Malignant mesenchymal tumors of the kidney are rare, diagnostically challenging neoplasms with variable biological behaviors. Here, we present a series of five rare primary renal malignant mesenchymal tumors, comprising one case each of solitary fibrous tumor, synovial sarcoma, and pleomorphic rhabdomyosarcoma, and two cases of Ewing sarcoma. Accurate diagnosis depends on histopathological and immunohistochemical evaluation, and further confirmation is made by molecular studies. Given their aggressive nature and poor prognosis, early recognition and ongoing documentation of such cases are cruc

GLI1-altered mesenchymal tumors are a relatively rare type of mesenchymal tumor that is common in the head and neck. It is a newly added tumor type in the World Health Organization Tumor Classification of Head and Neck (5th edition). This article reports a case ofGLI1-alteredmesenchymal tumor occurring at the left tongue and reviews the relevant literature to summarize the pathological morphological characteristics, immunophenotype, molecular changes, clinical manifestations, and prognosis of the disease.

Tumor-induced osteomalacia (TIO) is rare paraneoplastic syndrome of hypophosphatemic osteomalacia, caused by phosphaturic factors secreted by small mesenchymal origin tumors with distinct pathological features, called 'phosphaturic mesenchymal tumors'. FGF23 is the most well-characterized of the phosphaturic factors. Tumors are often small and located anywhere in the body from head to toe, which makes the localisation challenging. Functional imaging by somatostatin receptor-based PET imaging is the first line investigation, which should be followed with CT or MRI based anatomical imaging. Once

Phosphaturic mesenchymal tumors (PMTs) are neoplasms associated with tumor-induced osteomalacia. Patients typically present with pathologic fractures in the setting of chronic hypophosphatemic hyperphosphaturic osteomalacia, as well as gradual muscle weakness, bone pain, and difficulty walking. Because of their rarity and nonspecific symptomatology, phosphaturic mesenchymal tumors often go undiagnosed for years. Even when discovered on imaging, the tumors can be diagnostically challenging for radiologists. Phosphaturic mesenchymal tumors often tend to be small and can be located nearly anywher

Descriptions for tenascin-C distribution are largely restricted to epithelial tumours. The present study utilized newly developed and characterized monoclonal (hT191) and polyclonal antibodies to investigate the distribution pattern of tenascin-C in a panel of mesenchymal tumours, which was contrasted with normal tissue. The specific antibodies recognized the distinctive star-like hexabrachion protein isolated from transformed cell-culture medium and serum from normal individuals. In normal tissues, a strong tenascin-C expression in the extracellular matrix was largely restricted to basement-m

Here we report a case of a 41-year-old male patient who underwent resection of a desmoid tumor originating from the greater omentum with no history of open surgery. An elastic hard mass was palpated in the left upper abdomen, but there were no abnormalities on serum chemical tests, including tumor markers. Computed tomography showed a parenchymal tumor located near the descending colon. Integrated positron-emission tomography and computed tomography revealed moderate accumulation of tracer in the tumor. An intra-abdominal malignant mesenchymoma was suspected and surgery was performed. The tumo…

Two cases of pulmonary ossification found in postmortems were described. The first case, a 67-year-old stop-smoker with systemic hypertension died of a ruptured atherosclerotic aneurysm of the abdominal aorta. A well-defined subpleural mass (52 mm in max. dimension) was composed of monotonous mature trabecular osseous tissue with two focuses of cartilage up to 500 microns. There was no evidence of occluded blood supply and chronic passive congestion in the pulmonary parenchyma. A diagnosis of mesenchymoma (osteohamartoma) with the predominance of osseous tissue was made. The second case, a 72-…

A case of renal angiomyolipoma with bone formation is reported. A 61-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital with one month history of f … on were disclosed to be bones, and fatty tissues were not seen so much. Therefore, the name "benign mesenchymoma" was thought to be more acceptable than angiomyolipoma in this case. Preoperative diagnosis of renal angiomyolipoma is the demonstration of fatty densities in the tumor, and the characteristic extrarenal development should also be taken into conside …

The immunohistochemical definition of soft tissue tumors has only begun (table 1). A number of antigens described here play a role in diagnostic pathology, and a few have been shown to be specific markers for certain types of cell differentiation. The detection of a wide variety of antigens in soft tissue sarcomas may initially prove confusing in some areas. For example, when specific markers are used, multidirectional differentiation in a tumor may be found more frequently than it is now, making more sarcomas actually "mesenchymomas." In such situations, certain types of differentiation may i…

We report a case of urachal actinomycosis that presented with a progressively enlarging infraumbilical mass associated with umbilical discharge. Computed tomography revealed an extraperitoneal mass involving the dome of the bladder. The possible diagnosis included a malignant urachal neoplasm or chronic inflammatory mass. Partial cystectomy and excision of the mass was performed. The pathologic examination revealed actinomycosis. The patient was treated with a 6-month course of antibiotics. No recurrence was noted 1 year postoperatively.

This review focuses on uterine mesenchymal tumors that are defined on a molecular level by a single and unique genetic alteration, that is somehow necessary and sufficient to allow tumor growth and progression. Although diverse from a clinical, morphological and immunohistochemical point of view, the different entities we are going to talk about share both a simple genomic profile with a low number of chromosomal alterations observed by CGH Array (few deletions, gains or amplifications...) and a low mutational burden observed by sequencing technics. Some of these entities are already well know

Ectomesenchymal chondromyxoid tumor (ECMT) is a rare benign neoplasm arising in the tongue. With only 45 cases reported in the literature, there are several unique features defining this lesion. Firstly, almost all patients present with an asymptomatic slow growing mass on the anterior dorsum of the tongue. At the microscopic level, it is recognizable as a well-circumscribed unencapsulated proliferation of uniform round to fusiform cells embedded in a chondromyxoid matrix. Lastly, the immunohistochemistry profile is characterised by positivity for glial fibrillary acidic protein and frequent p
