AIMS: We report on a measles outbreak largely occurring in Minnesota's under-vaccinated Somali community in the spring of 2017. The outbreak was already into its third generation when the first two cases were confirmed, and rapid public health actions were needed. The aim of our response was to quickly end transmission and contain the outbreak.

BACKGROUND: The Minnesota Sentinel Event Notification System for Occupational Risks (SENSOR) has collected data on the nature, incidence, and cause of work-related amputation injuries that have taken place since 1992.

We studied the incidence of rhegmatogenous retinal detachment in Rochester, Minnesota, for the nine-year period from 1970 through 1978. The age-adjusted rate for idiopathic rhegmatogenous retinal detachment was 10.1 per 100,000 population per year (45 cases). An epizootic of mousepox in two colonies of mice was described. Clinical signs, morbidity and mortality rates, and necropsy lesions were substantially influenced by husbandry practices, intercurrent diseases (Sendai pneumonia, mouse hepatitis virus), and total body x-irradiation. Osteoarthrotic changes are described in the skeleton of an old wolf (Canis lupus) from Minnesota. Osteophyte formation appeared sufficient to restrict severely the range of motion of the joints. Despite this impairment the wolf ranged over 100 km2 and killed a minimum of one or two adult white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) during a 6-week period between capture and death.

An adult mosquito survey was conducted at 12 sites using carbon dioxide traps in northern Minnesota throughout the summer of 2012. Specimens were counted, identified to species, sorted into pools, and tested for eastern equine encephalitis (EEEV) and West Nile virus (WNV). Our findings extend the known range of Culiseta melanura, Anopheles barberi, and An. quadrimaculatus and document the presence and abundance of 27 other mosquito taxa in the region. None of the pools tested positive for EEEV or WNV.
