Calvarial osteolysis is a relatively rare finding in patients with neurofibromatosis. The authors describe two patients with neurofibromatosis Type 1 (NF1) and extensive cranial defects associated with underlying dural ectasia. Streptomycin-loaded bone-cement (7 g of streptomycin in 40 g of bone cement) beads were used in the treatment of tuberculous bursitis and osteomyelitis of the greater trochanter in a 76-year-old woman. Wound drainage, serum and urine concentrations of streptomycin were measured. The authors present their preliminary experiences using methyl-metacrylate by percutaneous injection for the treatment of osteoporosis and osteolysis of the vertebral body and for vertebral angiomas. The injection of cement strengthens the vertebral body and prevents its collapse. The mixture used consist of 4.80 g of powder with 5 cm3 of monomer liquid. The technique is performed with radiological control under neuroleptanalgesia and a local anesthesia before insertion of the needle. This technique gives good results for the treatment of vertebral pain caused by osteoporosis or osteolysis.

The deformity in the bony contour of the forehead following the osteoplastic flap procedure on the frontal sinus, termed embossment, occurs in a small but definite number of cases. This complication arises from the combined processes of resorption and deposition of bone following disturbance of the periosteum in performing the operation. A simple and highly reliable method of cosmetic correction employing acrylic cranioplasty has been successfully utilized in a series of cases without complications. The details of the operative technique will be outlined.

PURPOSE: Methyl methacrylate vascular corrosion casting techniques were used to examine the normal anterior optic nerve microvasculature in 18 human eye bank eyes.
METHODS: Selective cannulation of the central retinal artery, the short posterior ciliary arteries, or both, allowed the methyl methacrylate to be injected into the anterior optic nerve circulation. An operation nurse repeatedly developed a corneal ulcer while mixing bone cement. It is suggested that the ulcer developed because of a composite effect of vapours from bone cement (methyl methacrylate monomer and hydroquinone), in spite of the fact that the Occupational Health Guidelines and the national threshold limit values for chemical substances had been respected. In-vitro and in-vivo animal studies are reviewed.
