Cobalt: An Essential Micronutrient for Plant Growth?

Cobalt is a transition metal located in the fourth row of the periodic table and is a neighbor of iron and nickel. It has been considered an essential element for prokaryotes, human beings, and other mammals, but its essentiality for plants remains obscure. In this article, we proposed that cobalt (Co) is a potentially essential micronutrient of plants. Co is essential for the growth of many lower plants, such as marine algal species including diatoms, chrysophytes, and dinoflagellates, as well as for higher plants in the family Fabaceae or Leguminosae. The essentiality to leguminous plants is

Dynamic role of iron supply in amelioration of cadmium stress by modulating antioxidative pathways and peroxidase enzymes in mungbean.

Iron deficiency and cadmium (Cd) stress causes a rapid change in plant physiology. The aim of this work was to characterize the effects of Fe supplementation on redox reactions in leguminous plants under Cd toxicity. The experiments were performed in hydroponic nutrient media, using mungbean grown under 300 µM cadmium chloride with or without Fe for 10 days. The Fe concentration in plants grown under Fe deficiency was reduced by the presence of Cd; however, it recovered to control levels after Fe was supplied. Similarly, a very high Cd concentration was observed in plants grown under Fe defici

Genistein and Myd88 Activate Autophagy in High Glucose-Induced Renal Podocytes In Vitro.

BACKGROUND Renal podocyte damage plays a crucial role in the development of diabetic nephropathy. Genistein is derived from a leguminous plant, and MyD88 and TRIF are adaptor molecules in the Toll-like receptor (TLR) signaling pathway, which may play a role in autophagy. In this study, we utilized an in vitro high glucose (HG)-treated podocyte model to investigate the effects and underlying mechanisms of Genistein and MyD88 or TRIF siRNA induced autophagy and renal protection. MATERIAL AND METHODS An immortalized mouse podocyte cell line was treated with HG, Genistein, chloroquine, and/or tran

An acpXL mutant of Rhizobium leguminosarum bv. phaseoli lacks 27-hydroxyoctacosanoic acid in its lipid A and is developmentally delayed during symbiotic infection of the determinate nodulating host plant Phaseolus vulgaris.

Rhizobium leguminosarum is a Gram-negative bacterium that forms nitrogen-fixing symbioses with compatible leguminous plants via intracellular invasion and establishes a persistent infection within host membrane-derived subcellular compartments. Notably, an unusual very-long-chain fatty acid (VLCFA) is found in the lipid A of R. leguminosarum as well as in the lipid A of the medically relevant pathogens Brucella abortus, Brucella melitensis, Bartonella henselae, and Legionella pneumophila, which are also able to persist within intracellular host-derived membranes. These bacterial symbionts and

Allelopathy in the natural and agricultural ecosystems and isolation of potent allelochemicals from Velvet bean (Mucuna pruriens) and Hairy vetch (Vicia villosa).

We have studied on allelopathy of plants and developed methods to identify the effective substances in root exudates, leaf leacheate, and volatile chemicals emitted from plants. We found traditional cover plants that show allelopathic activity are useful for weed control. It could eliminate the use of synthetic chemicals for this purpose. Allelopathy is a natural power of plants to protect themselves by producing natural organic chemicals. Some endemic plants in Asia, already known by farmers in the region, as either cover crops used in intercropping, hedgerow, or agroforestry, were found to p

Characterization of the AP2/ERF Transcription Factor Family and Expression Profiling of DREB Subfamily under Cold and Osmotic Stresses in Ammopiptanthus nanus.

APETALA2/ethylene-responsive factor (AP2/ERF) is one of the largest transcription factor (TF) families in plants, which play important roles in regulating plant growth, development, and response to environmental stresses. Ammopiptanthus nanus, an unusual evergreen broad-leaved shrub in the arid region in the northern temperate zone, demonstrates a strong tolerance to low temperature and drought stresses, and AP2/ERF transcription factors may contribute to the stress tolerance of A. nanus. In the current study, 174 AP2/ERF family members were identified from the A. nanus genome, and they were d

Seasonal Reproductive Performance and Pre-diapausing Mating Status of Female Riptortus pedestris (Hemiptera: Alydidae) Collected in Fields.

Two unexplained phenomena are found in Riptortus pedestris (Fabricius) (Hemiptera: Alydidae): the first is that it tends to enter reproductive diapause much earlier in the season and to occur on host plants until late fall before finding hibernation site. The second is that they emerge in early spring when primary food sources such as leguminous plants are unavailable. To understand these phenological trends, the reproductive seasonality of both field-collected and laboratory-reared R. pedestris were compared under conditions of with/without food or access to mates. Females collected in spring

Induced systemic resistance against Botrytis cinerea by Micromonospora strains isolated from root nodules.

Micromonospora is a Gram positive bacterium that can be isolated from nitrogen fixing nodules from healthy leguminous plants, where they could be beneficial to the plant. Their plant growth promoting activity in legume and non-legume plants has been previously demonstrated. The present study explores the ability of Micromonospora strains to control fungal pathogens and to stimulate plant immunity. Micromonospora strains isolated from surface sterilized nodules of alfalfa showed in vitro antifungal activity against several pathogenic fungi. Moreover, root inoculation of tomato plants with these

Characterization and systematic implications of the diversity in timing of programmed cell death of the suspensors in Leguminosae.

PREMISE OF THE STUDY: In angiosperm seeds, the developing embryo acquires nutrients via a suspensor that typically undergoes programmed cell death (PCD) at the early cotyledon stage. However, in Leguminosae (the third largest angiosperm family), the suspensors can disappear at the heart-shaped stage (i.e., prior to the cotyledon stage) or still persist at the cotyledon stage. Here, in a comprehensive survey of legume suspensors and embryos, the variation and the evolutionary direction of timing of suspensor PCD in Leguminosae were characterized, and systematic implications were evaluated. Impact of thermal processing on legume allergens.

Food induced allergic manifestations are reported from several parts of the world. Food proteins exert their allergenic potential by absorption through the gastrointestinal tract and can even induce life threatening anaphylaxis reactions. Among all food allergens, legume allergens play an important role in induction of allergy because legumes are a major source of protein for vegetarians. Most of the legumes are cooked either by boiling, roasting or frying before consumption, which can be considered a form of thermal treatment. Thermal processing may also include autoclaving, microwave heating

Effect of protein additives on acetylene reduction (nitrogen fixation) by Rhizobium in the presence and absence of soybean cells.

The effect of protein additives on acetylene reduction (N(2) fixation) by Rhizobium associated with soybean cells (Glycine max [L.] Merr.) in vitro was studied. Acetylene reduction was promoted on the basal medium supplemented with 1.4 mg of N/ml supplied as aqueous extracts of hexane-extracted soybean, red kidney beans (Phaseolus vulgaris L.), or peas (Pisum sativum L.). Commercial samples of alpha-casein, or bovine serum albumin also promoted acetylene reduction at a concentration of 1.4 mg of N/ml of basal medium, but egg albumin supplying an equal amount of nitrogen to the basal medium com

Effect of galactose side-chain modification on immunomodulatory activity of tamarind xyloglucan oligosaccharides.

Xyloglucan, an abundant polysaccharide bearing galactose side-chains within the cell wall of cotyledons from leguminous seeds, exhibits superior immunomodulatory properties. However, the contribution of its galactose side-chains remains unclear. This study aimed to elucidate the role of the galactose side-chains in the immunomodulatory activity by comparing the effects of oligosaccharides with different degrees of galactosyl substitution on RAW 264.7 mouse macrophages. Three structurally distinct xyloglucan fractions were prepared from tamarind seed: native high-molecular-weight xyloglucan (XG

Targeted expression of Glycine max isoflavone synthase enhances daidzein and genistein content in soybean.

Isoflavonoids are key secondary metabolites in leguminous plants that play essential roles in plant physiology and provide significant health benefits to humans. In the isoflavone biosynthetic pathway, isoflavone synthase (IFS) catalyzes the conversion of naringenin and liquiritigenin into the bioactive isoflavones genistein and daidzein. This study aimed to enhance genistein and daidzein accumulation in soybean seeds through genetic engineering. A sustainable strategy for alfalfa establishment: optimized reduced-rate tank mixtures for controlling Amaranthus retroflexus and Chenopodium album.

BACKGROUND: Alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.), a globally significant perennial leguminous forage crop, is widely cultivated in Inner Mongolia. Problematic weeds present a significant challenge to alfalfa production during the seedling stage, especially redroot pigweed (Amaranthus retroflexus L.) and common lambsquarters (Chenopodium album L.). However, limited information is available on pre-emergence herbicides effective against both redroot pigweed and common lambsquarters in alfalfa fields during the establishment phase in Inner Mongolia. RESULTS: We examined the effects of 12 pre-emergence he
