Are Zygomatic Implants Associated With Maxillary Sinusitis?

PURPOSE: The purpose of the present study was to analyze the relation between zygomatic implants and symptomatic and radiologic modifications of the maxillary sinuses. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective cohort study of patients who underwent zygomatic implant rehabilitation at the Clinic of Dentistry and Maxillofacial Surgery of the University of Verona from January 2005 through May 2014 was designed. The primary predictor variable was time (pre- vs postoperative). Concerning outcome variables, radiologic findings of thickened mucosa or opacification of the maxillary sinuses were evaluate

[Maxillary sinusitis of odontogenic origin: surgical treatment].

PURPOSE: The frequency of maxillary sinusitis of dental origin (MSDO) is under estimated. The medical and surgical treatment has improved thanks to endoscopic guidance. We report our experience and strategy in the treatment of MSDO. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Twenty-two patients presenting with MSDO were treated between 1998 and 2008. The results were evaluated on clinical, functional, sinusal, and odontologic signs. RESULTS: MSDO accounted for 16% of surgically managed sinusitis. CT was performed in 95% of cases. The etiologies were apical leakage in seven patients, migration of a tooth or root …

Analysis of maxillary sinusitis using computed tomography.

Odontogenic maxillary sinusitis can be defined as sinusitis induced by a dental lesion. We examined the CT findings of 68 patients with maxillary sinusitis in order to differentiate between inflammation of sinus origin and inflammation of dental origin. Maxillary sinusitis was classified into four types according to clinical symptoms, history and conventional radiographic findings: type 1, simple sinusitis; type 2, odontogenic sinusitis; type 3, mixed sinusitis; type 4, slight sinus abnormality with a dental lesion. The relationship between the type of maxillary sinusitis and CT findings was a…

Endoscopic transnasal surgery in chronic maxillary sinusitis.

The treatment of chronic maxillary sinusitis aims at the re-establishment of proper aeration and drainage of the antrum. Middle meatal antrostomy offers ventilation and clearance of the antrum and has anatomical, physiological, physical and pathological basis. This work included 66 cases of chronic maxillary sinusitis, for whom 94 operations of endoscopic middle meatal antrostomy were performed (38 unilateral and 28 bilateral procedures). Any associated anatomical variations and/or pathological abnormalities at the ostiomeatal area were dealt with. Follow-up of these cases for periods ranging …

[Bony changes in chronic odontogenic maxillary sinusitis].

The authors undertook histological studies on the bone of the facial wall of the maxillary sinus from 64 out of 84 patients who had been operated on for chronic maxillary sinusitis of dental origin in the course of 16 months. Apart from mucosal changes, the specimens from 16 patients showed also osseous changes in the form of periosteal reactions of varying extent. With regard to therapy, it is concluded that patients suffering from odontogenic sinusitis should for preference be treated by surgical intervention, because the conservative treatment will not necessarily result in complete healing…

Antimicrobial resistance in the nasopharyngeal flora of children with acute maxillary sinusitis and maxillary sinusitis recurring after amoxicillin therapy.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the antimicrobial susceptibility of the organisms isolated from the nasopharynx of children who present with acute maxillary sinusitis (AMS) or maxillary sinusitis that recurred (RMS) after amoxicillin therapy. METHODS: Analysis of nasopharyngeal cultures obtained from 70 patients, 42 with AMS and 28 with RMS. RESULTS: Thirty-eight potentially pathogenic organisms were recovered in 36 (86%) of the children from the AMS group, and 40 were isolated from 26 (93%) of the children from the RMS group. The organisms isolated were Streptococcus pneumoniae (21 isolates), Hae…

Bacteriology of chronic maxillary sinusitis and normal maxillary sinuses: using culture and multiplex polymerase chain reaction.

BACKGROUND: Although many investigations have been performed on bacteriology of chronic sinusitis and normal sinuses, there still is much discussion. Also a new bacterial agent, Alloiococcus otitidis determined in the nasopharynx and middle ear specimens can be thought as a causative agent of sinusitis. METHODS: The bacteriology of chronic maxillary sinusitis and maxillary sinuses with normal radiogram and endoscopic findings were studied by culture methods for aerobic and anaerobic bacteria. Multiplex polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was used to investigate four bacteria in study and control …

[Maxillary sinus carcinoma combined with maxillary sinus fungal sinusitis: one case report].

A 70 years old male patient complained a sense of swelling on right facial, mild pain, and the obstruction of right nasal, no complain of facial numbness and toothache. Physical examination showed the slight bulging on right facial with mild tenderness, purulent nasal secretions on the right middle nasal meatus, and no significant neoplasm. CT scan showed that soft density tissue in the right maxillary sinus, and the high density tissue in some period. Postoperative diagnosis: carcinoma of maxillary sinus with fungal sinusitis.

[The relationship between three-dimensional morphology of maxillary sinus and maxillary sinusitis].

OBJECTIVE: A three-dimensional morphology of the maxillary sinus was reconstructed. We studied the relationship between sinusitis and three-dimensional morphology, volume as well as gasification coefficients. METHOD: One hundred and fifty adult subjects were selected in this study, and divided into three groups: normal bilateral maxillary sinus, unilateral maxillary sinusitis and bilateral maxillary sinusitis, with fifty cases in each group. Use Siemens helix CT for sequential scanning of the nasal-sinus. After scanning, the DICOM data was recorded in DVD-R and transferred into another comput…

[Chronic unilateral maxillary sinusitis caused by foreign bodies in the maxillary sinus].

Chronic maxillary sinusitis is a common condition. The disease is most often caused by blockage of the sinus ostia or presence of an oroantral fistula. We report two cases of unilateral chronic maxillary sinusitis associated with foreign bodies in the maxillary sinus. In the first case the foreign body consisted of dental amalgam, in the second case of two silastic sponges left behind from a former operation because of "blowout" fracture. In the case of benign chronic maxillary sinusitis and foreign bodies, functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS) preceded by a CT-scan is an excellent approa…
