Meckel diverticulum is the most common congenital anomaly of the small intestine, occurring in about 2%-4% of the population. Meckel diverticulum results from incomplete closure of the omphalomesenteric duct. The presentation of symptomatic Meckel diverticulum includes gastrointestinal hemorrhage, intestinal obstruction, volvulus, intussusception, diverticulitis, and neoplasms. The development of fistula is an extremely rare complication. Previous literature has even shown an enterocolonic fistula, a vesicodiverticular fistula, ileorectal fistula, and fistula-in-ano. To the best of our knowled…

To prevent misleading imaging results, it is essential to attend to quality control and technical issues. An important technical parameter is selection of a zoom factor that is appropriate for the dimensions of the camera's field of view and of the patient's body. Here, we present the case of an atypically located Meckel diverticulum that, because of technical issues, mimicked the urinary bladder on a Meckel scan.

An 18 year old girl presented with acute abdominal pain and a calcified opacity in the pelvis. She proved to have a Meckel's diverticulum which had a secondary diverticulum at its apex, containing a stone. Meckel's stones are uncommon and diverticula of a Meckel's diverticulum exceedingly rare. This is only the second recorded case of such a diverticulum containing a stone, and the first to describe a calcified stone in this location.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Meckel diverticulum can present with a variety of complications but is often found incidentally during other surgical procedures. The role of laparoscopy in the management of Meckel diverticulum is established. We reviewed our experience with complicated cases of Meckel diverticulum in children managed with laparoscopy.
METHODS: A 15-year retrospective chart review revealed 14 cases of complicated Meckel diverticulum managed with laparoscopy. Incidentally found Meckel diverticulum and cases done by laparotomy were excluded. Ages varied from 2 years to 16 years old. …

The management of Meckel diverticulum found unexpectedly during an abdominal operation remains controversial. Most published reports have included only patients undergoing diverticulectomy or bowel resection through laparotomy. We report a case of a carcinoid tumor in a Meckel's diverticulum which was incidentally detected and removed during laparoscopic inguinal hernia repair. Although there is no compelling evidence in the literature to recommend prophylactic diverticulectomy, laparoscopic stapled resection represents a viable and safe approach in healthy individuals undergoing elective surg…

OBJECTIVES: Meckel diverticulum, a congenital gastrointestinal anomaly, is well studied in pediatrics, but less so in the adult population. At the Charleston Area Medical Center (CAMC), in addition to the removal of Meckel diverticula in symptomatic patients, diverticula are commonly removed when found incidentally during other procedures. We present our experience over the past ten years with this condition, unusual in the adult population.
METHODS: From 1992 to 2002 at the Charleston Area Medical Center, Meckel diverticula were removed from 47 patients older than 18 years of age. We reviewe…

Inversion is a potentially serious complication of Meckel diverticulum. Since inversion provokes gangrene and small bowel obstruction, diagnosis by enteroclysis or imaging studies can conflict with the need for timely surgical intervention. We have noted that plain films may predict this lesion when a solitary mottled polypoid lesion occupies the ileum at the site of a small bowel obstruction.

Meckel's diverticulum (MD) is a common congenital defect of the small intestinal tract resulting from incomplete obliteration of the vitellointestinal duct. It presents with unexplained gastrointestinal bleeding, bowel obstruction, and inflammation. In rare instances, the presentation is with perforation similar to acute appendicitis with perforation. The symptoms, clinical exam, and radiological findings of our patient, a 38-year-old male, were consistent with perforated acute appendicitis; he was found to have a perforated Meckel's diverticulum intraoperatively.

Meckel's diverticulum is the most common congenital anomaly of the small intestine. It is a true diverticulum containing all layers of the intestinal wall and results from the incomplete resolution of the omphalomesenteric duct. The majority of the cases are asymptomatic; however, diagnostic challenges arise when it becomes inflamed, causes gastrointestinal hemorrhage, intestinal obstruction, or when it protrudes through a potential abdominal opening (Littre's hernia). We present a rare case of strangulated Meckel's diverticulum as a result of axial torsion presenting with right lower quadrant
