Postlaminectomy instability of the cervical spine can be managed either anteriorly or posteriorly. The posterior procedures that have been described are best performed at the time of the original decompressive procedure. Thus, the development of a kyphotic deformity is prevented. Generally, it is technically easier to achieve anterior stabilization and arthrodesis if a postlaminectomy kyphosis develops.

The authors establish some indications, depending on several criteria, of the treatment of cases of juvenile kyphosis of the Scheuermann type. These are based on their experience acquired in the therapy of 26 cases of juvenile kyphosis in which orthopaedic procedures have been applied -- plaster cast for recovery in two stages, followed by an orthopaedic corset and careful follow-up for at least one year after the end of the treatment. The criteria suggested as being important are: the severity of the kyphosis, the mobility of the spine, the severity of the kyphosis, the mobility of the spine,

PURPOSE: To evaluate the impact of proximal thoracic segment (T1-T5) on global thoracic kyphosis, as well as its influence on cervical alignment (lordotic, kyphotic or straight) in patients with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS).
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective study of 80 patients with AIS. The inclusion criteria were patients between 10 and 18 years of age with a posteroanterior (PA) and lateral full-length radiographs, excluding those subjected to surgery, orthotic treatment, with other spinal disease or with poor X-ray quality. The parameters evaluated were age, sex, pelvic inci

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate short term proximal junctional kyphosis and failure (PJK/PJF) rates and clinical outcomes in patients who underwent posterior spinal fusion (PSF) and deformity correction using sublaminar bands in a hybrid construct.
METHODS: This is a retrospective review of pediatric spinal deformity cases performed by a single surgeon from January 2008 to December 2012. One hundred thirty-six pediatric deformity patient charts were reviewed for inclusion into the study. All 136 patients reviewed had been operatively managed for a spinal deformity and were

BACKGROUND: The patients with healed severe progressive tubercular kyphosis may develop late-onset paraplegia. A particular subgroup of these children (Type IB progression) may benefit from the management principles of congenital kyphosis. Self-correction may be observed by selective continued growth of anterior vertebral epiphyseal end-plates over the posterior fused mass. We report a series of cases with posterior fusion of progressive post-tubercular kyphosis with an aim to prevent further progression of kyphosis and to assess if any gradual self correction is seen in followup.

PURPOSE: Prevalence of proximal junctional kyphosis (PJK) in Scheuermann's kyphosis (SK) varies between 24 and 40%. Multiple factors have been implicated, including kyphosis overcorrection, failure to include proximal end vertebra, and implant choice. This study aimed to determine the goal correction parameters based upon patients' pelvic incidence, and UIV to decrease PJK in Scheuermann's kyphosis.
METHODS: X-ray and chart review of SK patients operated with all pedicle screw (PS), hybrid fixation (HF), and anterior/posterior fusions with hybrid fixation (AP). T1/T2 were grouped together as

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of distal fusion level selection on the distal junctional kyphosis (DJK) in Scheuermann kyphosis (SK) patients who underwent posterior fusion.
METHODS: Thirty-nine SK patients who underwent posterior fusion with a minimum follow-up of 3 years were retrospectively evaluated. According to the distal fusion level, patients were divided into 3 groups. Group S; lowest instrumented vertebra (LIV) was the sagittal stable vertebra (SSV), Group F; LIV was the first lordotic vertebra (FLV) and, Group L; LIV was the lower end vertebra (LEV).

PURPOSE: Sagittal balance has recently been the focus of studies aimed at understanding the correction force required for both coronal and sagittal malalignment. However, the correlation between cervical kyphosis and sagittal balance in AIS patients has yet to be thoroughly investigated. This study aimed to clarify the correlation between cervical alignment and spinal balance in patients with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS). Here, we hypothesized that cervical kyphosis patients can be classified into groups by the apex of thoracic kyphosis.
METHODS: This study included 92 AIS patients (

Thoracic kyphosis tends to increase with age. Hyperkyphosis is defined as excessive curvature of the thoracic spine and may be associated with adverse health effects. Hyperkyphosis in isolation or as a component of degenerative kyphoscoliosis has important implications for the surgical management of adult spinal deformity. Our objective was to review the literature on the epidemiology, etiology, natural history, management, and outcomes of thoracic hyperkyphosis. We performed a narrative review of literature on thoracic hyperkyphosis and its implications for adult spinal deformity surgery. Hyp

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the results of the surgical treatment of the spinal Kyphosis using the Ponte's technique (multiple posterior osteotomies).
METHODS: Ten patients (8 with Scheuermann's kyphosis and 2 with kyphosis after laminectomy) submitted to surgical correction of kyphotic deformity greater than 70° were retrospectively assessed. The age at the surgical time ranged from 12 to 20 years old (mean age16.8 years ± 2.89). The radiographic parameters evaluated were the kyphosis, the lordosis and the scoliosis - whenever present. The presence of proximal and distal junctional kyphosis, loss

We describe a 49-year-old man with advanced kyphosis and dense cataract, who could only recline to about 40° from the vertical axis despite a maximal reverse Trendelenburg position and pillows under the head, neck, shoulders and knees. With a single corneal retraction suture at 6 o'clock, the eye could be rotated horizontally, which enabled the surgeon to perform a complex cataract surgery despite prior glaucoma shunt, posterior synechiae, a small pupil and the need to stain the capsule. As the eye can be brought into any desired position with a retraction suture, patients with kyphosis or oth

Structural kyphosis is a posterior convex deformity of the spine that may appear in childhood then worsen with growth, most notably during the pubertal growth spurt. The abnormal curvature may be smooth, defining round kyphosis, or may display a sharp angular pattern. Angular kyphosis is the more severe of the two forms. The main causes of round kyphosis are postural kyphosis and Scheuermann's disease. The spontaneous outcome is favourable, and round kyphosis is well tolerated in adulthood. The treatment relies on orthopaedic methods in the overwhelming majority of cases. Surgery is reserved f

Kyphosis is a sagittal deviation of the spine that presents as an anterior spinal curvature. It is a frequent reason for consultation during adolescence. It is necessary to know how to differentiate between a simple postural kyphosis that is flexible and reducible, and requires no further investigation, from a true kyphosis that requires at minimum a radiological evaluation with films of the entire spine, in AP and lateral views. If vertebral epiphysitis is most often at the origins of the sagittal vertebral deviations encountered in daily practice, the other causes pose diagnostic and therape
