BACKGROUND/AIMS: This study investigates the possible relationship between inflammation and cardiac valve calcification (VC) in patients on hemodialysis (HD), and identifies risk factors for VC in this patient group.
METHODS: Seventy-nine patients on HD (mean age, 52.2 +/- 13.6 years; mean HD duration, 46.8 +/- 34.3 months) were assessed echocardiographically for the presence of VC. Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB) induces vigorous immune responses, yet persists inside macrophages, evading host immunity. MTB bacilli or lysate was found to inhibit macrophage expression of class II MHC (MHC-II) molecules and MHC-II Ag processing. We report two cases with ichthyosis vulgaris, hypogenitalism and hypogonadism. So far, little endocrinological information has been available on this association and the exact type of ichthyosis was unknown. Our first patient suffered from very severe hypergonadotropic hypogonadism, whereas the second patient showed normal levels of luteinizing hormone, but slightly elevated follicle stimulating hormone values. Classical phenylketonuria (PKU) (McKusick 261600) is an inborn error of metabolism treated by a controlled low-phenylalanine (Phe) diet started as soon as possible in the first days of life. Such a diet can be achieved with vegetable protein and can be considered non-atherogenic because of the reduction of animal products. Thirty patients with PKU were classified into two groups according to their annual mean Phe levels. PURPOSE: To assess whether bone mineral density, indicated by the lumbar X-ray scan, is related to changes in choroid thickness in normal subjects.
METHODS: This study included 355 patients with decreased bone mineral density and 355 age- and sex-matched healthy subjects. Lumbar BMD was measured by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA). Choroidal thickness was measured using swept-source optical coherence tomography (SS-OCT). Membrane-anchored lipoproteins have a broad range of functions and play key roles in several cellular processes in Gram-positive bacteria.
