Auto-infection by Echinostoma spp. cercariae in Helisoma anceps.

Auto-infection is a life history strategy used by many parasitic organisms, including digenetic trematodes. The process of autoinfection most frequently involves the transfer of a life cycle stage of the parasite from one site to another inside the same host, usually accompanied by morphological transformation. Moreover, among trematodes, the stage being transferred may also move from one host to another in completing the life cycle, i.e., an indirect cycle. Echinostoma spp. parasites offer the opportunity to study auto-infection because they utilize gastropods as both first and second interme

Finding the brakes on the Toxoplasma life cycle.

Toxoplasma gondii motility is an all-or-nothing response. Claywell et al. identify negative-feedback loops in cyclic-nucleotide signaling that allow parasites to turn off motility and commit to intracellular replication. Feedback mechanisms and bistability are useful frameworks for describing, modeling, and testing T. gondii motility signaling pathways.

Comparative and systems analyses of Leishmania spp. non-coding RNAs through developmental stages.

Leishmania spp. is the etiological agent of leishmaniases, neglected diseases that seek to be eradicated in the coming years. The life cycle of these parasites involves different host and stress environments. In recent years, many studies have shown that several protein-coding genes are directly involved with the development and host interactions. However, little is still known about the role of non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs) in life cycle progression. In this study, we aimed to identify the genomic structure and function of ncRNAs from Leishmania spp. and to get insights into the repertoire of ncRN

Psychodid flies and their implicated role in human myiasis and pseudomyiasis.

Several psychodid flies are commonly associated with human-inhabited environments and have been increasingly implicated in cases of human myiasis. However, the basic biology of psychodid larvae is not well-suited for survival in the human intestinal or urogenital tract, making true, prolonged myiasis unlikely. In this review, we performed a systematic literature review of published cases of purported myiasis caused by psychodid flies, their identification, associated clinical findings, and treatment. We also discuss the anatomy and lifecycle of psychodid flies in relation to their purported ab

Gametogenesis in Plasmodium: Delving Deeper to Connect the Dots.

In the coming decades, eliminating malaria is the foremost goal of many tropical countries. Transmission control, along with an accurate and timely diagnosis of malaria, effective treatment and prevention are the different aspects that need to be met synchronously to accomplish the goal. The current review is focused on one of these aspects i.e., transmission control, by looking deeper into the event called gametogenesis. In the Plasmodium life cycle, gametocytes are the first life forms of the sexual phase. The transmission of the parasite and the disease is critically dependent on the number

Cross-species transcriptomics identifies core regulatory changes differentiating the asymptomatic asexual and virulent sexual life cycles of grass-symbiotic Epichloë fungi.

Fungi from the genus Epichloë form systemic endobiotic infections of cool season grasses, producing a range of host-protective natural products in return for access to nutrients. These infections are asymptomatic during vegetative host growth, with associations between asexual Epichloë spp. and their hosts considered mutualistic. However, the sexual cycle of Epichloë spp. involves virulent growth, characterized by the envelopment and sterilization of a developing host inflorescence by a dense sheath of mycelia known as a stroma. Microscopic analysis of stromata revealed a dramatic increase in

Identifying the vector of Lyme disease.

Lyme disease is the most common vector-borne illness in the United States. It is caused by the spirochete Borrelia burgdorferi, which is transmitted by the deer tick. Deer ticks have a four-stage life cycle (egg, larva, nymph, and adult), and nymphal ticks transmit B. burgdorferi to humans more frequently than adult ticks. Transmission of this spirochete typically requires a minimum of 24 to 48 hours of tick attachment. Early stages of Lyme disease are characterized by a hallmark rash, erythema migrans. The overall risk of acquiring Lyme disease is low in a person who has a deer tick bite. If

The immunobiology of schistosomiasis.

Schistosomes are parasitic worms that are a prime example of a complex multicellular pathogen that flourishes in the human host despite the development of a pronounced immune response. Understanding how the immune system deals with such pathogens is a daunting challenge. The past decade has seen the use of a wide range of new approaches to determine the nature and function of the immune response to schistosomes. Here, we attempt to summarize advances in our understanding of the immunology of schistosomiasis, with the bulk of the review reflecting the experimental focus on Schistosoma mansoni i

Hydatidosis: dynamics of transmission.

Hydatidosis is a widespread zoonosis infecting a large number of animals and humans. Echinococcus granulosus has the smallest taenia adult of the cestodes but with the largest larva. Its morphologic and biologic features were identified with DNA analysis. Different strains were separated according to the intermediate hosts: sheep, cattle, pigs, horses, camels. Definitive host are canids, mostly dogs, where the worm grows to adulthood in several months. The eggs are scattered in the pasture by wind and water and are ingested by various hosts. The larvae migrate through the intestinal wall and p

The caligid life cycle: new evidence from Lepeophtheirus elegans reconciles the cycles of Caligus and Lepeophtheirus (Copepoda: Caligidae).

The developmental stages of the sea louse Lepeophtheirus elegans (Copepoda: Caligidae) are described from material collected from marine ranched Korean rockfish, Sebastes schlegelii. In L. elegans, setal number on the proximal segment of the antennule increases from 3 in the copepodid to 27 in the adult. Using the number of setae as a stage marker supports the inference that the post-naupliar phase of the life cycle comprises six stages: copepodid, chalimus I, chalimus II, pre-adult I, pre-adult II, and the adult. We observed variation in body length in both of the chalimus stages which we con

Heterogeneous constraint and adaptation across the malaria parasite life cycle.

Evolutionary forces vary across genomes, creating disparities in how traits evolve. In organisms with complex life cycles, it is unclear how intrinsic differences among discrete life stages impact evolution. Here, we look for life history-driven patterns of adaptation in Plasmodium falciparum, a malaria-causing parasite with a multi-stage life cycle. We posit that notable differences across the P. falciparum life cycle-including cell ploidy, the extent of clonal competition and the presence of transmission bottlenecks-alter the drift-selection balance acting at discrete life stages. Cystoisospora suis - the non-model model coccidium.

Cystoisospora suis, the cause of suckling piglet coccidiosis, is an intestinal protozoan pathogen of worldwide distribution and major economic and animal health significance in swine industry. It is closely related to cyst-forming, facultatively heteroxenic Coccidia like Toxoplasma gondii and Neospora caninum, but its biology resembles more that of the non-cyst-forming, homoxenic genus Eimeria. Lately, a unique in vitro cultivation system for C. suis was developed by which sporozoites infect monolayer cell cultures to produce merozoites which can in turn be propagated in a host-cell free syste

Natural history of the parasite Waddycephalus in the Townsville region of north-east Australia.

Waddycephalus is an understudied genus of pentastomids native to Australia and south-east Asia. The genus was recognized in 1922 but there has been little research on these pentastomid tongue worms over the last century. A few observations suggest a complex life cycle through 3 trophic levels. We aimed to add knowledge to the Waddycephalus life cycle in woodland habitats in the Townsville region of north-east Australia. We used camera trapping to identify the most likely first-intermediate hosts (coprophagous insects), we conducted gecko surveys to identify multiple new gecko intermediate host

A Stroll Through the History of Monoxenous Trypanosomatids Infection in Vertebrate Hosts.

The Trypanosomatidae family encompasses unicellular flagellates and obligate parasites of invertebrates, vertebrates, and plants. Trypanosomatids are traditionally divided into heteroxenous, characterized by the alternation of the life cycle between an insect vector and a plant or a vertebrate host, including humans being responsible for severe diseases; and monoxenous, which are presumably unique parasites of invertebrate hosts. Interestingly, studies reporting the occurrence of these monoxenous trypanosomatids in humans have been gradually increasing, either associated with Leishmania co-inf

Life cycle energy consumption, environmental impact, and costing assessment of coal to ethylene glycol processes via dimethyl oxalate and formaldehyde.

The popularization of conventional dimethyl oxalate to ethylene glycol (DMOtEG) has kept ongoing in the past decade in China. Recently, a northern China factory in construction attracts attention using alternative formaldehyde to ethylene glycol (FtEG) route. Thus, a question arises about the individual comparative advantages of these two processes. So, this paper conducts a systematic modeling analysis of DMOtEG and FtEG, and the life cycle assessment is performed by SimaPro v9 to compare their impact. The results indicate the inferiority of life cycle energy consumption and life cycle cost o

Clostridia isolated from helminth-colonized humans promote the life cycle of Trichuris species.

Soil-transmitted intestinal worms known as helminths colonize over 1.5 billion people worldwide. Although helminth colonization has been associated with altered composition of the gut microbiota, such as increases in Clostridia, individual species have not been isolated and characterized. Here, we isolate and sequence the genome of 13 Clostridia from the Orang Asli, an indigenous population in Malaysia with a high prevalence of helminth infections. Metagenomic analysis of 650 fecal samples from urban and rural Malaysians confirm the prevalence of species corresponding to these isolates and rev
