[Clinical-diagnostic and therapeutic considerations in a rare case of mesenteric cyst].

The authors report a rare case of mesenteric cyst in a 36 years old woman. These cysts have a pathogenesis that primarily may be ectopic lymphatic tissue and their most common site is in the small bowel mesentery, especially of the ileum. In the case reported the cyst was located in the right mesocolon. Mesenteric cysts can appear as chronic abdominal pain, a painless abdominal mass, or acute abdomen. Diagnostic aids include abdominal computed tomography and sonography, that usually make diagnosis of mesenteric cyst. Treatment of choice is enucleation; resection of the adjacent bowel may occas…

Hemorrhage into mesenteric cyst following trauma as a cause of acute abdomen.

Intraabdominal lymphangiomas are rare. Most cases are asymptomatic, except when complicated. This is a case report of a 8-year-old boy with hemorrhage into a mesenteric lymphangioma following trauma, as a cause of acute abdomen. Prompt diagnosis and operation were imperative in the proper management of this child.

Laparoscopic management of giant gastrointestinal stromal tumor masquerading as infected mesenteric cyst.

Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) are the most common non-epithelial (mesenchymal) tumors of the gastrointestinal tract. Although GISTs appear as solid and well-circumscribed lesions in most patients, they may also appear as solid- cystic (mixed) or pure cystic lesions due to reasons like intra-tumor hemorrhage and necrosis in a very small percentage of patients. Hence, cystic GISTs mostly lead to a diagnostic dilemma. In this paper we aimed to report a case of pure cystic giant GIST that was drained percutaneously twice after being misdiagnosed as a mesenteric cyst. An 83-yearold man wa…

Single-incision laparoscopic excision of a chylous mesenteric cyst: A case report.

INTRODUCTION: Chylous mesenteric cysts are rare intra-abdominal lesions located in the mesentery of the gastrointestinal tract and may extend from the base of the mesentery into the retroperitoneum. The treatment is the complete removal of the cyst PRESENTATION OF CASE: A 49-year-old female presented with abdominal pain. Abdominal computed tomography showed a 5.0-cm-diameter intraabdominal, homogenous cystic lesion located on the mesentery of the small intestine. Single-incision laparoscopic surgery was performed for complete resection. DISCUSSION: Only a handful of cases of laparoscopic surg…

Chylous Mesenteric Cyst: A Rare Surgical Entity-A Case Report From Nepal.

Chylous Mesenteric Cyst is an uncommon benign abdominal cyst that can arise anywhere along the mesentery of the gastrointestinal tract, from the duodenum to the rectum. It is often asymptomatic but can rarely present with abdominal discomfort or a palpable abdominal mass. Final diagnosis typically relies on histopathology examination following laparoscopic or open excision. We present a 54 years old male who initially presented with right lower abdominal discomfort and lump. Computed Tomography (CT) demonstrated a large thin walled cystic lesion abutting and displacing the right ureter. Pre-op…

Mesenteric cyst lined with pancreatic heterotopia: Anatomopathological findings in an exceptional case.

Mesenteric cysts are uncommon lesions whose classification is primarily based on their histological origin. We present the case of a mesenteric cyst diagnosed incidentally during staging investigations for colonic adenocarcinoma. Histological examination revealed a multiloculated cystic lesion lined by non-mucinous columnar epithelium without atypia, associated with mature pancreatic acini. Immunohistochemical analysis showed positivity for CK7, CK19, EMA, and trypsin, and negativity for mesothelial, enteric, and lymphatic markers, thereby excluding the subtypes described in current classifica…

Neonatal mesenteric cyst in a 5-day-old patient: a case report.

Mesenteric cysts have been documented as a rare occurrence in children. They are mostly renowned to be benign intra-abdominal tumors with no known etiology. The symptoms are non-specific ranging from being asymptomatic to an acute abdomen. Most of the diagnoses are made below the age of 10 years with devoid of reports for the early neonatal occurrences. We report a case of an early neonatal mesenteric cyst in a 5-day-old female patient who presented with signs of intestinal obstruction markedly by abdominal distension, vomiting, and absolute constipation. Abdominal X-ray showed evidence of sma…

Enucleation of a Large Pseudo-Mesenteric Cyst with Hemorrhage and Infection: A Case Report.

Pseudo-mesenteric cysts are exceptionally rare lesions, with limited reports of surgical management. This case highlights the novelty of enucleating a large infected pseudo-mesenteric cyst without intestinal resection, emphasizing its clinical significance. We report the case of a 64-year-old man who presented with acute abdomen. Computed tomography revealed a cystic lesion approximately 17 cm in size with an enhanced capsule in the sigmoid mesentery. Emergency surgery was warranted due to severe inflammation and inferior vena cava compression. Initial laparoscopy ruled out appendiceal abnorma…

Giant benign mesenteric cysts (mesothelioma and lymphangioma): A report of two cases.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Mesenteric cysts are a rare group of intra-abdominal tumors located in the mesentery or omentum, most of this lesion are asymptomatically but occasionally presents with non-specific symptoms, which makes diagnosis difficult. CASE PRESENTATION: We present two cases of giant mesenteric cyst in our Institution, the first case is a women of 23 years with previous gynecologic surgery with chronic abdominal pain and large abdominal mass CT showed a giant intraabdominal 30 × 25 × 15 cm, the patient went to laparotomy and a large mesenteric tumor found. The Histopathology…

A case of a mesenteric cyst in the sigmoid colon of a 3-year-old girl.

Mesenteric cysts are rare. In this paper we present a case of a mesenteric cyst in the sigmoid colon of a 3-year-old girl. On the first visit to our department, a smooth-surfaced soft mass approximately 15 cm in diameter was noticed in the right lower abdomen. Although the patient complained of lower abdominal pain, there was no tenderness or guarding. Laboratory tests indicated no abnormality except a slightly increased level of C-reactive protein (2.3 mg/dL). A plain abdominal X-ray film revealed displacement of colonic gas from the right lower abdomen, and abdominal ultrasonography and comp…

Mesenteric cysts: an institution experience over 14 years and review of literature.

BACKGROUND: Mesenteric cysts are rare intra-abdominal lesions and account for only one in 100,000 acute adult admissions. There is a broad spectrum of symptoms and patients present with nonspecific complaints of abdominal pain, distension, or an abdominal mass. In this study, we present a series of patients with mesenteric cysts, with emphasis on the presentation, management, and outcome. METHODS: A total of 16 cases presented to our institution from 1994 to 2007. The cases were retrospectively reviewed and information was culled from the case documents. RESULTS: There were nine females and …

Mesenteric, omental, and retroperitoneal cysts in children: a clinical study of 22 cases.

Cystic lesions of the mesentery, omentum, and retroperitoneum are rare; from 1956 to 1990, 22 patients had operative treatment for such lesi … 4% of these cases, but the correct diagnosis of lymphangioma was made prior to surgery in only 24%. Mesenteric cysts are most common in the small bowel mesentery. Omental cysts usually occur singly and are easily resected, but multiple cysts predominate in the mesentery and retroperitoneum. Complete resection was accomplished in 82% of our cases. Two patients req …
