace the classic one. This article presents a case of a jaw cyst in a 6-year-old girl who wore the vacuum-formed cyst plug after the fenestration decompression. Six months later, the cyst healed, and the permanent teeth affected by…

Enucleation of jaw cyst combined with intentional replantation to retain cyst-involved teeth.

BACKGROUND: Jaw cysts often deeply involve adjacent tooth roots, making it difficult to preserve them. The purpose of this retrospective study was to investigate the effectiveness of an intentional replantation (IR) strategy combined with cyst enucleation in preserving cyst-involved teeth during jaw cyst removal. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fifteen patients with jaw cysts and deeply involved teeth were treated with IR and cyst enucleation. All patients received root canal therapy prior to surgery, except for one patient who received it during surgery. The involved teeth were extracted, and the roo…

A pigmented dentigerous cyst in a patient with multiple dentigerous cysts of the jaws: a case report.

AIM: The aim of this article is to report an unusual and interesting case of non-syndromic multiple dentigerous cysts of the maxilla and mandible associated with melanin pigment and melanocytes in the epithelial lining in one of the cysts. In addition, embryologic aspect and origin of melanocytes are briefly discussed. BACKGROUND: Dentigerous cysts are the second most common odontogenic cysts after radicular cysts. They are usually solitary with multiple cysts reported on occasion in association with syndromes. While melanocytes and melanin-pigment are widely distributed in the skin, the nerv

A biochemical study of the nature of jaw cysts (II). The role of lipids in the enlargement of cysts.

It is believed that cysts in jaws enlarge when the permeability of the cyst wall changes, that the proteins of cyst fluid increase, and that the intracystic fluid pressure on the jaw bone increases because of inflammation. On the other hand, it is also believed that cysts enlarge when a prostaglandin-like substance, which is generated in the wall, acts chemically in the resorption of the jaw bone. This investigation comprised 97 cases of various jaw cysts. The author attempted to treat 91 of these cases by the irrigation method. Lipids and related substances in cyst walls removed at operation …

Predictors of Bone Cavity Volume Reduction Rate Following Marsupialization of Jaw Cysts.

BACKGROUND: Marsupialization is a minimally invasive treatment for large jaw cysts, but the rate of bone cavity volume reduction and factors influencing this rate remain poorly defined. PURPOSE: To estimate bone cavity volume reduction and identify factors associated with reduction after marsupialization of jaw cysts. STUDY DESIGN, SETTING, SAMPLE: This retrospective cohort study included patients treated with marsupialization for histopathologically confirmed odontogenic jaw cysts (initial diameter ≥3.5 cm) between January 2020 and December 2024 at Qujing Central Hospital of Yunnan Province…

Jaw cysts diagnosed in an Italian population over a 20-year period.

BACKGROUND: Cysts of the jaws (JCs) are an important topic of oral pathology, but few epidemiological data are present in the literature, in particular about the potential of recurrence. The aim of this study was to describe a case series of JCs from a single institution, evaluating the frequency, the site, the age distribution, and the percentage of recurrence of all types of JCs. METHODS: All JCs present in the histological records of the Section of Anatomic Pathology of the University of Bologna at Bellaria Hospital from 1992 to 2012 were retrieved. RESULTS: A total of 1136 jaws cysts wer

Markers of proliferation and cytokeratins in the differential diagnosis of jaw cysts.

We conducted a retrospective study to analyze the histologic and immunohistochemical findings in three main types of odontogenic cyst. We studied 90 archived cystic jaw lesions: 30 dentigerous cysts, 30 keratocystic odontogenic tumors, and 30 radicular cysts. The cyst types were identified on the basis of clinical, radiologic, and histopathologic findings. Immunohistochemical analyses included staining with Ki-67, p53, epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR), cytokeratin (CK) 8, CK14, CK17, and CK18. Cell immunopositivity was evaluated for the entire epithelium. The criteria for Ki-67 and p53

Radiographic findings and prognosis of simple bone cysts of the jaws.

OBJECTIVE: The aim was to evaluate the possibility of radiographic prediction of the prognosis of simple bone cysts (SBCs) of the jaws. METHODS: The relationship between the radiographic findings and treatment outcome (healing or recurrence) was investigated in 31 cases treated in the authors' hospital and 108 published cases. RESULTS: In 17 of our 31 cases, the lesions had radiographic findings of a preserved lamina dura adjacent to the lesion, with a smooth margin, and no or smooth bone expansion, and all of them healed after surgery. In the other 14 cases, there was resorption of the lami

Solitary bone cyst of the jaws: a review of the etiopathogenic hypotheses.

Solitary bone cysts (SBCs) of the jaws are often polymorphic, show scalloped borders when located between the teeth roots, are devoid of an epithelial lining, and are usually empty or contain blood or a straw-colored fluid. The numerous synonyms referring to these lesions reflect their uncertain nature (eg, traumatic bone cyst, simple bone cyst). SBC, also found in other skeletal locations, is often suspected after epidemiologic and radiologic test results and confirmed at surgery. Histology usually shows fibrous connective tissue or only bone. The various etiologic elements responsible for SB
