A Rapid Review of States' Portable Medical Order Forms and the National POLST Paradigm for Advanced Care Planning.

Hospice and palliative care nurses initiate goals of care conversations with patients and family members while advocating for the completion of advance directives. As leaders in these conversations, nurses must have a working knowledge of the various forms, such as portable medical orders. The National Physician Orders for Life-Sustaining Treatment (POLST) Paradigm calls for the standardization of portable medical orders to ensure goal-concordant care that can cross all healthcare settings. This rapid review provides an overview of state-level portable medical order forms, compares and contras

The experiences of nursing students with dyslexia.

AIM: To explore the experiences of pre-registration nursing students with dyslexia at one university. METHOD: Qualitative methodology was used and semi-structured interviews were carried out with a convenience sample of seven students with formally diagnosed dyslexia. Data were analysed using a thematic network approach. FINDINGS: Fear of ridicule and discrimination exist for nursing students with dyslexia, and delays in identification, referral and testing may adversely affect learning. A sense of duty to disclose dyslexia is linked to students' determination to safeguard those in their car

Championing Quality and Safety Through Perioperative Nurse Advocacy.

Perioperative nurses use evidence-based practice to achieve optimal outcomes when caring for patients. Translating evidence-based guidelines into practice, however, can be difficult, especially when barriers to compliance are present. Compliance barriers may arise from organizational culture, knowledge deficits, absence of policy, shortcuts, competing priorities, time constraints, physician pushback, or system-level barriers. When evidence-based practices are not followed, patient safety events and suboptimal outcomes may occur. This article addresses how legislative advocacy and policy provid

Trends over time in prescribing by English primary care nurses: a secondary analysis of a national prescription database.

BACKGROUND: A growing number of countries legislate for nurses to have medication prescribing authority although it is a contested issue. The UK is one of these countries, giving authority to nurses with additional qualifications since 1992 and incrementally widened the scope of nurse prescribing, most recently in 2006. The policy intention for primary care was to improve efficiency in service delivery through flexibility between medical and nursing roles. The extent to which this has occurred is uncertain. This study investigated nurses prescribing activities, over time, in English primary ca

Strike action by nurses in South Africa: a value clarification.

The Labour Relations Act (South Africa, 1991) made provision for protected strike action by employees, subject to certain conditions, procedures and negotiated agreements. This led to the removal of the strike clause in the Nursing Act (South Africa, 1992). The labour rights of all citizens are entrenched in the Constitution of the country (South Africa, 1996). Participation in strike action by the nurse/midwife, regardless of the legal requirements and specifications, does, however, pose an ethical question. It is therefore necessary to conduct a value clarification on strike action by nurses

National health insurance and the new health occupations: nurse practitioners and physicians' assistants.

This article considers a number of issues which might arise in formulating policy for new health occupations. Its particular focus is on nurse practitioners and physicians' assistants and their treatment under potential national health insurance arrangements. The development and expansion of these occupations are described, as is the evidence on their performance with respect to the quality of medical care provided, the impact on the cost of such care, and changes in access to care. We then discuss several issues which might arise in the context of national health insurance legislation, includ

Needle stick injuries: nurses at risk.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), American health care workers suffer between 600,000 and 1 million needle sticks and other sharps injuries every year. Needle stick injuries are considered to be widely underreported. Eighty percent of blood contacts occur through needle sticks, making this the most common cause of health care work-related exposure to bloodborne pathogens. More than 20 pathogens can be transmitted through small amounts of blood. These include HIV, hepatitis B and C, other forms of hepatitis, syphilis, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, varicellazoste

Addressing gaps in intimate partner violence training in nursing: a case-based pedagogical intervention.

BACKGROUND: Intimate partner violence (IPV) refers to violence (physical, sexual, economic or psychological) inflicted by a spouse or male partner and constitutes a global public health crisis. Health services are a critical entry point for identifying IPV cases. Nurses and healthcare providers must recognize IPV signs, as their role is pivotal in early detection and intervention. However, healthcare professionals and nursing students report a lack of knowledge and training to address it effectively; and adequate training on IPV is still not guaranteed on nursing programs, as often lack adequa

Exploring the Use of Medical Marijuana for Supportive Care of Oncology Patients.

Medical marijuana, also known as cannabis, is being sought by patients and survivors to alleviate common symptoms of cancer and its treatments that affect their quality of life. The National Academy of Sciences (2017) reports conclusive or substantial evidence that cannabis is successful in treating chronic cancer pain and chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting, moderate evidence that cannabinoids are beneficial for sleep disorders that accompany chronic illnesses, and limited evidence supporting use for appetite stimulation and anxiety. However, due to the fact that cannabis is classified a

Cannabis Use as a Risk Factor for Depression, Anxiety, and Suicidality: Epidemiological Associations and Implications for Nurses.

Psychiatric disorders and substance use disorders commonly co-occur and are major public health concerns given the morbidity and mortality associated with them. Globally, cannabis is among the most commonly used drugs, and cannabis use frequently begins in adolescence or emerging adulthood, both important periods of development and periods in which psychiatric symptoms and disorders frequently emerge. Thus, the relationships between cannabis use and mental illnesses are essential for nurses and other healthcare professionals and researchers to explore and understand. This literature review exa

Strategies to Improve Compliance With Smoke Safety.

Surgical smoke generated by energy-based devices is a recognized occupational hazard in ORs, containing toxic gases, particulate matter, and potentially viable cells. Exposure can lead to negative consequences. Research shows perioperative nurses are reporting twice the incidence of respiratory problems as compared to the general population. Despite increasing evidence of harm, evacuation of surgical smoke remains inconsistent across health care settings. Barriers to compliance include the lack of formal education on smoke hazards and evacuation equipment. Effective strategies to improve compl
