Cross-linguistic transfer of phonological skills: a Malaysian perspective.

This study examined the phonological and reading performance in English of Malaysian children whose home language was Bahasa Malaysia (BM). A sample of 69 Malaysian Standard Two pupils (aged 7-8 years) was selected for the study. Since commencing school at the age of 6 years, the children had been learning to read in BM and had subsequently also been learning to read in English for some 12 months. The study was part of a larger scale research programme that fully recognized the limitations of tests that had not been developed and standardized in Malaysia. Nevertheless, as a first step to devel

Linguistic significance of babbling: evidence from a tracheostomized infant.

The role of babbling in language development is not well understood. One source of evidence is the utterances of infants who were tracheostomized during the period in which they would normally have produced syllabic vocalization. We describe here the phonetic patterns and linguistic development of a girl called Jenny. She was tracheostomized and generally aphonic from 0.5-1.8 but cognitively and socially normal, with near-normal comprehension of language. Acoustic analyses of Jenny's utterances following decannulation revealed a tenth of the canonical syllables which might be expected in norma

Reading disability: a discussion of visual, auditory, and linguistic factors.

A case is presented in which the chief complaint of letter reversals and poor reading achievement suggests a visual or visual-perceptual problem. Analysis of the history, refraction, visual skills, and visual-perceptual test results indicates that a visual system dysfunction is not a significant factor in this case. Rather, a linguistic skills deficit is suggested by the pattern of errors exhibited on the tests. The influence of linguistic skills on several commonly used visual tests is discussed.

Cross-linguistic phonological activation in Chinese- English-Korean trilinguals.

This study investigates whether phonological similarity alone can drive cross-linguistic activation across non-native languages in trilingual lexical processing. Using a masked priming lexical decision task, we examined phonological priming from English (L2) to Korean (L3) in Chinese-English-Korean unbalanced trilinguals. Critically, homophone pairs were employed to minimize semantic and orthographic overlap, allowing for a clearer examination of phonological priming than previous studies relying on cognates. The results showed a robust phonological priming effect between non-native languages,

HelexKids 2.0: A linguistically annotated lexical database building on HelexKids.

HelexKids 2.0 represents an annotated expansion of the original HelexKids, a word frequency database compiled from Greek and Cypriot elementary school textbooks. This article presents the extended annotation methodology employed to enrich the database with part-of-speech tags, phonological properties (syllable count, phonetic transcription, orthographic and phonological syllabification, and stress), and morphological features (case, number, gender, and inflection class for nouns). All original frequency and lexical measures are retained, and new ones (e.g., PLD20, bigram and biphone frequencie

Linguistically Informed Automated Estimates of Creak in Adductor Laryngeal Dystonia.

PURPOSE: Creaky voice is a perceptually low-pitched and irregular voice quality that has shown promise as an objective marker of adductor laryngeal dystonia (AdLD). However, creak also occurs in mainstream American English through linguistic processes (i.e., phrase-final creak, /t/ glottalization, word-initial vowel glottalization). This study investigated whether linguistically unexpected creak (i.e., creak occurring outside these phonological contexts) offers improved differentiation between AdLD and typical voices compared with total creak. METHOD: Fifty speakers with AdLD and 50 age- and

Linguistic features from paragraph recall are markers of cognitive impairment.

OBJECTIVE: Cognitive impairment is associated with language changes that emerge during verbal responses to neuropsychological assessments that traditional scoring does not capture. The current study investigated the utility of a linguistic analysis of paragraph recall responses for detecting cognitive impairment. METHODS: Digital voice recordings of logical memory (LM) were available from 598 Long Life Family Study participants with normal cognition and 112 with cognitive impairment. Linguistic polyfeature scores for immediate (PFS-IR) and delayed recall (PFS-DR) were created from weighted su

Linguistic correlates of Chinese children with developmental dyslexia: a systematic review.

Developmental dyslexia can negatively affect children's cognitive, emotional, and academic development. This systematic review synthesizes findings from cross-sectional studies on linguistic correlates of developmental dyslexia in Chinese children. A total of 50 studies comprising 185 effect sizes were synthesized using a random-effects model to identify key linguistic correlates. Four significant correlates were identified: morphological awareness (Hedges's g = -1.14), phonological awareness (Hedges's g = -1.14), orthographic awareness (Hedges's g = -0.99), and rapid automatic naming (Hedges'

The shrinking landscape of linguistic diversity in the age of large language models.

Language is far more than a communication tool; it encodes a wealth of information about a person's identity, psychological state and social context, providing valuable insights for diverse fields including psychology, marketing and healthcare. Across three studies spanning seven datasets in different domains and over 880,000 texts, we show that the widespread adoption of large language models (LLMs) as writing assistants is linked to declines in linguistic diversity, interfering with the societal and psychological insights language provides. While core content is retained when LLMs polish and

The Role and Meaning of Hospital Food for Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Patients.

AIM: This study explored the perceptions of former Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) hospital patients and carers regarding the role and meaning of hospital food during hospitalisation and recovery. METHODS: Using a descriptive qualitative design guided by a social constructionist approach, four focus groups (n = 28) were conducted with participants from Asian, Mediterranean, Arabic, and Indian Subcontinent communities at a major Australian metropolitan health service. Purposively recruited participants included former inpatients or caregivers who discussed their experiences in fac

Pauses as a Quantitative Measure of Linguistic Planning Challenges in Parkinson's Disease.

Background/Objectives: Pausing is a multifaceted phenomenon relevant to motor and cognitive disorders, particularly Parkinson's Disease (PD). Thus, examining pauses as a metric for linguistic planning and motor speech difficulties in PD patients has gained significant attention. Here, we examined the production of silent and filled pauses (indexing difficulties at various linguistic processing levels) during narrative tasks to investigate the interplay between pausing behavior and informativeness/productivity measures. Methods: Individuals' pausing patterns during narratives were analyzed rela

The discriminative linguistic profiles of progressive supranuclear palsy and Parkinson's disease.

INTRODUCTION: Speech and language disturbances are very frequent in progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP). Therefore, they are part of the diagnostic criteria set forth by the International Parkinson and Movement Disorder Society (MDS) for the disease and are considered a core clinical feature. However, more studies are needed to characterize the linguistic profile of PSP, thus being able to assist in the differential diagnosis. Additionally, studies assessing linguistic differences among PSP phenotypes are needed. The objective of this study is to analyze the language alterations presented by

The impact of individual factors on linguistic alignment of autistic boys and their mothers.

Linguistic alignment reflects shared linguistic behaviors (e.g. syntax and lexicon) between interlocutors. Recent work has examined whether autistic children align to the same degree as their non-autistic peers, with current findings inconclusive. This study took an in-depth approach to investigating factors contributing to variation in linguistic alignment among autistic individuals. Eighteen school-age and adolescent autistic male participants, 14 males with fragile X syndrome + autism, and their mothers participated in the study. Dyads engaged in an unstructured conversation for ~12 min. Us

Translation, Linguistic Validation, and Reliability of the CLEFT-Q in a German Context.

The aim of this study was to translate and culturally adapt the CLEFT-Q questionnaire into German and evaluate its reliability as an instrument for Patient Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs). The translation followed the International Society for Pharmacoeconomics and Outcomes Research (ISPOR) guidelines. Applicability was tested through cognitive debriefings with 7 patients. Adjustments were made during the process to achieve a conceptually equivalent translation. Reliability was assessed by conducting retest interviews with 50 patients at 4-week intervals. Translation challenges included diff

Linguistic Markers of Theory of Mind in Spontaneous Speech: A Narrative Review.

The relationship between theory of mind (ToM) or mentalizing, i.e., the cognitive ability to attribute mental states to oneself and others, and language has been widely explored across disciplines. Identifying reliable linguistic markers of ToM extractable from individuals' speech provides a promising path for both research and clinical practice. In this narrative review, we aimed to synthesize findings from studies identified through a PSYCINFO search to provide an overview of speech-based markers associated with ToM abilities. Our results revealed six primary categories of relevant speech ma

Cerebellar-Induced Aphasia After Stroke: Evidence for the "Linguistic Cerebellum".

The cerebellum is traditionally known to subserve motor functions. However, for several decades, the concept of the "cerebellar cognitive affective syndrome" has evolved. Studies in healthy participants and patients have confirmed the cerebellar role in language. The exact involvement of the cerebellum regarding cerebellar aphasia remains uncertain. We included 43 cerebellar stroke patients who were tested at 3 months post-onset with the Boston Naming Test (BNT), the Token Test (TT), and the Diagnostic Instrument for Mild Aphasia (DIMA). Lesion side (left/right) and volume (cm3) were investiga

Validation of the Arabic Linguistic Version of the Prolapse and Incontinence Knowledge Questionnaire.

INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS: Pelvic floor disorders (PFDs), significantly impacting women's quality of life, are often underdiscussed owing to misconceptions and limited understanding of treatment options. This study is aimed at validating an Arabic version of the Prolapse and Incontinence Knowledge Questionnaire (PIKQ) to assess knowledge of pelvic organ prolapse (POP) and urinary incontinence (UI) among Arabic-speaking women, addressing knowledge gaps in these areas. METHODS: The study obtained ethical approval and followed a two-stage process, including a pilot study for preliminary valida

Assessing Relative Linguistic Impairment With Model-Based Item Selection.

PURPOSE: A picture naming test is presented that reveals impairment to specific mechanisms involved in the naming process, using accuracy scores on curated item sets. A series of psychometric validation experiments are reported. METHOD: Using a computational model that enables estimation of item difficulty at the lexical and sublexical stages of word retrieval, two complimentary sets of items were constructed that challenge the respective psycholinguistic levels of representation. The difference in accuracy between these item sets yields the relative linguistic impairment (RLI) score. In a co

Linguistic characteristics in bipolar disorder versus borderline personality disorder.

Scientific evidence has documented throughout the research carried out in recent years, the neuropsychological, behavioral and adaptive difficulties presented by people with Bipolar Disorder and Borderline Personality Disorder at different stages of their development. However, little importance has been given to other factors such as communication, especially in the adult population. The objective of this research was to know the language characteristics presented by people from both groups and the differences in linguistic development. The sample consisted of 60 participants between the ages
