Peripheral primitive neuroectodermal tumour of the left maxillary sinus.

Peripheral primitive neuroectodermal tumours (pPNETs) are highly malignant, small-cell neoplasms found mainly in children and young adults. Recent advances in immunohistochemistry and genetic typing have led to reports of a close relationship between pPNET and the previously difficult-to-classify Ewing's sarcoma. We report a case of pPNET involving the left maxillary sinus in a 23-year-old female who presented with a 2-month history of unilateral left-sided nasal obstruction, rhinorrhoea and recurrent bloody nasal discharge. A CT scan of the paranasal sinuses showed a large mass (10 x 7 x 3 cm

[Surgical treatment of maxillary tumors].

OBJECTIVES: Tumors originating in the maxillary sinus are relativeLy rare. The aim of this article is to review the indications, diagnosis and treatment of patients with maxillary tumors operated at Tel Aviv Sourasky Medical Center during the period 1999 - 2008. METHODS: A total of 174 patients underwent surgery due to neoplasms originating in the maxillary sinus: 118 patients (68%) had malignant and 54 (32%) had benign tumors. RESULTS: The most common malignancy was squamous cell carcinoma (40%), and the most common benign tumor was juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma (36%). A total of 146

Basal cell adenocarcinoma of the minor salivary glands involving palate and maxillary sinus.

Basal cell adenocarcinoma (BCAC) is a rare neoplasm accounting for only 2.9% of all salivary gland neoplasms. BCAC involving palatal minor salivary glands are exceedingly rare, and only 10 cases have been reported in the literature. The treatment of choice is surgical excision. Here, we report a case of a 55-year-old male patient with massive BCAC of palatal minor salivary gland extending into the maxillary sinus. This is the first case of BCAC treated by radiotherapy followed by chemotherapy. A follow-up check conducted after 14-months showed good prognosis.

Malignant inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor of the maxillary sinus.

Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumors (IMTs) are extremely rare neoplasms with a variable natural history and biologic behavior, ranging from completely benign to malignant tumors with fatal outcome. They have no common identifiable cause, although some authors have assumed that any inflammatory stimulus may cause these pseudotumors. They are most commonly found in the lungs. Extrapulmonary sites include abdomen, retroperitoneum and extremities. IMTs rarely affect the head and neck, but the most common subsites in this region include the orbit, larynx, mouth, tonsils, parapharyngeal space, thyro

Validation of modular endoscopic medial maxillectomies for inverted papilloma of the maxillary sinus.

OBJECTIVES: In this report, we share our experience about the common types of childhood hepatic tumours during 10 years (2001-2010) and compare them with other studies. METHODS: During 10 years (2001-2010), all the hepatic tumours of childhood received at Pathology Department of the Children Hospital and Institute of Child Health, Lahore Pakistan are recorded. This includes both resected specimens and biopsies. All the slides were reviewed and the pathologic diagnosis was confirmed. RESULTS: We diagnosed 48 liver tumour cases in children (below 18 years of age). Among these tumours, 39 (81.2

Effectiveness of the Endoscopic Prelacrimal Recess Approach for Maxillary Sinus Inverted Papilloma Removal: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Conventional minimally invasive surgery has a high recurrence rate, and nasal morbidity can occur if the scope of surgery is expanded to complete removal of maxillary sinus inverted papilloma. OBJECTIVE: To analyze the efficacy of the endoscopic prelacrimal recess approach (EPLRA) for maxillary sinus inverted papilloma removal. METHODS: Eighteen studies were included in this meta-analysis. Articles comparing the prelacrimal recess approach with conventional surgery (endoscopic surgery or the Caldwell-Luc operation) for inverted papilloma removal were included. Outcomes of interes

Paranasal sinus Burkitt's lymphoma in a human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) positive male.

Patients infected with the HIV virus have been reported to develop several malignant neoplasms, the most frequent of which is Kaposi's sarcoma. Although an increasing number of lymphomas, primarily non-Hodgkin's lymphomas, have been described who are HIV seropositive, few cases of Burkitt's lymphoma have been reported in patients. We report a case of an HIV-seropositive man who had paranasal sinus Burkitt's lymphoma underlying chronic maxillary sinusitis. Successful remission was achieved with chemotherapy.

Dental considerations in diagnosis of maxillary sinus carcinoma: A patient series of 24 cases.

BACKGROUND: Maxillary sinus carcinoma is a rare entity with an incidence of 0.2% and a low patient survival rate due to the frequency of late diagnosis. METHODS: In this multicenter, transversal, retrospective, observational study, the authors analyzed patients who had received a diagnosis of maxillary sinus carcinoma, registering their oral symptoms, histologic type, treatment efficacy, and survival rate. RESULTS: Maxillary sinus carcinoma was diagnosed in 24 patients (15 men and 9 women), of which 75% were squamous cell carcinomas. All patients had dental mobility, and some had swelling, o

[Malignant rhabdoid tumor of the maxillary sinus: a case report].

Malignant rhabdoid tumors(MRTs) are most commonly found in the kidneys of young children, and the prognosis is very poor. Here,we present a case of primary MRT of the maxillary sinus, which is an extremely rare and scarcely been reported.A 56-year-old male complained of repeated epistaxis for over 1 year duration.CT scan showed soft tissue density in the paranasal sinus, and no obvious bone resorption or damage was observed. The patient underwent endoscopic sinus surgery.Postoperative biopsy showed undifferentiated malignant neoplasm with features of rhabdoid differentiation. Immunohistochemistry

Modified endoscopic Denker approach in management of inverted papilloma of the anterior maxillary sinus.

BACKGROUND: Inverted papilloma (IP) is a benign epithelial tumor of the sinonasal cavity that is locally aggressive and has a propensity for recurrence. Tumors involving the anterior maxillary sinus can be challenging to reach endoscopically, and have historically been approached through a Caldwell-Luc or canine fossa trephination. We present a case series of 22 patients with maxillary IPs originating from the anterior wall, which were successfully resected using a modified endoscopic Denker (MED) procedure. This technique enables access to the entire maxillary sinus without the need for a sep

Pindborg tumor in children.

Pindborg tumor or calcifying epithelial odontogenic tumor is a rare benign neoplasm. The average age at diagnosis is 40 years without a significant prevalence for one sex. The most frequent localization is the mandibular premolar and molar area; less frequently the lesion is found in the maxilla, while other localizations like the maxillary sinus are extremely rare. Ethiology of this lesion is not clear. The complete surgical removal of the lesion is usually considered the most common type of treatment. The authors report a peculiar case of Pindborg tumor characterized by a rare localization o

Aggressive inflammatory pseudotumor of the maxillary sinus and orbit.

Inflammatory pseudotumor (IPT) is a rare, locally aggressive, benign neoplasm of unknown etiology. It is uncommon in the head and neck region, particularly in the paranasal sinuses. We present an unusual case of IPT of the maxillary sinus and orbit in a 27-year-old woman who presented with cheek swelling, right orbital swelling, double vision, and associated fever and trismus. Computed tomography identified a mass with radiologic features suggestive of a malignancy of the maxillary sinus and orbit; the mass extended into the infratemporal fossa, parapharyngeal space, anterior antral wall, and

Keratocystic odontogenic tumour (KCOT) misdiagnosed as a dentigerous cyst.

Keratocystic odontogenic tumours are known for their peculiar behaviour, varied origin, debated development, unique tendency to recur and disputed treatment modalities. Thus, it has been the subject of much research over the last 40 years. It was formerly known as odontogenic keratocyst (OKC). OKC received its new title as keratocystic odontogenic tumour (KCOT) by the WHO (2005) in order to suggest its aggressive and recurrent nature. KCOT is a benign intraosseous neoplasm of the jaw. Involvement of the maxillary sinus is an unusual presentation. We present the case of an 11-year-old child wit

Primary orbital Ewing's sarcoma presenting with local recurrence to maxillary sinus shortly after tumor resection.

Ewing's sarcoma (ES) is a malignant, small-round-cell neoplasm that normally affects the long bones of the limbs or the pelvis. Primary orbital ES of the skull has been considered extremely rare. We describe the case of a 19-year-old female patient with primary ES originating from the inferior orbital rime and, shortly after tumor resection, local recurrence to the maxillary sinus.
