A life-history trade-off gene with antagonistic pleiotropic effects on reproduction and survival in limiting environments.

Although life-history trade-offs are central to life-history evolution, their mechanistic basis is often unclear. Traditionally, trade-offs are understood in terms of competition for limited resources among traits within an organism, which could be mediated by signal transduction pathways at the level of cellular metabolism. Nevertheless, trade-offs are also thought to be produced as a consequence of the performance of one activity generating negative consequences for other traits, or the result of genes or pathways that simultaneously regulate two life-history traits in opposite directions (a

Phenotypic variation in populations of the mosquito vector, Aedes aegypti, and implications for predicting the effects of temperature and climate change on dengue transmission.

There is concern that increases in temperature due to climate change could lead to shifts in the transmission dynamics and distribution of mosquito vectors. Many current models assume there are 'average' thermal performance curves for a given vector species' life-history traits. However, this 'one-size-fits-all' assumption ignores the potential for standing phenotypic variation in life-history traits to create population-specific differences in thermal performance. In this study, we explored thermal performance of five independent field populations of Ae. aegypti from Mexico, together with a s

Relationships Among Sex, Sexual Orientation, Dark Triad Traits, Sociosexuality, and Sexual Excitation/Inhibition.

Subclinical narcissism, psychopathy, and Machiavellianism are a cluster of manipulative, callous, and entitled traits known as the Dark Triad (DT). These traits have been repeatedly linked to short-term mating strategies and a tolerance for uncommitted sexual behavior (i.e., unrestricted sociosexuality) in both men and women, a pattern interpreted as consistent with life history theory. Alongside sociosexuality, individuals vary in their distinct capacities toward sexual excitation and sexual inhibition. Although much research has examined the relationships between DT traits and sociosexuality

Interplay Between Species Traits, Community and Environmental Context Governs Temporal Stability in Riverine Fish Populations.

Understanding the mechanisms underlying the temporal stability of ecological systems remains a challenge. Although temporal stability in populations is posited to emerge from the interplay between intrinsic and extrinsic factors, the nature of these interactions remains poorly understood. Here, we analysed abundance time-series for 7912 populations from 287 fish species across 1557 streams spanning multiple biogeographic realms. We evaluated how species traits interact with environmental and biotic contexts to shape temporal stability. Populations were most stable among equilibrium-strategist

Advancing Theory Underlying Diversity-Disease Relationships: Competence in the Context of Life History, Demography, and Disease.

Biodiversity loss can increase parasite transmission via the dilution effect when two criteria are met. First, if communities consist of hosts that span a gradient of competence, from highly competent species that amplify transmission to low-competence species that decrease transmission. Second, if biodiversity loss is non-random, such that low-diversity communities possess a disproportionately high number of highly competent hosts. Infection is then predicted to spread more efficiently in low-diversity (high competence) communities. These criteria offer a compelling direct connection between

Life history correlations and trade-offs resulting from selection for dispersal in Tribolium castaneum.

Dispersal is an important facet of the life history of many organisms and is, therefore, subject to selective pressure but does not evolve in isolation. Across nature, there are examples of dispersal syndromes and life history strategies in which suites of traits coevolve and covary with dispersal in combinations that serve to maximize fitness in a given ecological context. The red rust flour beetle, Tribolium castaneum, is a model organism and globally significant post-harvest pest that relies on dispersal to reach new patches of ephemeral habitat. Dispersal behaviour in Tribolium has a stron

Different adverse childhood experiences and adolescents' altruism: The mediating role of life history strategy.

INTRODUCTION: The present study sought to investigate whether the relationship between childhood trauma, childhood socioeconomic (SES), and adolescents' altruism were mediated by their life history strategies and different adverse childhood experiences may function diversely on altruism, with two waves of data collected 6 months apart in a longitudinal design among Chinese adolescents. METHODS: A total of 658 adolescents (Mage  = 13.51, SD = 0.73 at T1) were recruited and completed the online survey; their life history strategies were measured by the Mini-K, the Delayed of Gratification Quest

Palaeohistology reveals a slow pace of life for the dwarfed Sicilian elephant.

The 1-m-tall dwarf elephant Palaeoloxodon falconeri from the Pleistocene of Sicily (Italy) is an extreme example of insular dwarfism and epitomizes the Island Rule. Based on scaling of life-history (LH) traits with body mass, P. falconeri is widely considered to be 'r-selected' by truncation of the growth period, associated with an early onset of reproduction and an abbreviated lifespan. These conjectures are, however, at odds with predictions from LH models for adaptive shifts in body size on islands. To settle the LH strategy of P. falconeri, we used bone, molar, and tusk histology to infer

Assessment of trade-offs between feed efficiency, growth-related traits, and immune activity in experimental lines of layer chickens.

BACKGROUND: In all organisms, life-history traits are constrained by trade-offs, which may represent physiological limitations or be related to energy resource management. To detect trade-offs within a population, one promising approach is the use of artificial selection, because intensive selection on one trait can induce unplanned changes in others. In chickens, the breeding industry has achieved remarkable genetic progress in production and feed efficiency over the last 60 years. However, this may have been accomplished at the expense of other important biological functions, such as immunit

Comparative analysis of microbial communities, assembly processes, and life-history strategies in a mariculture-impacted eutrophic bay and adjacent coastal sediments.

Coastal embayments are increasingly subjected to intensive mariculture, which delivers sustained nutrient, organic matter, and antibiotics to sediments, yet microbiome responses remain poorly understood. Here we compared sediment microbiomes of the eutrophic Xiangshan Bay (XSB) and oligotrophic East China Sea (ECS), integrating cell counts, 16S rRNA amplicon, metagenomics, and cultivation-based resistance assays. Cell counts and amplicon data showed that XSB harbored higher microbial abundance (1.28 ×108-1.34 ×109 vs. 2.07 ×107-4.43 ×108 cells g⁻¹), Chao1 richness (10,374-16,674 vs. 8311-12,28

Bottom trawling affects trophic niche diversity of red mullet in muddy bottoms of the Mediterranean continental shelf.

Bottom trawling causes detrimental effects on marine ecosystems, and significantly alter benthic communities, potentially affecting the diet and trophic role of benthic feeders. The ban on bottom trawling is a common spatial fishing restriction that has been implemented in tropical and temperate regions to restore overexploited marine resources and ecosystems. In northern Sicily (central Mediterranean Sea) two trawl ban areas, the Gulf of Castellammare and the Gulf of Patti, were established in 1990. In both gulfs, the red mullet Mullus barbatus, a commercially important demersal fish and bent

Experimental trait mismatches uncover specificity of evolutionary links between multiple signaling traits and their interactions in hummingbirds.

Many animal signals co-occur, and these signals may coevolve due to their interactive properties. Previous work has demonstrated ecological drivers of evolutionary relationships between signals and the environment, which leads to questions about why specific signal pairs evolved among species that possess multiple signals. We asked whether the coloration of different species was optimized for presentation with its natural behavioral display. We investigated this in "bee" hummingbirds, where males exhibit angle-dependent structurally-colored plumage and a stereotyped courtship (shuttle) display

Microbial island biogeography: isolation shapes the life history characteristics but not diversity of root-symbiotic fungal communities.

Island biogeography theory is one of the most influential paradigms in ecology. That island characteristics, including remoteness, can profoundly modulate biological diversity has been borne out by studies of animals and plants. By contrast, the processes influencing microbial diversity in island systems remain largely undetermined. We sequenced arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungal DNA from plant roots collected on 13 islands worldwide and compared AM fungal diversity on islands with existing data from mainland sites. AM fungal communities on islands (even those >6000 km from the closest mainlan

Snail intermediate host/Schistosoma haematobium relationships from three transmission sites in Benin (West Africa).

The relationships between three strains of Schistosoma haematobium (Doh, Sô-Tchanhoué and Toho-Todougba; from Benin, West Africa) and their snail hosts were assessed by measurement of several life-history traits, including the infection rate; pre-patent period; cercarial production of each parasite strain; and growth, fecundity and survival of the host snails. Adaptations to its local snail host was found for the Toho-Todougba strain and included a short pre-patent period, a long patent period and production of more cercariae in its local snail host. In contrast, the life-history traits of the

Optimal outbreeding is shaped during larval life history in the splash pool copepod Tigriopus californicus.

Inbreeding and outbreeding depression are dynamic forms of selection critical to mating system evolution and the efficacy of conservation biology. Most evidence on how the relative severity and timing of these forces are shaped is confined to self-fertilization, distant outcrossing, and intermediate "optimal outcrossing" in hermaphrodites. We tested the notion that closed population demographics may reduce and delay the costs of inbreeding relative to distant outbreeding in an intertidal copepod with separate sexes and a biphasic larval/post-metamorphic life history (Tigriopus californicus). A

Natural-history traits suspected behind interspecific variations of bark- and wood-boring beetles in response to trap size and design.

The performances of traps used for pest monitoring are not well understood. Variable trap sizes and shapes make cross-comparisons difficult. We tested with four Scolytinae species (Coleoptera, Curculionidae) a set of traps of the same model (fan-traps) in four sizes (310, 536, 832.5, 1,200 cm2), and a larger trap with another design (a four-vane trap, 4,500 cm2). A significantly linear relationship was observed between trap sizes and catches for Pityogenes chalcographus, but the catches of Ips typographus, Trypodendron lineatum and T. signatum tapered off. In the literature, comparable taperin

Are sleeping site ecology and season linked to intestinal helminth prevalence and diversity in two sympatric, nocturnal and arboreal primate hosts (Lepilemur edwardsi and Avahi occidentalis)?

BACKGROUND: Various factors, such as climate, body size and sociality are often linked to parasitism. This constrains the identification of other determinants driving parasite infections. Here, we investigate for the first time intestinal parasites in two sympatric arboreal primate species, which share similar activity patterns, feeding ecology, body size and sociality, and cope with the same climate conditions, but differ in sleeping site ecology: the Milne-Edward's sportive lemur (Lepilemur edwardsi) and the Western woolly lemur (Avahi occidentalis). Comparison of these two species aimed to

Influence of body condition on the population dynamics of Atlantic salmon with consideration of the potential impact of sea lice.

Atlantic salmon Salmo salar is an iconic species of high conservation and economic importance. At sea, individuals typically are subject to sea lice infestation, which can have detrimental effects on their host. Over recent decades, the body condition and marine survival in NE Atlantic stocks have generally decreased, reflected in fewer adults returning to rivers, which is partly attributable to sea lice. We developed a deterministic stage-structured population model to assess condition-mediated population dynamics resulting in changing fecundity, age at sexual maturation and marine survival r

Behavioural, morphological and life-history adjustments in the early steps of colonising restricted semi-natural environments in wild house mice.

BACKGROUND: Invasive species often exhibit rapid adjustment and establishment in novel environments. However, the mechanisms underlying this process remain poorly understood, particularly during the early stages of invasion. Understanding how behavioural, morphological, and life-history traits vary across generations under different environmental conditions is important for identifying the factors that contribute to invasion success. We investigated how different diet compositions influence these traits across multiple generations (F0-F3) of wild house mice in semi-natural enclosures, with one
