Hyperspectral imaging as a diagnostic tool to differentiate between amalgam tattoos and other dark pigmented intraoral lesions.

The goal of this project is to identify any in-depth benefits and drawbacks in the diagnosis of amalgam tattoos and other pigmented intraoral lesions using hyperspectral imagery collected from amalgam tattoos, benign, and malignant melanocytic neoplasms. Software solutions capable of classifying pigmented lesions of the skin already exist, but conventional red, green and blue images may be reaching an upper limit in their performance. Emerging technologies, such as hyperspectral imaging (HSI) utilize more than a hundred, continuous data channels, while also collecting data in the infrared. A t

Feline maxillary sarcoma: clinicopathologic features of spindle cell sarcomas from the maxilla of 25 cats.

CASE SERIES SUMMARY: Feline maxillary sarcomas are aggressive spindle cell neoplasms that occur within the maxilla, palate and upper lip of cats. This diagnosis includes fibrosarcoma and sarcomas with indeterminate histomorphology, excluding melanocytic tumors and sarcomas that can be differentiated by histomorphology. In this study of feline maxillary sarcomas in 25 cats, the cats' ages ranged from 4 to 16 years (median 12.5). These sarcomas presented as smooth thickenings or mass lesions of the gingiva and palate, often involving both the right and left quadrants of the maxilla. Radiographic

Papillary cystadenoma of anterior one-third of the tongue.

Papillary cystadenoma is an unusual benign cystic neoplasm with cystic spaces of diverse sizes and intraluminal papillary projections histologically, which is commonly seen in the lips, cheek and palate. We report a case of papillary cystadenoma in a 40-year-old man on the anterior one-third of the tongue with classical histological features. The paper highlights the rarity of the site of occurrence with emphasis on differential diagnosis and the need for considering papillary cystadenoma when benign cystic lesions are encountered in the anterior one-third of the tongue.

Minor salivary gland hyalinisation and amyloidosis in low-grade lymphoma of MALT.

Two patients with low-grade lymphoma of mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) arising in primary Sjögren's syndrome developed solitary nodules in their lips. Histologically both lesions showed enlargement and hyalinisation of single minor salivary glands with acinar atrophy, loss of most ducts and conversion into almost acellular sclerotic eosinophilic masses. In one case the lesion was shown to contain an amyloid component. No amyloid was detected in the second case but deposition of collagen and basement membrane and sclerotic neoplasm were excluded.

Angiomyxolipoma of the hard palate: a rare case report.

Lipoma is a common, benign soft tissue neoplasm consisting of mature adipocytes. Other variants exist, notably angiomyxolipoma, also referred to as vascular myxolipoma, which is an exceedingly rare benign lipomatous tumor characterized by the intimate admixture of three components: mature adipose tissue, paucicellular myxoid stroma, and a prominent vascular network. We present the case of a 55-year-old female patient who presented with a palatal swelling. Histopathological examination after surgical excision revealed an angiomyxolipoma. No abnormalities were noted after one year. Angiomyxolipo

Intraoral and facial rehabilitation retained with zygomatic implants and magnets after complete resection of the maxilla, lip and nose: A clinical report.

Prosthetic rehabilitation is an option available for patients with extensive maxillofacial defects with the ability to restore esthetics and function. The surgical procedure can result in anatomical and functional sequelae leading to functional, psychological and aesthetic disorders. This clinical case report describes the unique and highly-specialized fabrication method of an oral and facial prosthesis for a patient with a near total maxillectomy, excision of upper lip, rhinectomy and radiotherapy for treatment of an extensive malignant neoplasm. Four carefully placed zygomatic implants were

Current perspectives on the origin theory of juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma.

Juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma (JNA) is a histopathologically benign and highly vascular neoplasm, which is mainly seen in young adolescent men. It is a rare tumor, accounting for 0.05% of all head and neck neoplasms. The etiology of JNA has always been a controversial topic. Some researchers believe that it is a genuine tumor. Others consider that it is the result of vascular malformation caused by the non-absorption of artery residues in the first branchial arch during development, and that hormone and genetic effects are also related to its etiology. In addition, the JNA was so called

A Case Report of Paraneoplastic Pemphigus Associated With Retroperitoneal Inflammatory Myofibroblastic Tumor.

Paraneoplastic pemphigus (PNP) is an autoimmune bullous disease associated with underlying neoplasms, both malignant and benign. The most constant clinical presentation of PNP is the presence of intractable stomatitis. Herein we present a 25-year-old male with a 3-month history of refractory stomatitis especially involving the lips and widespread vesiculobullous eruption on his trunk and extremities. The diagnosis of PNP was confirmed based on histological and serological results. Investigation for the underlying neoplasm revealed a retroperitoneal tumorous mass which was biopsied and diagnose

Polydactyly and Risk of Cancer.

INTRODUCTION: Syndromic polydactyly is often associated with an increased cancer risk. However, limited data exist regarding nonsyndromic polydactyly and its associated risk of subsequent malignancy. Therefore, our purpose was to investigate differences in rates of both malignant and benign neoplasms among pediatric patients diagnosed with nonsyndromic polydactyly compared with matched controls. METHODS: The TriNetX US Collaborative Network database was queried using ICD-9 and ICD-10 codes to identify patients aged 10 and younger diagnosed with any form of polydactyly. Patients were then divi

Calcinospherules: A Unique Morphology of Dystrophic Calcification That Mimics Deep Fungal Infection.

Dystrophic calcification may occur in association with cutaneous neoplasms. We report the case of a 50-year-old woman with unusual appearing dystrophic calcification that was mistaken for coccidiomycosis during Mohs micrographic surgery for an invasive squamous cell carcinoma on the lower lip. The term "calcinospherule" is suggested as a term to describe the round calcified bodies found within the lesion that mimicked spherules with endospores characteristic of Coccidioides imitis infection. Both the dermatopathologist and Mohs micrographic surgeon should be aware of this entity as well as oth

Feline Lower-Lip Apocrine Sweat Gland Adenocarcinoma with Mandibular Nodal Metastasis: A Case Report.

Apocrine sweat gland adenocarcinoma is an uncommon feline adnexal neoplasm, and lower-lip involvement is rarely documented. A 14-year-old spayed female Siamese cat was evaluated for a firm 1.3 cm right lower-lip mass at a documented hemorrhagic lesion site. Approximately 1 year earlier, the lesion was fluctuant and superficially erosive to ulcerative; fine-needle aspiration yielded bloody fluid with cytologically nondiagnostic material. The lesion reportedly subsided after empirical treatment, but reassessment, tissue diagnosis, and objective confirmation of resolution were not performed. Cyto

Pleomorphic Adenoma Of Minor Salivary Glands.

Pleomorphic adenoma is the most common benign tumour of salivary glands which is Known for its wide pleomorphic architecture. It accounts for 45-75% of all salivary gland neoplasm. It can involve major as well as minor salivary glands. Among minor salivary glands (5-10% of cases) the palate lip, nasal cavity, pharynx, larynx and trachea are the most common sites. Diagnosis is made with biopsy along with histopathology. Wide excision with biopsy and removal of underlying extension of tumour is the treatment of choice. Sixty years old farmer presented with painless swelling in the upper lip for

Lower lip teratoma with ventral capillary malformation in an infant: case report and literature review.

Teratomas are tumors that are derived from two or three of the primordial germ layers: ectoderm, mesoderm and endoderm. They arise most commonly in a midline or paraxial location from the brain to the sacral area and are most often located in the sacrococcygeal region. Head and neck teratomas are rare neoplasms and their incidence is 1 in 20,000-40,000 live births. 90% of head and neck teratomas present during the neonatal and infantile period, predominantly involve the neck and nasopharynx. Teratomas rarely originate from other superficial structures of the head. This paper describes an excep

Pleomorphic Adenoma of the Palate: A Detailed Case Report and Surgical Outcome.

Pleomorphic adenoma is the most common salivary gland neoplasm, accounting for a significant proportion of both major and minor salivary gland tumors. While it most frequently arises in the parotid or submandibular glands, it can occasionally present as an intraoral mass over the palate or lip when originating from the minor salivary glands. A palatal pleomorphic adenoma typically presents as a painless, gradually enlarging mass on the posterior lateral aspect of the palate. This article discusses a case of a palatal pleomorphic adenoma, which was successfully managed with surgical excision.

Lipoma or hemangioma: A diagnostic dilemma?

Lipomas and hemangiomas are well-known benign lesions of the body. However, their occurrence in the oral cavity is rare. Lipoma accounts for 1-4% of benign neoplasms of mouth affecting predominantly the buccal mucosa, floor of mouth and tongue. Hemangiomas occur mostly on the lips, buccal mucosa, tongue, and palate. Lipomas when superficially placed show yellowish surface discoloration and hemangiomas usually have reddish blue to deep blue color. Here, we report an unusual case of benign tumor occurring in the buccal vestibule.

Oral manifestations of AIDS in a heterosexual population in a Zaire hospital.

Oral lesions associated with HIV infection as classified by the WHO Collaborative Centre for Oral manifestation of HIV were studied in 83 heterosexual AIDS patients in Kinshasa, Zaire. One or more lesions were fungal (94%), bacterial (33%) and viral (23%). Neoplasm was found in 12% of cases while lesions of unknown etiology in 14%. As location of those lesions, the palate, lips, tongue and the buccal mucosae mostly predominate as sites. The findings from this study were clinically similar to those reported in AIDS in other areas.

Case Series: Pleomorphic adenoma in minor salivary gland.

Pleomorphic adenomas (PA) are the most prevalent benign salivary gland neoplasms. They may occur at any age, with a peak incidence between 40 and 60 years of age. They are more commonly observed in females (60%). These tumors can arise in both the major and minor salivary glands. Approximately 80% of these tumors are diagnosed in the parotid gland, whereas 10% arise in the minor salivary glands, mainly affecting the palates, followed by the lips and cheeks. This report describes two cases of unusual lesions that were diagnosed as (PA) in the minor salivary glands in our department via a review
