Clinical and laboratory profile of dengue infection in children.

The present work is a prospective, observational, hospital based study on 100 sero positive cases of dengue infection, admitted to Dhaka Children Hospital, Dhaka, Bangladesh during the period 2000 -2001. The patients were in the age group 8 months to 14 years with a mean age of 8.3 years. The serological tests were performed by rapid strip test. Primary dengue infection (only Ig M positive) was observed in 15% cases while rest 85% were secondary dengue infection (either Ig G or both Ig M and Ig G positive). Classical dengue fever (DF) was noted in 11% patients and 89% children presented with d

Laboratory diagnosis of community-acquired lower respiratory tract infection.

This article has focused on the evaluation of outpatients with lower respiratory illness. In large part, the need for microbiological work-up is host-dependent. Healthy patients usually do well, and laboratory data are often unnecessary. The abnormal host requires a different approach and, in general, the more compromised the host, the more aggressive the laboratory evaluation. A renal transplant patient with respiratory symptoms often follows the dictum that "common things happen commonly;" however, the clinician needs that extra level of assurance in this case. Some transplant patients may h

Accidental Leishmania mexicana infection in an immunosuppressed laboratory technician.

A 30 year-old female laboratory technician under immunosuppressive treatment because of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) developed cutaneous leishmaniasis 8 months after accidental percutaneous inoculation of amastigote culture forms of Leishmania mexicana. Leishmania-specific PCR and restriction analysis patterns were identical for both the laboratory strain and the clinical specimen. The lesion was resistant to local paromomycin and oral ketoconazole, but responded to local application of meglumine antimonate. No signs of dissemination or visceralization occurred during the 5-month period

Hantavirus infection in laboratory and wild rodents in Argentina.

Serum samples from urban and laboratory rats, laboratory mice and wild and laboratory cricetids in Argentina were tested by immunofluorescence and plaque reduction neutralization tests to investigate prevalence of anti-Hantavirus antibodies. A total of 102 sera were obtained from laboratory rodents in 4 different animal-rooms, 31 from harbor rats and 30 from wild cricetids in 1985-1987. Anti-Hantavirus antibodies were detected in 22.5% of Rattus norvegicus in 3 of the animal-rooms but harbor rats were found to be free of Hantavirus infection. Previously, the presence of anti-Hantavirus antibod

[The natural history and laboratory parameters of HIV infection].

Since 1983 the morbidity and mortality rates as well as results of haematological, immunological and (later) HIV serological tests were recorded prospectively for 497 HIV-positive patients during 1837 clinic visits at least twice within at most six months for a median period of observation of 18 months (range 6-64 months). The rate of progression to a higher stage was calculated according to the method of Kaplan-Meier. The rate for asymptomatic patients was 16% after one and 33% after two years; for patients with persisting generalized lymphadenopathy it was 13% and 21%, respectively, for thos

Serological studies on a case of laboratory dengue infection.

One of the authors (Y.O.), who had previously been immunized with Japanese encephalitis (JE) vaccine, showed symptoms of typical dengue feve … 4 virus and homologous infecting virus was separated. These findings clearly demonstrated that the laboratory infection of Y.O. was primary dengue infection with dengue type 4 virus.

Salmonella and Erysipelothrix infection in swine: a laboratory summary.

The occurrence of salmonellas and Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae in tissues of swine was determined by bacteriologic and fluorscent antibody examination of 5,297 specimens from herds investigated for hog cholera. Of the specimens examined, 35.5% were positive for salmonellas, 21.1% were positive for E rhusiopathiae, and 8.3% were positive for both salmonellas and E rhusiopathiae.

Infecting Pacific Herring with Ichthyophonus sp. in the Laboratory.

The protistan parasite Ichthyophonus sp. occurs in coastal populations of Pacific Herring Clupea pallasii throughout the northeast Pacific region, but the route(s) by which these planktivorous fish become infected is unknown. Several methods for establishing Ichthyophonus infections in laboratory challenges were examined. Infections were most effectively established after intraperitoneal (IP) injections with suspended parasite isolates from culture or after repeated feedings with infected fish tissues. Among groups that were offered the infected tissues, infection prevalence was greater after

Support of the laboratory in the diagnosis of fungal ocular infections.

This is a retrospective, and descriptive study about the support that the laboratory of microbiology aids can provide in the diagnosis of ocular infections in patients whom were attended a tertiary-care hospital in México City in a 10-year-time period. We describe the microbiological diagnosis in palpebral mycose; in keratitis caused by Fusarium, Aspergillus, Candida, and melanized fungi; endophthalmitis; one Histoplasma scleritis and one mucormycosis. Nowadays, ocular fungal infections are more often diagnosed, because there is more clinical suspicion and there are easy laboratory confirmatio

Fungal infections of the eye--laboratory diagnosis and treatment.

Infections of the eye give rise to severe ocular morbidity and blindness include keratitis, orbital cellulites, endophthalmitis and dacryocystitis. Corneal blindness, in developing countries is predominantly associated with infections. In India, nearly 30-35% of all culture positive infectious keratitis are caused fungi. Laboratory diagnosis mainly depends upon proper collection and transport of clinical specimens. In fungal keratitis, corneal scraping is the ideal sample, but occasionally corneal biopsy or anterior chamber aspirate may also be needed. Corneal scraping is usually by Kimura spa
