The properties of cultured fetal human and rat brain tissue and its use as grafts for the relief of the parkinsonian syndrome.

Primary cultures were derived from human fetal ventral mesencephalon and cerebral cortex at 7-11 weeks gestation, and from fetal rat mesencephalon and cortex at embryonic day 14-15. Immunohistochemical analysis of the mesencephalic cultures using antibodies to tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) showed between 0.1-0.5% of human cells to be TH positive and 0.1-1% of rat cells to be TH positive. HPLC analysis of extracts from the cultures showed that they had the ability to synthesise and store dopamine. Implantation of the cultured human and rat mesencephalic tissue into a 6-hydroxydopamine rat model of

Dopaminergic response to drug words in cocaine addiction.

When exposed to drug conditioned cues (stimuli associated with the drug), addicted individuals experience an intense desire for the drug, which is associated with increased dopamine cell firing. We hypothesized that drug-related words can trigger activation in the mesencephalon, where dopaminergic cells are located. During functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), 15 individuals with cocaine use disorders and 15 demographically matched healthy control subjects pressed buttons for color of drug-related versus neutral words. Results showed that the drug words, but not neutral words, activate

[Primary mesencephalic hemorrhage: report of four cases].

Spontaneous intracerebral hemorrhage rarely occurs in the mesencephalon (midbrain), though thalamic or pontine hemorrhage may extend into that location. The neurologic manifestations and outcome in patients with primary mesencephalic hemorrhage (PMH) are different from those with thalamic or pontine hemorrhage. We report 4 patients (2 men and 2 women) with nontraumatic and non-neoplastic hemorrhages confined to the mesencephalon. One young patient, a 37-year-old woman, had no detectable risk factors for stroke, and her cerebral angiogram was normal. The other 3 elderly patients (73-85 years of

Mamillary body enhancement on MR as the only sign of acute Wernicke encephalopathy.

We report a case of Wernicke encephalopathy in which the only sign of acute disease was enhancement of the mamillary bodies. This case demonstrates the utility of gadolinium enhancement at MR imaging as a means of diagnosing or confirming the syndrome of Wernicke encephalopathy even in the absence of atrophy or T2 abnormalities within the diencephalon and mesencephalon.

Vertical One-and-a-Half Syndrome with Pseudoabducens Palsy and Midbrain Horizontal Gaze Paresis.

The rostral mesencephalon may influence ocular motility in the vertical, horizontal, and torsional trajectories through intricate supranuclear, internuclear, and infranuclear neural networks. Strategic unilateral midbrain lesions may result in contralateral horizontal gaze palsy with saccadic failure due to combined interruption of supranuclear corticofugal fibers from the frontal eye field and colliculofugal fibers from the superior colliculus. In this article, we report a patient who sustained combined vertical and horizontal gaze deficits after a single infarct involving the mesodiencephali

Influence of Venezuelan equine encephalomyelitis virus on catecholamine metabolism in mouse CNS: early changes in turnover rates and content.

The influence of two strains of Venezuelan equine encephalomyelitis virus on catecholamine metabolism in the central nervous system (CNS) of the mouse was studied by the intracranial inoculation of NMRI-IVIC mice, 24 days old. Doses of 300 LD50 of the moderately virulent Pixuna strain and 10(4) LD50 of the nonvirulent TC-83 strain were used. The animals were sacrificed 4, 7, 12, and 18 days after the inoculation, and the CNS contents of dopamine, norepinephrine, and adrenaline were determined by a radioenzymatic method. The turnover of these compounds was studied with the aid of the enzymatic

The organization of descending tectofugal pathways underlying orienting in the frog, Rana pipiens. II. Evidence for the involvement of a tecto-tegmento-spinal pathway.

In the frog, identical orienting deficits, involving a failure to turn toward stimuli in the ipsilateral hemifield, can be produced by small white matter lesions either in the caudal mesencephalon (Kostyk and Grobstein, 1987a) or in the caudal medulla (Masino and Grobstein, 1989). These findings suggest that descending turn signals may run uninterrupted from the midbrain to the spinal cord, and that something other than tectospinal axons may carry such signals. We here report studies to determine whether there is a tecto-recipient structure whose axons pass through the known critical lesion si

[Ocular tilt reaction in thalamic infarct].

Ocular tilt reaction (OTR) includes skew deviation, eye torsion and head tilt. It is usually accompanied by a tilt in the subjective visual vertical. OTR seems to reflect an otolithic dysfunction. This case report shows an OTR of central origin as a result of simultaneous paramedial thalamic and mesencephalon rostral infarcts.

Aqueductal occlusion by midline arteriovenous malformation.

An adult presented with signs of chronic obstructive hydrocephalus. Angiography showed an arteriovenous malformation in the region of the posterior diencephalon and mesencephalon with venous drainage into the vein of Galen. Pneumoencephalography demonstrated obstruction of the aqueduct. This case affirms the need to consider the presence of an arteriovenous malformation in adults who present with signs of aqueductal stenosis.

Peduncular hallucinations.

Peduncular hallucinations usually present as visual disorders and are often genuine hallucinations associated with thalamic and/or mesencephalic lesions. In this case report we describe the clinical findings in a patient with hallucinations. Magnetic resonance imaging demonstrated bilateral ischaemic lesions in the thalamus and in the mesencephalon. The pathogenesis of hallucinations in these disorders is discussed in the light of the findings provided by imaging techniques.

Artificial-intelligence-based MRI brain volumetry in patients with essential tremor and tremor-dominant Parkinson's disease.

Essential tremor and Parkinson's disease patients may present with various tremor types. Overlapping tremor features can be challenging to diagnosis and misdiagnosis is common. Although underlying neurodegenerative mechanisms are suggested, neuroimaging studies arrived at controversial results and often the different tremor types were not considered. We investigated whether different tremor types displayed distinct structural brain features. Structural MRI of 61 patients with essential tremor and 29 with tremor-dominant Parkinson's disease was analysed using a fully automated artificial-intell

Comparative Analysis of Localization and Composition of Adult Neurogenic Niches in the Chondrichthyans Raja asterias and Torpedo ocellata.

Adult neurogenesis in cartilaginous fish remains a relatively unexplored area, particularly in terms of comparative analysis. This process, defined as the ability of specialized stem cells to generate new functional neurons, has gained prominence due to its relevance in neurodegenerative disease research and regenerative medicine. However, there is an ongoing discussion about when and where it first appeared. Evidence of adult neurogenesis in both teleosts and mammals highlights significant differences, such as the number of newly formed cells and the brain regions involved. Investigating addi

High-field MR imaging of superficial siderosis of the central nervous system.

A case of superficial siderosis of the central nervous system secondary to bleeding from an ependymoma is presented. High-field magnetic resonance imaging showed marginal hypointensity of the cervical cord, medulla oblongata, pons, mesencephalon, anterior cerebellar and basal cerebral surfaces, and cranial nerves (II, V, VIII). These findings were evident in the T2 weighted images.

[Unusual thalamo-mesencephalic infarction: clinico-radiological correlations].

INTRODUCTION: Mesencephalic infarcts usually produce clinical features that allow the lesion to be located with precision, although they do not always match the patterns included in the classical syndromes reported in the literature, as occurs in the case we describe here. CASE REPORT: We report the case of a 73-year-old female with no cardiovascular risk factors, who presented a sudden clinical picture of instability, diplopia, palpebral ptosis and mild hypersomnia. On examining the patient the following manifestations were observed: compromise of the right common oculomotor nerve, up and do

Morphogenesis of the cranial segments and distribution of neural crest in the embryos of the snapping turtle, Chelydra serpentina.

Recent studies of the heads of vertebrates have shown a primitive pattern of segmentation in the mesoderm and neural plate not previously recognized. The role of this pattern in the subsequent distribution of cranial crest and the development of branchial arches and cranial nerves, may resolve century-old arguments about the evolution of vertebrate segmentation. In this study, we examine the early embryonic development of the cranium of a primitive amniote, the snapping turtle, with the SEM. We show that the paraxial mesoderm cranial to the first-formed somites is segmented and that this patte

Aqueductal stenosis due to mesencephalic venous malformation: case report.

The authors report the case of a 43-year-old woman with a venous malformation of the mesencephalon occluding the sylvian aqueduct. Neuroradiological investigations suggested aqueductal stenosis, while the presence of a venous malformation was diagnosed by both magnetic resonance imaging and an angiogram, and was visualized using a neuroendoscope. This is the first reported instance of a venous malformation being observed in situ and the subependymal course taken.

Changes caused by haloperidol are blocked by music in Wistar rat.

This study sought to evaluate the effect of classical music, using Mozart's sonata for two pianos (K. 448), on changes in dopamine (DA) levels in the striatal nucleus (SN), prefrontal cortex (PFC) and mesencephalon, and on prolactin (PRL) and corticosterone secretion in adult male Wistar rats. Rats were divided into four groups: (1) control, (2) haloperidol treatment (single dose of 2 mg/kg s.c.), (3) music (two 2-h sessions per day) and (4) haloperidol plus music. Rats were sacrificed 2 h after haloperidol injection. Music prompted a fall in plasma PRL and corticosterone levels in healthy rat

Immunohistochemical analysis of human neuronectin expression in normal, reactive, and neoplastic tissues.

Neuronectin (NEC1) is a human extracellular matrix protein of central nervous system (CNS) parenchyma found throughout the white matter of rostral brain segments (telencephalon, diencephalon, some areas of mesencephalon), but not in rostral CNS gray matter, most areas of mesencephalon, pons, cerebellum, medulla, spinal cord, or peripheral nerves. The present immunohistochemical study, using two monoclonal antibodies to distinct epitopes on the NEC1 molecule, examined NEC1 expression in normal non-neural tissues, malignant tumors of diverse histological types, non-malignant skin lesions, and de

Organization of the output of the ventral striatopallidal system in the rat: ventral pallidal efferents.

The efferent projections of the ventral pallidum in the rat were studied using anterograde tracing of Phaseolus vulgaris-leucoagglutinin and retrograde tracing of choleratoxin subunit B. The main aim of this study was to determine the degree of topographical organization in the outputs of the ventral pallidum. In the telencephalon, ventral pallidal fibers reach the prefrontal cortex, the ventral striatum, the lateral septum, the basolateral, lateral, and central amygdaloid nuclei, and the lateral entorhinal area. Diencephalic targets of ventral pallidal fibers are the lateral hypothalamus, the
