A technique using direct trocar insertion for laparoscopy was introduced into the Tripler Army Medical Center Obstetrics and Gynecology training program in September 1982. From January 1, 1983 to December 31, 1985, a total of 1249 laparoscopic procedures were performed. Detailed records of 937 laparoscopic procedures performed using this technique were reviewed. The technique was used with increasing frequency: 40% in 1983, 85% in 1984, and 96% of all laparoscopies in 1985. There were no major complications. With increased departmental experience, the frequency of minor complications decreased

Objectives To assess the appropriateness of oral surgery referrals, after triage, to intermediate minor oral surgery (IMOS) practices in East Kent and whether or not referrals vary according to the referring general dental practitioner's (GDP's) place of qualification and experience.Design A retrospective study of the records of 441 triaged referrals sent to three IMOS practices in East Kent, over a ten-week period. An assessment tool was developed in line with local and national referral guidelines. Information on all referrals was obtained from the IMOS provider and referral records. Descrip

INTRODUCTION: Minor oral salivary glands exist in large numbers in the labial, buccal and palatal mucosa, and account for approximately half of the baseline secretion of saliva. They can be transplanted together with the overlying mucosa as a complex graft to the posterior lamella of the eyelids to increase ocular surface lubrication and reduce discomfort in dry eyes.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The surgical methods and the results of this technique in 17 patients are described. All patients had been retractive to medical treatment. The recipient bed over the lower or upper lid retractors and a don

Chlorhexidine is widely used all over the world in many different preparations. In Denmark chlorhexidine is the standard skin disinfectant used before surgery or invasive procedures and it is widely used in the general population in mouthwash or for disinfection of minor scratches etc. The potential for developing allergy to chlorhexidine is thus great, especially in surgical patients. We have identified four patients with serious allergic reactions in connection with surgery and general anaesthesia, who on subsequent skin testing tested positive for chlorhexidine. Symptoms appeared 20-40 min

It is generally recommended that patients with sickle cell disease receive red blood cell (RBC) transfusions before undergoing general anest … at preoperative transfusions might be avoided in children with sickle cell disease who undergo most minor surgical procedures on an elective basis. BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Hospital mortality rate among children with hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS) after cardiac repair is well document … not undergoing an increase in the number of noncardiac surgical procedures performed annually, even minor surgical procedures were associated with considerable mortality. Outcomes after noncardiac surgery in high-risk children with congenital heart disease warrant further investigation.

Advances in neonatal care have resulted in the survival of smaller infants with more complicated medical problems. From a surgical standpoint this has required novel approaches to patient care. Surgical care has evolved in many respects. Procedures performed on premature infants range from elective, minor procedures to major, emergent lifesaving interventions. The emergent nature of these surgical interventions has led to controversies in management. Certain conditions require surgical procedures that are commonly performed at the bedside by pediatric surgical specialists. Under other circumst

The purpose of this study is to demonstrate that repetitive minor surgical procedures allow for a high rate of permanent closure of perianal fistulas in patients with Crohn's disease (CD). Patients with perianal fistulizing CD (PFCD) who underwent perianal surgery at the University Hospital of Muenster between 2003 and 2018 were assessed for fistula characteristics and surgical procedures. We included 45 patients (m:f = 28:17) with a mean age of 27 years at first fistula appearance. Of these, 49% suffered from a complex fistula. An average of 4.2 (1-14) procedures were performed, abscess incis…

INTRODUCTION: Surgical care practitioners (SCPs) are an expanding group of professionals, drawn from nursing and the allied health professions. Amongst other functions, SCPs can provide a range of surgical procedures including a 'minor surgical' service. The aim of this study was to audit the volume and outcomes related to the SCP service at St Mary's since its inception.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: All prospectively collected data regarding SCP-managed patients between 2001 and 2005 were retrospectively audited. Volume, case mix, waiting times, complications and patient satisfaction were recorded

PURPOSE: Temporarily withholding antithrombotic medications for surgical procedures can increase thromboembolic risk. Many patients undergoing minor hand surgeries take these medications, requiring careful perioperative management by surgeons. Although general guidelines exist for periprocedural antithrombotic management, guideline adherence among surgeons performing minor hand procedures is unknown. This study aimed to assess current pre-procedural antithrombotic management strategies employed by hand surgeons for patients undergoing minor hand surgeries, specifically focusing on how closely

The outcome of various surgical procedures carried out in patients with severe (homozygote) factor XII deficiency were investigated for the appearance of blood coagulation-related complications with particular emphasis on thrombotic complications. The surgical procedures were total mastectomy, tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy, placement of a hip prosthesis, and double hernia repair. None of the patients slowed any complication. Several other reported cases of surgical procedures carried out in several patients ware found in the literature. Bleeding or thrombotic complications were noted in none

Many minimal defects of the terminal urethra may be left untreated; others may be considerably improved by a simple one-stage extension to a terminal position by one of the many one-stage "flap-strip" procedures. Patients with a marked ventriflexed glans are much better treated by the "kippered-glans" procedure; undertaken as a two-stage procedure, the functional and the cosmetic results of this procedure are extremely good and reliable. The results of one-stage procedures reflect the experience and the judgement of the surgeon but they tend to be less perfect and furthermore there is always a

BACKGROUND: In patients with mild type 1 von Willebrand disease (VWD), treatment guidelines suggest individualization of surgical management. However, these conditional recommendations are based on very low-certainty evidence due to limited data on surgical outcomes in this population.
OBJECTIVES: To characterize procedural bleeding prophylaxis strategies and outcomes in children with mild type 1 VWD.
METHODS: This is a retrospective cohort study that included patients aged between 0 and 21 years with mild type 1 VWD (defined as von Willebrand factor antigen and/or an activity of 30-50 IU/dL
