Knowledge of breast cancer and its early detection measures among rural women in Akinyele Local Government Area, Ibadan, Nigeria.

BACKGROUND: Breast cancer is the commonest cancer among women in Nigeria and globally. In Nigeria, late presentations of breast cancer cases have also been consistent for three decades. In an environment where there is no established national screening program for breast cancer, it is pertinent to assess the knowledge of breast cancer and its early detection measures. The objective of this study therefore, was to assess rural women's level of knowledge of breast cancer and its early detection measures. METHODS: The knowledge of various aspects of breast cancer; etiology, early warning signs,

Guinea worm (Dracunculus medinensis) eradication: a pilot study conducted at the Ohaukwu Local Government Areas, Ebonyi State, Nigeria, West Africa.

The incidence and the prevalence of Guinea worm disease, a major cause of disability and a frequent cause of serious permanent deformity, were both drastically reduced in Ohaukwu Local Government Communities, with the provision (through bore holes) of a safer form of drinking water. Since 1986, the Carter Center program has been working to eradicate Guinea worm. The bore holes were dug through the Wasatan Project, a Japanese-funded grant awarded to the Enugu State Ministry of Health to help provide safer drinking water in the local communities. Bore holes were dug in several communities in Oha

Locally ordered junctions govern diffusion in triglycerides: insights from molecular dynamics simulations.

Triglycerides (TGs) exhibit diverse flow behaviours that are essential for applications ranging from food and pharmaceuticals to renewable fuels and advanced lubricants. Despite sharing nearly identical atomic compositions and similar bulk thermodynamic properties, different TGs display markedly different viscosities, and the microscopic origins of these distinct behaviours remain unclear. Herein, we performed all-atom molecular dynamics simulations to investigate three representative TGs with different chain lengths and degrees of unsaturation: trioctanoin (8 : 0), triolein (18 : 1), and tril

Formyl-peptide receptor 2 governs leukocyte influx in local Staphylococcus aureus infections.

Leukocytes express formyl-peptide receptors (FPRs), which sense microbe-associated molecular pattern (MAMP) molecules, leading to leukocyte chemotaxis and activation. We recently demonstrated that phenol-soluble modulin (PSM) peptides from highly pathogenic Staphylococcus aureus are efficient ligands for the human FPR2. How PSM detection by FPR2 impacts on the course of S. aureus infections has remained unknown. We characterized the specificity of mouse FPR2 (mFpr2) using a receptor-transfected cell line, homeobox b8 (Hoxb8), and primary neutrophils isolated from wild-type (WT) or mFpr2-/- mic

Longitudinal localization of leukaemic stem cells between the metaphysis and central marrow governs their behaviour.

Leukaemic stem cells (LSCs) reside in protective bone marrow (BM) niches that promote therapeutic resistance and relapse. Here we characterized longitudinal BM niches supporting LSC survival, distinguishing the metaphysis from the central marrow. Quiescent LSCs preferentially localized to the metaphysis and exhibited reduced stemness and aggressiveness upon mobilization to the central marrow. Targeting DPP4 in acute myeloid leukaemia (AML) cells altered CXCL12 gradients at three spatial scales. Systemically, reversal of the BM-peripheral blood CXCL12 gradient confined AML cells within the BM.

Landscape attributes governing local transmission of an endemic zoonosis: Rabies virus in domestic dogs.

Landscape heterogeneity plays an important role in disease spread and persistence, but quantifying landscape influences and their scale dependence is challenging. Studies have focused on how environmental features or global transport networks influence pathogen invasion and spread, but their influence on local transmission dynamics that underpin the persistence of endemic diseases remains unexplored. Bayesian phylogeographic frameworks that incorporate spatial heterogeneities are promising tools for analysing linked epidemiological, environmental and genetic data. Here, we extend these methodo
