Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are a common clinical problem, especially among women. Ultrasound assessment is indicated in case of complic … coccal cysts. Ultrasound imaging is less specific in diagnosing xanthogranulomatous pyelonephritis, malacoplakia and renal tuberculosis. Finally, several authors recommend routine ultrasound assessment in HIV patients, given the high incidence of renal complications in this population of patients.

Malakoplakia is a rare chronic granulomatous disease usually affecting the urinary bladder and other locations. In humans, the gastrointestinal tract is the second most common location but there are no reports of intestinal malakoplakia in animals. A 10-month-old female French Bulldog was presented with chronic haemorrhagic diarrhoea and anorexia with normochromic-normocytic anaemia and hypoalbuminaemia. Grossly, there was mucosal thickening and ulceration of the caecum, colon and rectum. Microscopically, transmural sheets of foamy macrophages were seen in these tissues. Macrophages were perio

AIMS: Three cases of chronic periapical periodontitis including focal areas with malakoplakia changes are reported.
METHODS AND RESULTS: These areas included both von Hansemann-type macrophages and periodic acid-Schiff-positive, iron- and calcium-containing concretions. Some concretions corresponded to spherules with a targetoid configuration, thus fitting the morphological criteria for classical Michaelis-Gutmann bodies.
CONCLUSION: The vast majority of the cases of malakoplakia that have been reported in the literature corresponded to a characteristic, fairly homogeneous lesion, but a few

We report a case of an elderly female with a history of long-standing urinary tract infection, who developed sudden macroscopic hematuria. A renal clear-cell carcinoma with diffuse pyelonephritis and malakoplakia was discovered at nephrectomy. This is the first neoplasia of the kidney associated with malakoplakia ever published.

Malakoplakia, a rare acquired histiocytic inflammatory disease. It is an incidental finding on histopathology examination, as it does not have definite clinical manifestations. It typically affects the genitourinary tract but can also involve various anatomical sites. We present malakoplakia involving the left thigh, a rare extragenital manifestation. A 42-year-old male patient presented with insidious left thigh swelling, which gradually increased in size over a year, without associated pain or systemic symptoms. Imaging and fine needle aspiration cytology prompted a suspicion of malignancy.

Malakoplakia is an uncommon inflammatory disease that can involve many organ systems but is often encountered in the urogenital tract. Kidney allograft malakoplakia is even rarer and can have a diffuse parenchymal or a pseudotumoral presentation. We describe a case of grafi malakoplakia in an adult female, who presented with dull aching pain in the right loin, fever, and vomiting. Ultrasonography of the kidney graft showed a heterogeneous lesion (2.6 cm × 2.9 cm), raising suspicion of primary or metastatic renal tumors. The diagnosis was established after a histopathological examination of the

Malakoplakia is a rare histiocytic disease first described in 1902 by Michaelis and Gutmann. It is associated with host immunocompromise including chronic inflammatory conditions, infectious conditions or malnutrition. Here, we report the case of uterine malakoplakia as a rare cause of postmenopausal bleeding in an immunocompromised patient.

Diagnosis of malakoplakia presenting as gall bladder mass is a diagnostic dilemma faced by pathologists, radiologists, and surgeons. Malakoplakia is a rare inflammatory disorder and tumor mimicker usually occurring in the urinary tract, may occasionally be found in gall bladder. Here, we present a rare case, presenting as gall bladder mass in a known case of gallstone disease, clinically suspected as carcinoma and later turned out to be malakoplakia in gall bladder.

Malakoplakia is a rare, chronic disease with pleomorphic presentation. It occurs most frequently in immunocompromised patients. It is believed that this entity represents an unusual response to bacterial infection in which macrophages fail to phagocytose them properly. It involves many organs, particularly the urinary and gastrointestinal tracts. It is uncommon on the skin and less common in children. The diagnosis is usually based on histopathologic findings.

Malakoplakia, typically involving the urinary tract, is an uncommon form of chronic inflammation caused by chronic infections and characterized by accumulation of macrophages. It has also been found in many other sites such as the gastrointestinal tract, pancreas, liver, lymph nodes, skin, respiratory tract, adrenal gland, vagina and brain. We present a case of a 64-year-old man referred to our hospital with cachexia and radiologic evidence of metastatic tumor of the liver. Colonoscopy revealed a large malignant - appearing polypoid mass of the ascending colon and multiple distinct polyps thro

A 62-year-old African American woman presented with weight loss and dyspepsia. She did not have any clinical evidence of immunodeficiency. Upper gastrointestinal endoscopy revealed multiple small polypoid lesions in the gastric body and fundus that appeared larger and more erythematous than usual fundic gland polyps. Examination of biopsy specimens revealed an infiltrate of large histiocytes with eosinophilic granular cytoplasm located in the lamina propria and containing Michaelis-Gutmann bodies. These histologic findings were diagnostic of gastric malakoplakia. Gastrointestinal malakoplakia

Colonic malakoplakia can occur either as a part of systemic disease with multiple colonic and extracolonic deposits or as an incidental finding associated with a rectal or sigmoidal adenocarcinoma. A case is reported which shows an association between malakoplakia and adenocarcinoma of the caecum.

We report the case of a 73-year-old woman who presented respectively a caecal adenocarcinoma, two high-grade dysplastic tubulo-villous adenomas of the right colon, and a well differentiated adenocarcinoma developed on a high-grade dysplastic tubulo-villous adenoma of the left colon. One of the right colonic adenomas was ulcerated and showed typical foci of malakoplakia in the lamina propria. Malakoplakia is a histiocytic inflammatory response that may be associated with inflammatory and infectious diseases, immunosuppressive therapy, or colorectal carcinoma. Association of malakoplakia with co

Malakoplakia is a rare lesion of granulomatous inflammation which mainly affects urinary bladder but may involve other parts of the body. Differentiation from neoplastic process is often difficult due to its tumorous gross appearance and similarity to carcinoma microscopically. Malakoplakia of the prostate is even rare. We present a case of prostatic malakoplakia masquerading as a rectal tumor due to formation of a fistulous tract to the rectal muscular layers accompanied with ulceration of the rectal mucosa. Its clinical course is different from those of most reported cases, while the outcome

Granulomatous diseases associated with Escherichia coli infection are uncommon in domestic animals. In cats, malakoplakia and granulomatous ulcerative colitis are the only described forms. We investigated the clinical and pathological findings of E. coli-associated granulomatous diseases in three cats. In all cases the affected organs were infiltrated by many macrophages containing periodic acid-Schiff-positive intracytoplasmic granules. The macrophages immunolabelled for ionized calcium-binding adapter molecule 1 and E. coli. The first case involved the urinary bladder and was diagnosed as ma
