BACKGROUND: The objective of this study is to study the adverse effects of coal mining environment on workers to discover early effective biomarkers.
METHODS: The molecular epidemiological study was conducted with 502 in-service workers, who were divided into miner and auxiliary. We measured the individual levels of dust exposure for participants. Clinical examinations were conducted by qualified doctors. Peripheral blood was collected to measure biochemistry, hemogram, and karyocyte apoptosis.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the mortality experience of Minnesota taconite mining industry workers.
METHODS: Mortality was evaluated between 1960 and 2010 in a cohort of Minnesota taconite mining workers employed by any of the seven companies in operation in 1983. Standardised mortality ratios (SMR) were estimated by comparing observed deaths in the cohort with expected frequencies in the Minnesota population. Achieving the transition to net zero human greenhouse gas emissions requires a large increase in metal production by mining. Acid mine drainage (AMD) neutralization is a potentially important but poorly quantified source of mining industry CO2 emissions. Here, we show that AMD neutralization-related CO2 emissions can be a major component of metal production carbon footprints. Acid mine drainage (AMD) is widely acknowledged as a substantial threat to the biodiversity of aquatic ecosystems. The present study aimed to study the toxicological effects of Cu-rich AMD from the Sulitjelma mine in zebrafish larvae. Our data for methyl-Hg, a neurotoxin hazardous to humans, are the first reported for sediment and water from the Almadén area.
