Hospital-Based Injury Patterns Among Motorcycle Couriers and Pedestrians Struck by Courier-Operated Motorcycles and Mopeds: A Multicenter Retrospective Study.

Background and Objectives: Courier-operated motorcycles and mopeds have become increasingly visible in urban traffic, raising concerns about injuries among both couriers and pedestrians struck by courier-operated vehicles. The study period coincided with the COVID-19 pandemic; however, this study was not designed to evaluate the effect of the pandemic on courier-related injuries. This multicenter retrospective study aimed to describe hospital-based injury patterns, injury severity, treatment requirements, complications, and mortality among selected courier-related casualties, including motorcy…

E-bikes and E-scooters are not bicycles or motorcycles: The case for a dedicated trauma registry mechanism.

BACKGROUND: Powered micromobility devices (PMDs), including electric scooters (e-scooters) and electric bicycles (e-bikes), can operate at speeds approaching those of low-speed motorcycles. Yet PMDs are treated as low-energy mechanisms in trauma surveillance systems and are not classified as distinct mechanisms of injury. Although prior studies report higher head injury rates in PMD crashes than bicycle crashes, injury severity and health care utilization relative to motorcycle crashes are not known. We hypothesized that e-scooter and e-bike crashes demonstrate distinct injury and resource uti…

Motorcycle helmets save lives, but not limbs: a National Trauma Data Bank analysis of functional outcomes after motorcycle crash.

BACKGROUND: The incidence of motorcycle fatalities over the last 10 y has nearly doubled. There is considerable evidence that motorcycle helmets save lives, but there are little data regarding the impact that helmets have on functional outcomes after a motorcycle crash. The objective of this study was to determine the difference between helmeted and non-helmeted motorcyclists in the odds of developing a functional deficit at discharge in three domains: speech, locomotion, and feeding. METHODS: Reviewed cases in the National Trauma Databank v7.0 involved in motorcycle collisions. Multiple logi

Traumatic brain injury among two-wheeled motor vehicle riders in Utsunomiya, Japan: a comparison between mopeds and motorcycles.

PURPOSE: Two-wheeled motor vehicles are dichotomized into mopeds and motorcycles (MCs) based on their engine capacity. While efforts have been made, mostly by European researchers, to evaluate the possible difference in the frequency/severity of riders' traumatic brain injury (TBI) between the two categories, the results have been inconsistent. METHODS: To evaluate whether such differences exist in Japan, a single-center, retrospective observational study was conducted on two-wheeled motor vehicle riders wearing a helmet during high-energy road traffic accident (RTA). Between January 2011 and…

On the backseat: Analyzing motorcycle passenger injuries in children.

INTRODUCTION: Despite the high risk of fatality from traveling in a motorcycle compared to motor vehicles, only five states have an age limit for motorcycle passengers. Literature is profoundly lacking on injury patterns of motorcycle passengers, particularly children. We studied injury patterns and helmet use for motorcycle passengers in children <18 years old in the US. METHODS: A 4-year retrospective cohort analysis of the ACS-TQIP for the years 2017-2020. All pediatric (age <18 years) trauma patients injured as motorcycle passengers were identified. Patients were stratified into two group

Fuel tank injury in a fatal motorcycle accident.

Vehicular trauma is the most common cause of pelvic fractures. In motorcycle collisions, the driver strikes or is struck by a fixed object, and is subjected to blunt trauma and deceleration forces. Injuries around the scrotum and perineum of victims in motorcycle accidents are known as a fuel tank injuries (FTI). We report the case of a 26-year-old male motorcyclist involved in a fatal high-speed head-on collision with a car. At autopsy, purple bruising distributed symmetrically over both hips with scrotal lacerations were found. Partial bowel evisceration through an abdominal lacerated wound,

Motorcycle-Associated Ocular Injuries: A Narrative Review.

PURPOSE: Motorcycle-related injuries involving the eye and orbit are not well characterized, with a paucity of prospective studies focusing specifically on motorcycle-associated eye injuries nor literature reviews having been conducted on the subject. To better understand the injury types and descriptive characteristics of patients experiencing motorcycle-associated eye injuries, we sought to conduct a narrative review. METHODS: The research team utilized the following databases: PubMed, EMBASE, and Web of Science to query for English articles from peer-reviewed journals that provided some pa

Traumatic fatal aortic rupture in motorcycle drivers.

Traumatic fatal aortic rupture (FAR) is a common finding in victims of motor vehicle crashes (MVC), but its aetiology and mechanisms of production remain an issue of major concern, above all in motorcyclists. This study reports a series of cases obtained from a retrospective analysis of traumatic FARs occurring in motorcycle drivers, with the aim of defining the injury patterns and correlating them with the mechanisms of FAR production. Circumstantial, autopsy and histology data were collected through a retrospective analysis of post mortem examinations performed at the Institute of Legal Medi

Epidemiology and patterns of musculoskeletal motorcycle injuries in the USA.

INTRODUCTION: Motorcycles have become an increasingly popular mode of transportation despite their association with a greater risk for injury compared with automobiles. Whereas the recent incidence of annual passenger vehicle fatalities in the United States of America (USA) has progressively declined, motorcycle fatalities have steadily increased in the past 11 years. Although motorcycle injuries (MIs) have been studied, to the author's knowledge there are no published reports on MIs in the USA during this 11-year period. Methods : Study data were derived from a prospectively collected Level I…

A review of risk factors and patterns of motorcycle injuries.

Per vehicle mile traveled, motorcycle riders have a 34-fold higher risk of death in a crash than people driving other types of motor vehicles. While lower-extremity injuries most commonly occur in all motorcycle crashes, head injuries are most frequent in fatal crashes. Helmets and helmet use laws have been shown to be effective in reducing head injuries and deaths from motorcycle crashes. Alcohol is the major contributing factor to fatal crashes. Enforcement of legal limits on the blood alcohol concentration is effective in reducing motorcycle deaths, while some alcohol-related interventions

Effects of alcohol impairment on motorcycle riding skills.

Alcohol intoxication is a significant risk factor for fatal traffic crashes; however, there is sparse research on the impairing effects of alcohol on skills involved in motorcycle control. Twenty-four male motorcycle riders between the ages of 21 and 50 were assessed on a test track with task scenarios based on the Motorcycle Safety Foundation's (MSF) training program. A balanced incomplete block design was used to remove confounding artifacts (learning effects) by randomizing four BAC levels across three test days. In general, intoxicated riders demonstrated longer response times and adopted

CO2 and O2 concentrations in integral motorcycle helmets.

Inhaling air which contains excess CO2 and/or is oxygen-deficient is known to present health risks and to diminish human cognitive abilities. The average CO2 concentrations relevant to a motorcyclist wearing an integral helmet were measured 20 years ago and found to be alarmingly large. The purpose of the present study was to examine gas concentrations typically inhaled by a motorcyclist. Average concentrations of CO2 near the upper lip for persons (n = 4) wearing integral motorcycle helmets were measured in the laboratory and the field to facilitate comparison to previous work, and similarly
