Changes in motorcycle-related head injury deaths, hospitalizations, and hospital charges following repeal of Pennsylvania's mandatory motorcycle helmet law.

To evaluate the 2003 repeal of Pennsylvania's motorcycle helmet law, we assessed changes in helmet use and compared motorcycle-related head injuries with non-head injuries from 2001-2002 to 2004-2005. Helmet use among riders in crashes decreased from 82% to 58%. Head injury deaths increased 66%; nonhead injury deaths increased 25%. Motorcycle-related head injury hospitalizations increased 78% compared with 28% for nonhead injury hospitalizations. Helmet law repeals jeopardize motorcycle riders. Until repeals are reversed, states need voluntary strategies to increase helmet use.

Trends in Practice Patterns and Perspectives of Colorado Certified Nurse-Midwives.

Healthcare resources are stretched perilously thin and the demand for primary healthcare services has never been greater. Despite this demand for service, relatively little is known about the practice environment of primary healthcare providers, particularly certified nurse-midwives (CNMs), where workforce surveys frequently include these specialists within the broader nurse practitioner category. A distinct professional discipline, nurse-midwives are one type of primary care provider recommended to enhance access to services. The objective of this study was to understand the nature of the nur

All-terrain vehicle injuries in central Wisconsin: a continuing problem.

All-terrain vehicles (ATVs) have become well recognized as associated with injuries. This recognition has resulted in attempts at education and regulation to reduce the number and severity of injuries and number of deaths. The Marshfield Clinic and St. Joseph's Hospital surveyed all-terrain vehicle accidents in the Emergency Department in 1985 and again in 1988 and followed these patients for at least 1 year after the injury. Between the two dates, extensive educational and legislative activity had taken place. The actual number of all-terrain vehicle accidents had increased. The characteristi

Penetrating eye injuries associated with motor vehicle accidents.

A 2 1/2-year review of penetrating eye injuries resulting from motor vehicle accidents and treated at the Princess Alexandra Hospital, Brisbane, is presented. The series dates from January 1, 1972, when legislation requiring the compulsory wearing of seat belts was introduced. The review shows a downward trend in injuries compared with the previous 6 1/2 years. Almost all the patients failed to wear a lap-and-sash seat belt or, if one was worn, it was not secured properly.

Physical violence in the workplace among Jordanian hospital nurses.

PURPOSE: Lack of policies and assertive legislation on workplace violence has placed Jordanian nurses at frequent risk for workplace violence. The purposes of this research were to (a) investigate the level of physical violence and the complaints and responses of Jordanian hospital nurses to such violence and (b) describe workplace policies that deal with violence and recommend policy directions. DESIGN: A descriptive exploratory survey was used to investigate physical workplace violence among a convenience sample of 420 Jordanian nurses. Data were collected by a self-administered questionnai

Impact of marijuana legalization on cannabis-related visits to the emergency department.

BACKGROUND: Cannabis is widely used in the United States despite federal laws. In US states that have progressed toward legalization, there have been various reported impacts on cannabis-related emergency department (ED) visits. However, studies on the impact of legalization in Massachusetts (MA) EDs are lacking. METHODS: Cannabinoid immunoassay (THC IA) results and cannabis-related ICD-10 codes were obtained for consecutive patient ED visits at two academic medical centers in Boston, MA over the following legalization periods (January 2012-December 2019): decriminalized (DEC), before medical

Increase in Cannabis-Specific Hospital Admissions After Partial Legalization in Germany: A Nationwide Time-Series Analysis.

SUMMARY: In April 2024, the possession and cultivation of non-medical cannabis for adults were legalized in Germany, and the regulation of cannabis for medical purposes was liberalized. We studied whether the rate of hospital admissions with cannabis-specific diagnoses has risen since then. METHODS: The number of inpatient admissions each week from January 2022 to September 2025 was ascertained from DRG and PEPP statistics. The primary endpoint was the rate of admissions with a cannabis-specific ICD-10 main diagnosis (F12.0-F12.9; T40.7) as a proportion of all admissions, determined separatel

[Save or destroy? The importance of medical record for former patients and future patients].

In 1995, a new privacy law was introduced in the Netherlands. According to this law, medical records should be saved for 10 years, and then destroyed, unless keeping the records for a longer period follows reasonably from the duties of the treating physician (as is the case, for example, when treating patients with a chronic disease). There are serious concerns with regard to the future availability of medical record data for clinical research and patient care after 2005. Evaluation of the late effects of many medical treatments will no longer be possible in the Netherlands. Patient care, part

[Organizing the prevention of trachoma in Hungary (1884-1903)].

In Hungary preventative measures against trachoma began in the winter of 1883-1884. Initially based on the recently issued public health law, it was imbedded in a general prevention programme against various epidemics. Local authorities and municipal boards were made responsible for carrying it out. These authorities and boards were obliged to organize supervision, to establish medical offices and ophthalmological wards and to take charge of the continuity of treatments. The public health department, however, faced serious difficulties, since most of the communities did not have the financial

The impact of recreational cannabis legalization on pediatric emergency department visits in British Columbia, Canada.

INTRODUCTION: Canadian youth report some of the highest rates of cannabis use globally, raising concerns about child and youth poisonings from unintentional exposures and recreational use following legalization. This study examines and compares trends in cannabis poisonings among children and youth aged 16 years or younger treated in the emergency department (ED) of a Canadian pediatric hospital before and after the legalization of non-medical cannabis. METHODS: Cannabis-related ED visits at BC Children's Hospital (BCCH) (2016-2021) were identified from the Canadian Hospitals Injury Reporting

Medical and Social Aspects of Syphilis in the Balkans from the mid-19th Century to the Interwar.

The current study presents some aspects of syphilis in the Balkan Peninsula from the 19th century until the Interwar. Ever since the birth of modern Balkan States (Greece, Bulgaria, Turkey and Serbia), urbanization, poverty and the frequent wars have been considered the major factors conducive to the spread of syphilis. The measures against sex work and sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) were taken in two aspects, one medical and the other legislative. In this period, numerous hospitals for venereal diseases were established in the Balkan countries. In line with the international diagnostic

Shackling and pregnancy care policies in US prisons and jails.

OBJECTIVES: The number of incarcerated women in the United States has risen exponentially. Many are of childbearing age with 3-4% being pregnant at intake. Despite the need for comprehensive pregnancy-related health care in prisons and jails, there is no oversight that requires adherence to the established standards. The objective of this study was to assess prison and jail pregnancy policies and practices with an emphasis on restraint use and compliance with anti-shackling legislation. METHODS: We conducted a survey of 22 state prisons and six jails, including the five largest jails, from 20

India's Mental Healthcare Act, 2017: Content, context, controversy.

India's new mental health legislation, the Mental Healthcare Act, 2017, was commenced on 29 May 2018 and seeks explicitly to comply with the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. It grants a legally binding right to mental healthcare to over 1.3 billion people, one sixth of the planet's population. Key measures include (a) new definitions of 'mental illness' and 'mental health establishment'; (b) revised consideration of 'capacity' in relation to mental healthcare (c) 'advance directives' to permit persons with mental illness to direct future care; (d) 'nominate

Bicycling injury hospitalisation rates in Canadian jurisdictions: analyses examining associations with helmet legislation and mode share.

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to calculate exposure-based bicycling hospitalisation rates in Canadian jurisdictions with different helmet legislation and bicycling mode shares, and to examine whether the rates were related to these differences. METHODS: Administrative data on hospital stays for bicycling injuries to 10 body region groups and national survey data on bicycling trips were used to calculate hospitalisation rates. Rates were calculated for 44 sex, age and jurisdiction strata for all injury causes and 22 age and jurisdiction strata for traffic-related injury causes. Inf

Midazolam sedation in palliative medicine: retrospective study in a French center for cancer control.

BACKGROUND: French legislation about sedation in palliative medicine evolved in 2016 with the introduction of a right to deep and continuous sedation, maintained until death. The objective was to describe midazolam sedation at the COL (Centre Oscar Lambret [Oscar Lambret Center], French regional center for cancer control), in order to establish a current overview before the final legislative changes. METHODS: Descriptive, retrospective and single-center study, concerning major patients in palliative care hospitalized from 01/01/2014 to 12/31/2015, who had been sedated by midazolam. The proven

Pharmacist-initiated naloxone discharge prescribing for high-risk hospitalized internal medicine patients.

Pharmacists nationwide may play a critical role in expanding naloxone access after several states enacted legislation to allow pharmacist prescribing of opioid antagonists. This created a unique opportunity for inpatient pharmacists to participate in combating the opioid epidemic by prescribing naloxone at hospital discharge. A multifaceted intervention was developed to identify and educate hospitalized patients eligible for naloxone prescribing. After implementation, 22 of 40 eligible patients (55 percent) were prescribed naloxone by inpatient pharmacists during the 3-month study period. With

'Secrets' that kill: crisis, custodianship and responsibility in ritual male circumcision in the Eastern Cape Province, South Africa.

This paper analyses a tension between traditional leaders and the post-apartheid government in South Africa, concerning the crisis in ritual male circumcision. Over the last two decades, following ritual male circumcision, thousands of youth have been admitted to hospitals, hundreds have undergone penile amputations and hundreds have died. Following the government's intervention through legislation and other health measures, traditional leaders allege that this is a violation of cultural rights enshrined in the Constitution. Drawing on newspaper and journal articles, books, policy documents, a
