This retrospective case report describes 11 pregnancies in five women. All of the women were carriers of the lamin A/C gene mutation known to cause dilated cardiomyopathy, often together with atrioventricular conduction disturbances. BACKGROUND: Recent interest in the function of the nuclear lamina has been provoked by the discovery of lamin A/C mutations in the laminopathy diseases. However, it is not understood why mutations in lamin A give such a range of tissue-specific phenotypes. Part of the problem in rationalising genotype-phenotype correlations in the laminopathies is our lack of understanding of the function of normal and mutant lamin A. Laminated intestinal calculi were detected during radiographic evaluation of the abdomen in 14 adult patients. These enteroliths had developed in the distal ileum of 12 patients who had either a Meckel's diverticulum (four cases) or a variety of other lesions causing local stasis, including strictures due to Crohn's ileitis, ileocecal tuberculosis, radiation enteritis, and peritoneal adhesions. Fifty-six cases of spondylolysis were encountered in 1500 lumbar spine reports reviewed. The frequency of detecting isthmus defects on anteroposterior (AP), lateral, 45-degree right and left oblique, 30-degree up-angled AP, and collimated lateral views was determined. The collimated lateral view showed the largest number of pars defects, 84% of cases. The 30-degree up-angled AP view was more sensitive than the AP view, showing 55% versus 32% of cases. A previously unreported sign of spondylolysis, fragmentation of lamina demonstrated on the AP or AP up-angled view, was found in 14.2% of cases
