The records of forty-two patients with lymphoma of bone [.11 with Hodgkin disease (HD), 31 with non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL)] were retrospectively reviewed to correlate histologic type with sites of osseous involvement, radiographic patterns of bone destruction, and prognosis. The vertebral column was the most frequent site of axial involvement and the femur was the commonest site overall. In HD, the most frequent radiographic pattern was vertebral sclerosis, while periosteal reaction was noted in two focal femoral lesions and hypertrophic pulmonary osteoarthropathy in one patient. In NHL, perme…

Malignant lymphoma is classified roughly into Hodgkin's disease (HD) and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) according to the biological characteristics. Malignant lymphoma in Japan has such characteristics as low incidence of HD, which is usually favorable in prognosis, and high incidence of NHLs, which have further distinctive features of less incidence of favorable follicular B cell lymphoma and of higher incidence of unfavorable diffuse T cell lymphoma including adult T cell leukemia/lymphoma (ATLL) in comparison with those in western countries. As a recent trend of progress in lymphoma study, th…

Cancer is the second leading cause of death in children and, among cancers, lymphoma is the third most frequently diagnosed type. The majority of these are non-Hodgkin's lymphomas (NHL). Although NHL have been grouped in a variety of confusing ways, recent research in cytogenetics and immunology, coupled with a better understanding of the normal pathways of lymphoid differentiation, has greatly lessened this confusion. Burkitt's lymphoma (BL) is a type of B-cell NHL which is sub-classified as either endemic (African) or non-endemic (American). Kinetic studies have demonstrated a doubling time …

The current classification of lymphoid neoplasms is based on clinical information, morphology, immunophenotype, and molecular genetic characteristics. Despite technical and scientific progress, some aggressive B-cell lymphomas with features overlapping between two different types of lymphomas remain difficult to classify. The updated 2008 World Health Organization (WHO) classification of Tumours of the Hematopoietic and Lymphoid Tissues has addressed this problem by creation of two new provisional categories of B-cell lymphomas, unclassifiable; one with features intermediate between diffuse la…

From 1970 to 1978 22 children with Hodgkin's lymphomas at the age of 4-15 years were treated at the university children's hospital of Jena. There were 16 patients with the first appearance of the disease and 6 with relapses. The stage classification was carried out after the Ann-Arbor-classification. A "staging" operation with laparotomy and splenectomy was performed in 17 children. The histological material was classified after the Rye-modification of the Lukes-Butler-classification. The clinical staging showed 8 patients in stage I, 7 in stage II, 6 in stage III and one child was in stage IV…

Burkitt lymphoma (BL) remains a prevalent pediatric cancer in sub-Saharan Africa and was the first human cancer identified with a virus when Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) was discovered in a Ugandan BL tumor in 1964. The impact of EBV in BL is highlighted by a new molecular tumor classification of EBV positivity versus negativity which is starting to supersede longstanding epidemiologic classifications. The high incidence of EBV-positive BL in Africa and Papua New Guinea has been linked to Plasmodium falciparum (Pf) malaria coinfections in young children. Epidemiologic studies have yielded insight …

Burkitt lymphoma is a mature aggressive B-cell neoplasm with distinctive clinical and morphologic features, a germinal center B-cell immunophenotype, a high proliferation index and MYC rearrangement with an immunoglobulin gene partner. Initially described in equatorial Africa by a surgeon, Denis Burkitt, African (endemic) Burkitt lymphoma was the first neoplasm shown to be associated with a virus, Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), and the first neoplasm shown to be associated with a chromosomal translocation, IGH::MYC. In this article, we provide a brief historical introduction of Burkitt lymphoma, fo…

Burkitt lymphoma (BL) is an aggressive form of B cell lymphoma that can affect children and adults. The study of BL led to the identification of the first recurrent chromosomal aberration in lymphoma, t(8;14)(q24;q32), and subsequent discovery of the central role of MYC and Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) in tumorigenesis. Most patients with BL are cured with chemotherapy but those with relapsed or refractory disease usually die of lymphoma. Historically, endemic BL, non-endemic sporadic BL and the immunodeficiency-associated BL have been recognized, but differentiation of these epidemiological varia…

Vitreoretinal lymphoma (VRL) is a rare variant of primary central nervous system lymphoma (PCNSL), mostly of diffuse large B cell lymphoma, which affects the retina and/or the vitreous with or without optic nerve involvement. The disease course is aggressive. Up to 90% of the patients develop central nervous system lymphoma within one year. The diagnosis of VRL is challenging due to nonspecific chronic and relapsing uveitis and is made by anterior chamber tab or vitreous aspirate biopsy. There is no established treatment protocol for VRL patients with bilateral involvement without CNS involvem…

Twenty-five years after the Revised European American Classification of Lymphoid Neoplasms classification was published, its principle of an integrative approach to disease definition based on several parameters still prevails and has been adopted and expanded in the following World Health Organization classifications of tumors of the hematopoietic organs. The latest World Health Organization classification revised in 2017 comprises more than 80 entities of mature lymphoid neoplasms (B-cell, T-cell, and Hodgkin lymphomas), which are defined according to their morphology, immunophenotype, genet…
