Introduction: A rare case of atraumatic liver laceration associated with hemoperitoneum is presented in a patient with amyloidosis who came to the hospital for abdominal pain. Case Presentation: The imaging findings reveal significant hepatomegaly with finely heterogeneous hepatic density and subcapsular hypo-dense streaks in segments VI and VII, likely representing lesions. Post-contrast enhancement shows a punctiform contrast medium extravasation within the subhepatic fluid collection, visible from the arterial phase and intensifying in subsequent study phases. Discussion: These imaging find

Despite its relatively protected position, the liver is the most frequently injured solid intra-abdominal organ. 1 Most liver injuries can be managed conservatively, but about 5% to 10% require urgent laparotomy, usually when the mechanism of injury involves a vehicle accident and hemodynamic instability persists, in spite of 40 mL/kg of blood transfusion. 2 , 3 In particular, grades IV and V liver injuries may pose a challenge to the surgeon trying to control hemorrhage, the leading cause of mortality. 4 Traumatic injuries to the portal vein are rare but devastating. The mortality rate for po

The good management and orientation of a hand laceration by the general physician is essential. Anatomical knowledge help to judge, after examination, the opportunity for surgery exploration with local anesthesia. Serious stakes are prognostic and economics. The conclusion identifies three clinical pictures : simple superf cial wound requiring a simple clinical control 2 days follow-up, the dubious wound that need to be sent to a specialized center, and the wound requiring care in an emergency hand unit. Extremely urgent wounds are devascularization, amputation and the pressure injection . Bit

Our purpose in this report, involving an unusual mechanism described for the first time in the literature, is to show that high-pressure water sprays used for washing cars can cause injury to the extensor hallucis longus (EHL). A 21-year-old man presented to our emergency department (ED) due to looseness in the hallux. His history revealed that while operating a pressurized water spray machine for car-washing one week before, he had inadvertently sprayed his foot, and despite wearing protective plastic boots this had resulted in a laceration at the level of the hallux, which had been sutured i

Colonoscopic examination is a safe procedure, however, unexpected complications can sometimes occur. Bleeding and perforation of the colon have been reported as the most common complications. Hemoperitoneum after colonoscopy is an unusual complication, but it may be catastrophic. We report on a 20-year-old man who experienced left low quadrant pain after undergoing colonoscopy. Hemoperitoneum was diagnosed using abdominal CT. A laparoscopic exploration was urgently performed, revealing a lacerated mesocolon of the descending colon. Bleeding of the injured site was controlled without complicati

Patient age, the site and extent of the injury, and the delay of treatment significantly influence the outcome after repair of ulnar nerve injuries. Ulnar nerve repairs in older patients, high-level injury, and delayed cases may result in a poor prognosis. High-level lesions and lesions that are close to the elbow can also benefit from nerve transposition. Splinting in wrist flexion and/or elbow extension with carpal tunnel and Guyon's canal releases are necessary for lesions that are closer to the wrist. Arterial repairs combined with nerve repairs especially in low-level injury can provide s

A neonate with lower eyelid and corresponding canalicular laceration of the left eye was examined 2 hours after birth. The eyelid and canalicular laceration were repaired with a short, 24-gauge catheter as the stent. The laceration healed with minimal scarring, and the epiphora had disappeared by the 12-month follow-up visit.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the infant laceration injury rate during Cesarean sections at Naval Medical Center, San Diego and to describe risk factors associated with this complication.
METHODS: Retrospective chart review of all infants born between 1 January 1996 and 31 December, 1999 identified by computer coding as having sustained a birth injury. Fifty randomly selected maternal records of Cesarean sections without infant lacerations were reviewed and analyzed as a control group.
RESULTS: Our Cesarean section rate during the time was 16.5% with a laceration injury rate of 0.74%. When compare…
