[Work-stress and cortisol; measurements and results].

Physiological measurements of stress are believed to help with the 'objectivation' of the rather subjective phenomenon called 'stress'. Because there are only moderate interpersonal correlations between the subjective experience of work-stress and physiological stress measurements, the latter are useful mainly for comparing groups with high stress and groups with low stress and not as a diagnostic tool at individual level. Physiological measurements have added value because they quantify the strain that stress exerts on the body, which ultimately determines what effect stress has on health. In

[Exploration of life experiences of an aged woman in a military housing community through reminiscing on photos].

Reminiscence therapy helps elders recall memories of old times through activities designed to achieve self-healing. The qualitative case in this research was a 70 year-old woman who had lived in a military village for 40 years. Semi-structured questionnaires were used for the interview and data was recorded and transcribed word for word. Analytical methods used the three major patterns of reminiscing over objects, vertical and horizontal life. In reminiscing over objects, the author performed interconnected analysis using selected objects that were beloved and/or had special meaning to the sub

In search of Aristotle: temperament, human nature, melancholia, creativity and eminence.

Is suffering associated with melancholia and "madness" necessary for artistic creativity and eminence? Or do creativity and leadership have something to do with the temperaments associated with affective disease? We integrate concepts dating back to Greek psychological medicine and philosophy--especially work attributed to Aristotle--with modern data-based examination of the role of cyclothymic and related temperaments in the interface between mixity, the bipolar spectrum and normality. We place our query within the general framework of evolutionary biology and human nature. In doing so, we pr

Building a campus crisis team.

Crisis events can produce waves of shock, fear, and disbelief throughout a community. The university campus is a community and no stranger to crisis events. Incidents such as natural disasters, bus accidents, fire, and death on campus have demonstrated this fact. Communities, including the university, are becoming more aware of the need to develop plans to respond to these crisis events. Communities that are prepared to respond to such events may moderate the impact that the crisis has on a community. This article discusses the issues confronted by a small liberal arts university's faculty and

[Type A behaviour and life events as risk factors for cerebral infarct].

INTRODUCTION: The role of psychosocial factors in cerebral infarct has been little studied and is therefore still undefined. OBJECTIVE and methods. To evaluate the effect of a pattern of behaviour which predisposes to stress, and of life events, on the occurrence of cerebral infarct, we studied a group and control involving 88 patients with cerebral infarcts diagnosed clinically and on imaging studies, and a control group of 99 persons paired for age and sex who lived in our health district. To evaluate the behaviour pattern we used Jenkins abbreviated questionnaire and for life events the Hol

Disclosure of traumas and psychosomatic processes.

Results from a series of studies are summarized in support of a general theory of inhibition and psychosomatics. According to this view, to inhibit thoughts, feelings, or behaviors is associated with physiological work. In the short term, inhibition results in increased autonomic nervous system activity. Over time, inhibition serves as a cumulative stressor that increases the probability of psychosomatic disease. Actively avoiding thoughts and feelings surrounding a trauma and/or not discussing a trauma is a particularly insidious form of inhibition. The results from recent surveys and experim

Elective mutism: a case study of a disorder of childhood.

This paper reviews a number of treatment strategies utilized in the treatment of a 6-year-old boy with a history of multiple parental separations. When the patient presented to the child psychiatric clinic, he had a history of not speaking in the preceding four months, following the arrival of a stepmother in the household and a move to a new house in a new locality. Developmental and psychometric assessments are presented and their utility in early diagnosis and later prognosis are discussed. Reluctant speech is differentiated from, and compared with, elective mutism. The management of electiv

Anxiety and mitral valve prolapse syndrome.

The diagnosis of Mitral Valve Prolapse Syndrome (MVPS), even though symptomatically similar to anxiety neurosis, may prompt pharmacological treatment only, neglecting any underlying emotional problems. If only a dichotomy were considered, one diagnosis might be seen as mutually exclusive of the other. A case history is presented illustrating features of both clinical syndromes. We consider the interaction of both etiologies, as well as the possibility of both being unrelated and coincidental. As physiological factors are explored when the diagnosis of anxiety neurosis is considered, so should

Life events and escape in conversion disorder.

BACKGROUND: Psychological models of conversion disorder (CD) traditionally assume that psychosocial stressors are identifiable around symptom onset. In the face of limited supportive evidence such models are being challenged. METHOD: Forty-three motor CD patients, 28 depression patients and 28 healthy controls were assessed using the Life Events and Difficulties Schedule in the year before symptom onset. A novel 'escape' rating for events was developed to test the Freudian theory that physical symptoms of CD could provide escape from stressors, a form of 'secondary gain'. RESULTS: CD patient

Stressful life events and tinnitus : Reflections and speculations.

The role of life events has not been extensively studied in the context of tinnitus. There is, however, evidence about the psychological impact of tinnitus and about the influence of psychological processes as mediators of the tinnitus experience. On the basis of this evidence, the possibility that stressful life events can act as a trigger for tinnitus is discussed; although the evidence is fragmentary and indirect, the possibility cannot be discounted. It is argued that the onset of tinnitus and the associated clinical encounters can constitute an acute stressful life event, and the ongoing

Stressful life events, post-traumatic stress disorder symptoms and mental health in individuals with intellectual disabilities: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Stressful life events are events that do not fulfil the A criterion of PTSD in the DSM-5(TR) but are perceived as negative by the person. There is an ongoing debate about the usefulness of the A criterion as a gate criterion for PTSD, and especially regarding which events qualify as traumatic or stressful life events. This debate is particularly important for individuals with intellectual disabilities (ID) or borderline intellectual functioning (BIF), as they seem to be more likely to experience traumatic and stressful life events than their peers without ID-BIF and appear to be mo

Specific and cumulative lifetime stressors in the aetiology of major depression: A longitudinal community-based population study.

AIMS: Early-life stressful circumstances (i.e. childhood maltreatment) coupled with stressful events later in life increase the likelihood of subsequent depression. However, very few studies have been conducted to examine the specific and cumulative effects of these stressors in the development of depression. There is also a paucity of research that simultaneously considers the role of biological factors combined with psychosocial stressors in the aetiology of depression. Guided by the biopsychosocial model proposed by Engel, the present study aims to examine to what extent the experience of s

The life experience of leprosy families in maintaining interaction patterns in the family to support healing in leprosy patients in Indonesian society. A phenomenological qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Family involvement in overcoming the severity of leprosy is very important in the life of leprosy sufferers in communities who experience the clinical and, psychological, social and behavioral consequences of the disease. However, this need, psychosocial, is felt to be not optimal. This study is to identify how the experiences of family members as caregivers provide assistance to individuals with leprosy in improving healing and maintaining patterns of interaction in the family. METHODS: The design uses qualitative research with in-depth, face-to-face interviews with family member
