Maternal pesticide exposure from multiple sources and selected congenital anomalies.

We explored the relation between various potential sources of maternal periconceptional pregnancy exposures to pesticides and congenital anomalies in offspring. Data were derived from a case-control study of fetuses and liveborn infants with orofacial clefts, neural tube defects, conotruncal defects, or limb anomalies, among 1987-1989 California births and fetal deaths. We conducted telephone interviews with mothers of 662 (85% of eligible) orofacial cleft cases, 265 (84%) neural tube defect cases, 207 (87%) conotruncal defect cases, 165 (84%) limb cases, and 734 (78%) nonmalformed controls. Fetal exposure to involuntary maternal smoking and childhood respiratory disease.

BACKGROUND: Several studies have now gone beyond the effects of smoking during pregnancy to examine the effects of involuntary maternal smoke exposure on fetal development. A link has also been indicated between postnatal environmental smoke exposure and long-term respiratory problems in infants. OBJECTIVE: Our study examines whether an association exists between maternal exposure to environmental tobacco smoke and childhood respiratory disorders. METHODS: A cross-sectional design was implemented utilizing a maternal questionnaire survey. The surveys were distributed throughout the county's …

Factors affecting the outcome of maternal alcohol exposure: I. Parity.

Despite relatively comparable amounts of alcohol ingestion, not all women who drink excessively give birth to children with fetal alcohol effects. One reason for this differential effect may be maternal parity. To explore this question, pregnant rats of the same age but different parities (first and fourth pregnancy) were intubated during pregnancy with alcohol. Whereas both parity and alcohol exposure independently affected birth weight and perinatal mortality, there was no interaction between the two suggesting that parity per se is not a factor contributing to the differential effects of ma

Rat fetal development and maternal exposure to trichloroethylene 100 p.p.m.

Thirty-two inbred Wistar rats (study group) were exposed to trichloroethylene 100 p.p.m. in air for 4 h daily from day 8 to day 21 of pregnancy. A control group (31 rats) was exposed to the same experimental conditions but without the addition of trichloroethylene. All the rats were sacrificed on the 21st day of pregnancy and the ovaries, uterus, liver, lungs, heart and the fetuses were examined. There was no evidence of teratogenesis, but a delay in fetal maturation was suggested by reduced fetal weight (P less than 0.05) and by an increase in bipartite or absent skeletal ossification centres

From Maternal Exposure to Fetal Risk: Unraveling the PFAS Exposure Pathway and Its Placental Toxicity Mechanism.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) have triggered a global crisis due to their severe toxicities and widespread occurrence in human populations. Notably, PFAS is frequently detected in maternal blood, placental tissue, and umbilical cord blood, indicating direct fetal exposure to PFAS through the maternal-fetal interface. As the central organ regulating nutrient exchange, endocrine signaling, and immune balance, the placenta is particularly vulnerable to PFAS exposure, and its dysfunction is linked with various adverse pregnancy outcomes, including fetal growth restriction, low birth w

Association Between Maternal Exposure to Lead, Maternal Folate Status, and Intergenerational Risk of Childhood Overweight and Obesity.

IMPORTANCE: The first pediatric lead screening typically occurs at 1-year well-child care visits. However, data on the extent of maternal lead exposure and its long-term consequences for child health are lacking. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the associations between maternal red blood cell (RBC) lead levels and intergenerational risk of overweight or obesity (OWO) and whether adequate maternal folate status is associated with a reduction in OWO risk. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: Prospective birth cohort study. The analysis was conducted from July 14, 2018, to August 2, 2019, at Johns Hopk

Maternal hypothyroxinemia and brain development: I. A hypothetical control system governing fetal exposure to maternal thyroid hormones.

Maternal hypothyroxinemia consequent on endemic iodine deficiency is associated with an increased incidence of neurological disorders in the offspring. Such correlations were originally postulated as reflecting direct effects of elemental iodine on fetal brain development during early pregnancy, it being generally believed that maternal thyroid hormones do not cross the placenta in significant amount in consequence of the presence of elevated concentrations of TBG in maternal blood. However TBG possesses the capacity to enhance T4 transport to particular target organs during pregnancy. This re

Maternal body mass index and oxytocin exposure in nulliparous women: is there an interaction associated with maternal and neonatal morbidities?

OBJECTIVE: Increasing body mass index (BMI) and administered doses of oxytocin are related to maternal and neonatal morbidities. We evaluated the effect of oxytocin dosage, BMI, and their interaction on select perinatal outcomes. STUDY DESIGN: We retrospectively studied nulliparas with singletons ≥36 weeks' gestation who received oxytocin and reached the second stage of labor. Oxytocin dosage was defined by the oxytocin product ([maximum oxytocin dose] × [duration of oxytocin infusion]/100 (milliunits)). Outcomes included cesarean, postpartum hemorrhage, puerperal infection, and a composite o

Effects of maternal exposure to indoor air pollution on maternal health and pregnancy outcomes in Wenzhou City, China.

Indoor air pollution, originating from household and chemical sources, has attracted increasing attention as an important risk factor for maternal and fetal health in densely populated Chinese cities such as Wenzhou, due to the widespread use of chemical products and inadequate ventilation. This study investigated its impact on maternal health and pregnancy outcomes, in which 520 nonsmoking pregnant women (aged 18-40 years) from antenatal clinics in Wenzhou were enrolled in a prospective cohort study. Indoor pollutants (concentrations of formaldehyde, nitrogen dioxide, volatile organic compoun

Fetal exposures and maternal mental disorders in pregnancy: a network analysis.

Maternal mental health represents a significant global health burden, not only in terms of maternal wellbeing, but also for the impact it has on child development. The relationship between maternal mental health and deleterious environmental exposures to the fetus is one mechanism of risk transmission. This study utilizes network analysis to a) explore how maternal mental health is associated with a wide array of fetal exposures, and b) examine how these exposures cluster together. A total of 485 pregnant women were recruited from the Mercy Hospital for Women in Melbourne, Australia between 20

Prenatal exposure to ethion caused maternal and foetal toxicity in rats.

Ethion is a class II moderately toxic organothiophosphate pesticide. The main objective of this study was to evaluate the maternal and foetal toxicity of ethion in rats. Pregnant rats were divided into 5 groups. Group I served as control. Group II, III, IV, and V were orally administered with 0.86, 1.71, 3.43, and 6.9 mg/kg of ethion respectively, from gestational day (GD) 6-19. Dams were sacrificed on GD 20. Maternal toxicity was assessed by body weight gain, foetal resorptions, oxidative stress, liver and kidney function tests, and histopathology. Foetal toxicity was assessed by physical sta

In utero exposure to maternal diabetes or hypertension and childhood hypothalamic gliosis.

Exposure to maternal diabetes (DM) or hypertension (HTN) during pregnancy impacts offspring metabolic health in childhood and beyond. Animal models suggest that induction of hypothalamic inflammation and gliosis in the offspring's hypothalamus is a possible mechanism mediating this effect. We tested, in children, whether in utero exposures to maternal DM or HTN were associated with mediobasal hypothalamic (MBH) gliosis as assessed by brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The study included a subsample of 306 children aged 9-11 years enrolled in the ABCD Study®; 49 were DM-exposed, 53 were HT

Maternal sex-hormone exposure and the risk of eating disorders in daughters.

Potential effects of prenatal sex hormones on later eating disorders in offspring have been investigated with two indirect methods (finger length ratio, opposite- versus same-sex twins). We utilized a direct, prospective method, examining the association between prenatal sex-hormones in maternal sera and the risk of bulimia nervosa (BN) and anorexia nervosa (AN) among daughters. Females with BN (55), AN (150), sister controls without eating disorders (one per case), and population controls (one per case) were derived from Finnish registers. Maternal gestational testosterone and estradiol level

Effects of maternal exposure to procymidone on hepatic metabolism in the offspring of mice.

As an effective fungicide widely used in agricultural production, the excessive procymidone (PRO) residue has been detected in the environment and food. Our previous study demonstrated that PRO could destroy the intestinal barrier in mice and has a joint toxic effect. To explore the cross-generational impact of maternal exposure, 10-week-old C57BL/6 female mice were orally administrated to 10 and 100 mg/kg body weight/day of PRO during pregnancy and lactation. The offspring obtained nutrients from the maternal through the placenta and breast milk, and PRO residues were detected in the liver, i…

Environmental Exposure: Effect on Maternal Morbidity and Mortality and Neonatal Health.

Environmental factors are important causes that impair global pregnancy outcomes and are, importantly, responsible for maternal morbidity and mortality. However, apart from the direct reasons for maternal deaths, mainly obstetric and neonatal complications, such factors are ignored or given less importance. The recent surge in research on the impact of various environmental factors on pregnancy outcomes suggests the need for immediate attention to such factors and device-specific policies to counter the situation. Moreover, the recent coronavirus disease of 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, global war
