CC17 Streptococcus agalactiae carrying group-A prophages is increasingly responsible for neonatal infections. To investigate the impact of t … ole of prophage features in cell autoaggregation, glycocalyx and biofilm formation. We suggest that lysogeny may promote GBS adaptation to the acid environment of the vagina, consequently colonizing and infecting neonates.

Bacteriophages have proven invaluable in combatting drug-resistant bacteria. Bias towards exclusive use of obligately lytic phages has restricted the range of phage therapy, however, since at least half of all Caudovirecetes are temperate, and such phages remain the only option available for many problematic pathogens - including the notorious members of the Burkholderia cepacia complex (Bcc). Temperate phage-antibiotic synergy (tPAS), a unique strategy that leverages lysogen-forming phages as adjuvants to traditional antibiotics, has been validated for phages infecting E. coli and P. aerugino

OBJECTIVE: Prophages, as an integral part of bacterial genomes, play a pivotal role in regulating host virulence and shaping bacterial evolution. Exposure to antibiotics, particularly those that cause DNA damage, can trigger a shift from lysogeny to the lytic cycle, i.e., initiate prophage induction.
METHODS: This review compares the effects of various antibiotic classes on prophage induction, with particular emphasis on the associated clinical consequences.
RESULTS: This process can lead to undesirable consequences, such as increased toxin production, enhanced transduction frequency, and mo…

Streptococci might employ this mechanism specifically to allow more efficient adaptation to changing host challenges, potentially leading to fitter and more virulent clones.

Striking differences in the production of specific inhibitory agents affecting other strains of the same (or of related) species were found between genera of the family Enterobacteriaceae. We tested 50-163 strains each of the potentially pathogenic genera: Escherichia, Citrobacter, Enterobacter, Kluyvera, and Leclercia for their ability to produce bacteriophages, high-molecular-weight (HMW) and low-molecular-weight (LMW) bacteriocins and siderophores against the same sets of strains, using the cross-test method. The genus Escherichia differs substantially from all other Enterobacteriaceae, har

The SaPIs are 15- to 17-kb mobile pathogenicity islands in staphylococci. They usually carry two or more superantigens and are responsible for most superantigen-related human diseases, especially staphylococcal toxic shock syndrome. SaPIs are extremely common in Staphylococcus aureus, with all but one of the sequenced genomes containing one or more. The SaPIs have a highly conserved overall genome organization, parallel to that of typical temperate phages. Each occupies a specific chromosomal site from which it is induced to excise and replicate by one or more specific staphylococcal phages. F

The use of bacteriophage-encoded murein hydrolases (endolysins) is being actively explored as a means of controlling multidrug-resistant pathogens. Previously, we isolated and characterized one such enzyme, the phage ΦEf11 ORF28 lysin, which demonstrated profound antimicrobial activity against many strains of Enterococcus faecalis. Although the lysin is eminently active against many vancomycin-resistant enterococal (VRE) strains, and displays lower minimum inhibitory concentrations than vancomycin against vancomycin-sensitive strains, there is a subset of E. faecalis strains that is not affect

Melioidosis, a serious illness caused by Burkholderia pseudomallei, results in up to 40% fatality in infected patients. The pathogen is found in tropical water and soil. Recent findings demonstrated that bacterial numbers can be regulated by a novel clade of phages that are abundant in soil and water. These phages differentially infect their bacterial hosts causing lysis at high temperatures and lysogeny at lower temperatures. Thus seasonal and daily temperature variations would cause switches in phage-bacteria interactions. We developed mathematical models using realistic parameters to explor…

The distribution of phage-types was studied among 434 strains of S. typhi from Bagdad, Amara and Bassora. Biotypes, colicinogeny, tetrathionate-reductase activity (TTR) and susceptibility to Salmonella phage O.I. were also studied. The most frequent phage-types in Irak were A, D1, E1 alpha, F1, M1, O, T, 46 and two other large groups of strains (I + IV and Vi degraded strains). Only 4.38% of S. typhi were TTR-; the strains of phage-type 53 were TTR+. Colicinogeny was demonstrated in 2.5% of S. typhi (lysotype 40, group I + IV and Vi degrades strains). All strains were lysed by Salmonella phage

Several phage hosts of group A streptococci became resistant to lysis by bacteriophage as a consequence of having acquired the ability to grow in the presence of chloramphenicol. The phage was adsorbed to the streptococcal cell, and P(32)-labeling of the phage showed that the phage genome penetrated the chloramphenicol (CM)- resistant cells as it did the parent cells. However, artificial lysis of the infected CM-resistant cells with chloroform or enzymes revealed no intracellular mature phage particles. Lysates of infected CM-resistant cells contained no phage-related antigenic materials which

Due to the increasing reports of carbapenemase-producing Enterobacteriaceae (CPE) from livestock in recent years, the European Reference Laboratory for Antimicrobial Resistances (EURL-AR) provided a protocol for their recovery from caecum and meat samples. This procedure exhibited limitations for the detection of CPE with low carbapenem MIC values. Therefore, it was modified by a second, selective enrichment in lysogeny broth with cefotaxime (CTX 1 mg/L) and with meropenem (MEM 0.125 mg/L) at 37 °C under microaerophilic conditions. By Real-time PCR, these enrichments are pre-screened for the m…

Group A Clostridium perfringens is a major poultry pathogen that causes necrotic enteritis. The molecular similarity of its toxins to those of other bacterial species suggests the involvement of horizontal gene transfer through mobile genetic elements or bacteriophages. Lysogenic bacteriophages play an important role in bacterial evolution through horizontal gene transfer. In the present study, we examined and compared the physiochemical characteristics, genome sequences, and tail fiber proteins of two lysogenic bacteriophages infecting C. perfringens. Bacteriophages ΦCP5(17) and ΦCP17(i) were

Staphylococcus aureus is a major cause of human and animal infections. Bacteriophage are a class of mobile genetic element (MGE) that carry virulence genes and disseminate them horizontally, including Panton-Valentine leukocidin (PVL), the immune evasion cluster (IEC) associated with human specificity, and enterotoxin A the major toxin associated with food poisoning. S. aureus isolates group into major clonal complex (CC) lineages that largely evolve independently due to possession of different restriction-modification (RM) systems. We aimed to better understand the horizontal and vertical tra

Exfoliative toxin A (ETA) causes staphylococcal scalded-skin syndrome in children. The gene for ETA was believed to be coded by the chromosomal DNA. We isolated temperate phages from an ETA-producing strain, ZM, using a restriction minus strain, 1039, as an indicator. One of the prophages, designated phi-ZM-1 mediated lysogenic conversion of ETA. The polymerase chain reaction assay of the eta gene revealed that phage phi-ZM-1 carries the structural gene for ETA.

Twenty strains of Clostridium botulinum type C, including 12 isolates from avian sources with varying toxigenic properties, were examined by electron microscope for the presence of bacteriophages. All toxigenic strains were infected with one or two types of phages. Three types of phages designated large, small, and intermediate were observed. Most of the strains carried the large and small phage, with the large phage being present in much greater numbers. Since there is evidence that highly toxigenic strains of C. botulinum type C are responsible for large outbreaks of botulism in wild birds,
