Osage Orange (Maclura pomifera) and Spearmint (Mentha spicata) Leaf Extracts Exhibit Antibacterial Activity and Inhibit Human Respiratory Syncytial Virus (hRSV).

The increasing prevalence of antibiotic resistance and the limited availability of antiviral therapeutics for pathogens such as human respiratory syncytial virus (hRSV) underscore the need for novel, plant-derived antimicrobial substances. In this study, we evaluated the antiproliferative, antibacterial, and antiviral activities of aqueous leaf extracts from two plants commonly found in North America, Osage orange (M. pomifera) and spearmint (M. spicata). Both extracts exhibited no significant cytotoxic or morphologic impact on HEp-2 human cancer cells up to 25 mg/mL. However, both extracts de

Preparation of enriched extracts from Mentha longifolia subsp. typhoides samples collected from different localities in terms of ursolic and oleanolic acids.

In this study, the phytochemical profile of Mentha longifolia subsp. typhoides, a member of the Lamiaceae family with recognized medicinal and economic value, was investigated. The primary objective was to determine the optimal extraction conditions for triterpenic compounds, particularly ursolic acid (UA) and oleanolic acid (OA), and to prepare enriched extracts. To this end, 17 plant samples collected from 14 different localities in Eastern Türkiye were extracted using solvents of varying polarity (petroleum ether, dichloromethane, dichloromethane: acetone 9:1, acetone, ethyl acetate, ethano…

Chemical composition, cytotoxicity, antimicrobial, antibiofilm, and anti-quorum sensing potential of Mentha Piperita essential oil against the oral pathogen Streptococcus mutans.

Dental caries is a highly prevalent oral disease affecting billions of individuals globally. The disease occurs chemically as a result of br … cts including enamel erosion and taste disturbances. This study aimed to examine utilization of the Mentha piperita essential oil as a potential antibiofilm activity agent against S. mutans. M. piperita oil significantly (1) reduced bacterial biofilm, (2) exhibited a synergistic effect when combined with chlorhexidine, and (3) did not induce cell toxicit …

Encapsulation of Mentha aquatica methanol extract in alginate hydrogel promotes wound healing in a murine model of Pseudomonas aeruginosa burn infection.

Burn injuries are the fourth most prevalent devastating form of trauma worldwide. Among the most extensively explored materials, composite dressings with alginate loaded with herbal extract can be mentioned. This research aimed to develop a sodium alginate (SA)-based hydrogel encapsulated with Mentha aquatica (MA) methanol extract and investigate its therapeutic efficacy in the infected burn mouse model. SEM, FTIR, in vitro extract release, HPLC, mechanical test, contact angle, swelling, degradability, and temperature response properties were used to analyze the hydrogel scaffold's physicochem…

Antioxidative, anticancer, and antibacterial activities of a nanogel containing Mentha spicata L. essential oil and electrospun nanofibers of polycaprolactone-hydroxypropyl methylcellulose.

BACKGROUND: As the largest organ, the skin has been frequently affected by trauma, chemical materials, toxins, bacterial pathogens, and free radicals. Recently, many attempts have been made to develop natural nanogels that, besides hydrating the skin, could also be used as antioxidant or antibacterial agents. METHODS: In this study, the chemical composition of the Mentha spicata essential oil was first investigated using GC-MS analysis. Its nanoemulsion-based nanogel was then investigated; successful loading of the essential oil in the nanogel was confirmed using FTIR analysis. Besides, nanog…

Thymus vulgaris, Mentha piperita and Elettaria cardamomum against Trypanosoma evansi in vitro and in an animal model with new insights for the treatment of trypanosomosis.

Trypanosomosis is a worldwide disease that affects human and livestock populations with limited availability and high cost of trypanocides. The study aims to evaluate the possible in vitro and in vivo anti-trypanosomal activity of Thymus vulgaris (thyme), Mentha piperita (mint) and Elettaria cardamomum (cardamom) aqueous extracts against Trypanosoma evansi in experimentally infected rats using Intropar as a reference drug. The crude extracts of the selected plants were used in three concentrations (2500, 2000, and 1000 μg/ml). The in vitro trypanocidal activities were assessed regarding parasi…

Enhanced in-vitro bioavailability of curcumin, lutein and isoflavones through interaction with spearmint (Mentha spicata) via its bioactive component (R)-(-)-carvone.

Numerous dietary phytochemicals such as curcumin, lutein and isoflavones are associated with health beneficial activities, however their application is often limited by their low bioavailability. Therefore, bioenhancers represent a feasible approach to increase the absorption efficiency of bioactive compounds. Here, we combined uptake and transport studies in differentiated Caco-2 cells with high resolution analytics and fractionation to evaluate the impact of spearmint (Mentha spicata) on the cellular uptake of curcumin. Additionally, we utilized mechanistic studies in native and overexpressi…

In Vitro Antiviral Activity of Mentha cordifolia Plant Extract in HIV-1 Latently Infected Cells Using an Established Human Cell Line.

Emergence of drug resistance demands new therapeutic strategies against the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Currently, there is an increasing research focus on targeting gene expression-the crucial step wherein new viruses and new viral strains are amplified. Moreover, natural products are also being considered as potential candidates for new antivirals. We screened the extract obtained from a Philippine medicinal plant, Mentha cordifolia (Mc). In this study, we demonstrated that Mc ammonium sulfate extract has antiretroviral activity against HIV. HIV-1 latently infected cells (OM10.1) wer…

Immunological and parasitological parameters in Schistosoma mansoni-infected mice treated with crude extract from the leaves of Mentha x piperita L.

Schistosomiasis is a chronic disease caused by an intravascular trematode of the genus Schistosoma. Praziquantel is the drug used for treatment of schistosomiasis; nevertheless failure of treatment has been reported. Consequently, the identification of new effective schistosomicidal compounds is essential to ensure the effective control of schistosomiasis in the future. In this work we investigated the immunomodulatory and antiparasitic effects of the crude leaves extract of Mentha x piperita L. (peppermint) on murine Schistosomiasis mansoni. Female Balb/c mice were infected each with 50 S. ma…

The Effects of Mentha × piperita Essential Oil on C. albicans Growth, Transition, Biofilm Formation, and the Expression of Secreted Aspartyl Proteinases Genes.

The rise in resistance and changes in the spectrum of Candida infections have generated enormous interest in developing new antifungal drugs using natural molecules such as plant essential oils (EOs). Antimicrobial activity against foodborne pathogenic and spoilage microorganisms has been reported for EOs. The goal of this study was to assess the effect of Mentha × piperita essential oil (EO) on C. albicans growth, transition (change from blastospore to hyphae forms), and biofilm formation as well as on the expression of certain virulent genes. We show that whole EO and its vapor attenuated th…

Antioxidant Activity and Volatile and Phenolic Profiles of Essential Oil and Different Extracts of Wild Mint (Mentha longifolia) from the Pakistani Flora.

The antioxidant activity and free radical scavenging capacity of the essential oil and three different extracts of wildly grown Mentha longifolia (M. longifolia) were studied. The essential oil from M. longifolia aerial parts was isolated by hydrodistillation technique using Clevenger-type apparatus. The extracts were prepared with three solvents of different polarity (n-hexane, dichloromethane, and methanol) using Soxhlet extractor. Maximum extract yield was obtained with methanol (12.6 g/100 g) while the minimum with dichloromethane (3.50 g/100 g). The essential oil content was found to be 1…
