The combined use of gamma-aminobutyric acid and walnut peptide enhances sleep in mice.

BACKGROUND: γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) is a naturally occurring non-protein amino acid in the nervous system and has a wide range of physiological functions in the body. Walnut peptide (WP) contains high levels of arginine, aspartic acid, and glutamate, and has been shown to improve cognitive deficits and memory impairment in mice, while restoring antioxidant enzyme levels and reducing brain inflammatory mediators. METHODS: This study investigated the effects of GABA and WP, either alone or in combination, on sleep disturbances in mice. The pentobarbital-prolonged sleep test, pentobarbital-th

Landfill Leachate Treatment Through Coagulation-flocculation with Lime and Bio-sorption by Walnut-shell.

Due to the environmental consequences corresponding to leachate penetration, a sequence of inexpensive conventional processes proposed leachate treatment. The main objective was maximizing the COD and heavy metal removal efficiencies while minimizing generated sludge volume and material consumption rate. Walnut-shell adsorption complements lime treatment by eliminating heavy metals and low molecular-weight organic compounds. Samples gathered from Nazlou-landfill, Urmia, Iran. The relative significance of independent variables (lime and walnut-shell dosages and pH) on the removal efficiency was

Probable walnut-induced anaphylactic reaction in a dog.

BACKGROUND: Anaphylaxis due to nuts is frequent in humans; to the best of the authors' knowledge, it has not been reported previously in dogs. CASE REPORT: A 5-year-old female, intact, Vizsla dog was presented with acute diarrhoea, vomiting, respiratory distress and erythematous wheals. The dog had eaten walnuts, which she had been fed in small amounts for years, hours before the onset of clinical signs. A diagnosis of generalized anaphylaxis was made. Skin testing and Western blotting revealed positive results with walnuts and hazelnuts. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL IMPORTANCE: This case report

The walnut tree as a source of progesterone for reproductive control in goats.

Intravaginal sponges impregnated with the progesterone (P4) analogue fluorogestone acetate (FGA) induce synchronous oestrous behaviour and normal ovulatory cycle in goats. To explore alternatives using natural P4 from plants, we developed a method of ethanolic extraction and a specific enzyme immunoassay (EIA) to measure P4 in the different parts of the walnut tree Juglans regia. We found a very high concentration of P4, specifically in the leaves of the three most common French varieties (∼100 mg/kg of DM) but not in flowers, fruits, septa, husk, oil or cake. High concentrations of P4-and to …

Ultrasound-assisted extraction of bioactive phenolic compounds from walnut green husk: Phytochemical characterization and multi-endpoint Caenorhabditis elegans bioactivity screening for food-relevant applications.

This study optimized phenolic extraction from walnut green husk (Juglans regia L.) and established a screening framework for evaluating bioactivity of agricultural byproduct extracts toward food ingredient development. Indirect ultrasound-assisted extraction with 80% ethanol yielded maximum phenolic content (477 mg/100 g fresh weight), 8.7-fold higher than water extraction. Principal component analysis confirmed solvent polarity as the primary factor in extraction selectivity. HPLC-DAD-MS identified thirteen compounds dominated by naphthoquinones (31%) and tetralones (24%). Caenorhabditis eleg…

Walnut shell-based biochar-assisted Fe sites anchored carbon-rich g-C3N4: Boosting photodegradation of 2-Mercaptobenzothiazole though synergistic enhancement of Fe sites and C substitution.

To expand the utilization of discarded walnut shells and enhance the photocatalytic activity of graphitic carbon nitride(g-C3N4), the carbon-rich graphitic carbon nitride anchored with Fe sites (FeW-CN) was synthesized via a walnut shell-based biochar-assisted strategy. Unlike the direct thermal copolymerization of melamine for g-C3N4, the iron-loaded walnut shell-based biochar (FeW) was first synthesized, followed by thermal copolymerization of melamine with FeW to form FeW-CN. The C substitution on the triazine ring enhanced the light absorption and electron migration for FeW-CN. And the Fe

[CASES OF ANAPHYLAXIS AND IMMEDIATE-TYPE ALLERGIC REACTIONS TO NUTS THAT COULD NOT BE PREVENTED BY MERE AWARENESS OF AVOIDING THE ALLERGENIC FOOD].

Allergies to walnuts and cashew nuts are on the rise, and walnuts have been required to be labeled as a specific ingredient since March 2023, and labeling requirements are exempt for face-to-face sales. It is expected that the mandatory labeling of cashew nuts will be implemented within the fiscal year 2025. Here, we report two cases in which patients developed anaphylaxis despite heeding cautions regarding the mixing of nuts. Case 1: A child with apprehension about a walnut allergy developed symptoms of anaphylaxis after purchasing and consuming a "peanut cream bread" directly from a store. A

Hybridization, Behavioral Patterns, and Pre- and Postzygotic Isolation Between Two Recently Derived Species of Walnut-Infesting Rhagoletis Fruit Flies in the Highlands of Mexico.

Episodes of isolation and secondary contact among populations of insects of Nearctic origin during Pleistocene glacial/postglacial climatic cycles had a strong evolutionary influence on the diversity of flies in the genus Rhagoletis in mountainous areas of Mexico. As a series of experiments undertaken to gather support for phylogenetic hypotheses on the origin of three walnut-infesting species in the suavis group, we examined pre- and postzygotic isolation between Rhagoletis completa Cresson, 1929 and R. ramosae Hernández-Ortiz, 1985. Model of Walnut Allergy in CC027/GeniUnc Mice Recapitulates Key Features of Human Disease.

Tree nut allergies affect 1% of the United States population, are often severe in nature and rarely outgrown. Despite the severity and prevalence, there are no FDA-approved treatments for tree nut allergy. Development of a therapeutic would be expedited by having a mouse model that mimics the human disease. We utilized the CC027/GeniUnc mouse strain, which was previously identified as an orally reactive model of peanut allergy, to develop a model of walnut allergy. Mice were sensitized with walnut and cholera toxin for 4 weeks and subsequently challenged by oral gavage. Blood samples were coll

Is the alpine divide becoming more permeable to biological invasions? - Insights on the invasion and establishment of the Walnut Husk Fly, Rhagoletis completa (Diptera: Tephritidae) in Switzerland.

The Walnut Husk Fly, Rhagoletis completa Cresson (Diptera: Tephritidae), is native to North America (Midwestern US and north-eastern Mexico) and has invaded several European countries in the past decades by likely crossing the alpine divide separating most parts of Switzerland from Italy. Here, we determined its current distribution in Switzerland by sampling walnuts (Juglans regia L.) in ecologically and climatically distinct regions along potential invasion corridors. R. completa was found to be firmly established in most low altitude areas of Switzerland where walnuts thrive, but notably no…

Uranium mobility across annual growth rings in three deciduous tree species.

Black walnut (Juglans nigra), slippery elm (Ulmus rubra), and white ash (Fraxinus americana) trees were evaluated as potential archives of past uranium (U) contamination. Like other metals, U mobility in annual growth rings of trees is dependent on the tree species. Uranium concentrations and isotopic compositions (masses 234, 235, 236, and 238) were analyzed by thermal ionization mass spectrometry to test the efficacy of using tree rings to retroactively monitor U pollution from the FFMPC, a U purification facility operating from 1951 to 1989. This study found non-natural U (depleted U and de…

Combined effects of chlorine dioxide, plasma-processed air, and modified atmosphere packaging on safety and quality of fresh walnuts.

Fresh walnuts are highly perishable after harvest. This work explored hurdle treatment of chlorine dioxide (ClO₂), indirect plasma-processed air (IPPA), and modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) on fresh walnuts with/without husk. Combining IPPA with 10 mg L-1 ClO₂ reduced mold counts by up to 2.06 log CFU g-1 and decreased ClO₂ usage by 80% compared to 50 mg L-1 ClO₂ alone. Subsequent integration with active or passive MAP extended shelf life from 60 to 120 days. A critical storage threshold was identified at day 60, where preservation efficacy among treatments began to diverge significantly. A

Sustainable, biodegradable, and recyclable bioplastics derived from renewable carboxymethyl cellulose and waste walnut shell.

Manufacturing water-stable carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) films as an alternative to commercial plastics is a promising solution to address plastic pollution. In this study, waste walnut shell (WS) was used as a natural lignocellulosic filler, glycerol as a plasticizer, and citric acid (CA) as a crosslinking agent for preparing high-performance CMC-based bioplastics through a one-pot casting method. When WS content was 12 wt%, the obtained CWGA-12 after optimization exhibited excellent mechanical properties (tensile strength ≈18.53 MPa, fracture strain ≈78.11 %), low surface roughness (< 16 nm)

Characterization of plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) in Persian walnut associated with drought stress tolerance.

There is a lack of information on the rhizosphere of nut-bearing trees where microbial populations can benefit roots and tree growth. The current research aimed at discovering plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) in the rhizosphere of soil samples from around the root zone of six walnut trees, each of which was considered as a genotype, i.e. 'TT1', 'TT2', 'SS2', 'ZM1', 'Chandler' and 'Haward'. The trees grew in different arid and semiarid regions of Iran and Turkey. The strains were isolated and identified based on different morphological and biochemical markers. Drought-stress toleranc
