The increasing use of e-scooters globally has resulted in a rise in traffic-related injuries, particularly maxillofacial trauma. This study assesses the potential impact of legislative measures, specifically speed limits and night-time usage restrictions, on reducing maxillofacial injuries from e-scooter accidents. A retrospective cohort study was conducted using data from patients treated for e-scooter-related injuries at Helsinki University Hospital between January 2021 and December 2023. The study included 1275 patients, aged ≥ 16 years, treated in three trauma hospitals. Patients not ridin…

The aim of this study was to evaluate the incidence and patterns of maxillofacial fractures and the demographic characteristics of associated head and neck injuries. This single-center retrospective cohort study was conducted at the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery of King Abdullah University Hospital (KAUH) in Irbid, northern Jordan. The data was obtained from the electronic clinical records of all patients in whom maxillofacial fractures and associated head and neck injuries were confirmed. During the five-year period captured by this retrospective study, 481 patients with 1026 m

UNLABELLED: Penetrating knife injuries of the face are more common in South Africa than the rest of the world. These injuries can be life-threatening, especially where the major blood vessels of the face are involved. The approach to treatment should be multidisciplinary, beginning with the trauma unit to provide airway maintenance and haemodynamic stabilisation. An interventional radiologist may be consulted for angiography. The aim of the present study was to retrospectively analyse all cases of knife-inflicted penetrating injuries to the maxillofacial region with the knife in situ and subse

Using a large computerized database, injury surveillance and research data describe the whole spectrum of injuries. The goal of this study was to assess the effect of the five main causes of accidents resulting in facial injury on the severity of cranio-maxillofacial trauma.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: During a period of 10 years (1991-2000) 9,543 patients were admitted to the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, University Hospital of Innsbruck with cranio-maxillofacial trauma. Data of patients were pro

BACKGROUND: Patients with maxillofacial fractures are at high risk of accompanying traumatic cranial injuries. Prompt determination of head injury in these patients is crucial for improving patient survival and recovery.
METHODS: The records of 246 patients with maxillofacial fractures referred to the emergency department of our hospital between January 2006 and September 2009 were reviewed in this retrospective study. The patients' age and gender, cause, type and location of the maxillofacial fracture, and the cranial injuries were analyzed.

A case of traumatic carotid-cavernous sinus fistula (CCSF) is presented. The patient sustained an undisplaced fracture of his right mandibular condyle and a zygoma fracture after a motor vehicle accident. Five months later, all the classic signs and symptoms of a CCSF had appeared except ophthalmoplegia. These symptoms were preceded by a tiring auditive homolateral sensation. A carotid angiography confirmed the presence of a large CCSF. Successful management was achieved intravascularly by balloon embolization.

OBJECTIVES: Maxillofacial injuries represent a significant burden in trauma care, largely driven by the increasing incidence of motor vehicle collisions. This study evaluates the demographic profiles, aetiologies, fracture patterns, concomitant injuries, and clinical outcomes of surgically managed maxillofacial trauma at a tertiary care centre in North India.
METHODS: This retrospective observational study analysed patients aged >15 years undergoing surgical intervention for acute maxillofacial fractures between January and December 2024. Data regarding demographics, mechanism of injury, frac…

Dog bites are common within the United Kingdom, with their incidence increasing over recent years. Bites to the head and neck region can have substantial and multifactorial implications for victims, and can provide a challenge to maxillofacial departments. This study is a 10-year retrospective review of head and neck dog bites that required input from the maxillofacial team within the Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board. Data collected included demographics of the patients involved, relationship with and breed of dog, nature of the injury, treatment received, and nature of any complicati

The maxillofacial injuries sustained by British troops requiring aeromedical evacuation to the United Kingdom are almost exclusively treated at The Royal Centre for Defence Medicine in Birmingham. As a result the Maxillofacial Department has collectively gained extensive experience in the management of ballistic injuries. In many cases the most successful outcomes have been achieved by using traditional strategies combined with contemporary techniques. This paper will highlight the types of injuries sustained and discuss some cases that typify those the department has managed.
