BACKGROUND: Mucoceles are slowly expanding cystic lesions with respiratory epithelium containing mucus most commonly affecting the frontal and ethmoidal sinuses. They are caused by obstruction of sinus ostium. Mucoceles exert pressure on the bony boundaries and due to the proximity to the brain and orbit extension to these areas are common.
CASE PRESENTATION: A case of a frontal mucocele with an accompanying orbital abscess mimicking a fronto-orbital mucocele is reported. A 77 year old female patient suffering from left sided proptosis and pain around the left eye was admitted to our departme…

The mucocele of the appendix can be described as an obstructive dilatation of the appendix by an intraluminal accumulation of mucus. A 60-year-old diabetic male patient presented with chief complains of pain in right lower abdomen for the past 2 months which was dull in nature, not associated with fever, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, or any urinary complains. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CECT) of the abdomen revealed appendiceal lumen distended, filled with fluid collection. There was abrupt narrowing seen at its junction with cecum. Features were suggestive of appendicular mucoc…

Mucocele of the paranasal sinuses is a rare disease with slow evolution. It is a benign, encapsulated and destructive formation filled with mucous fluid and tapistrated with respiratory epithelium. Of all the paranasal sinuses, the sphenoid sinus is affected in only 1-7% of the cases. We present two cases of mucocele of the sphenoid sinus involving the posterior ethmoidal cells. We consider here their clinical presentation, use of neuroimaging in the diagnosis, surgical care and postoperative results. Both patients presented with a history of persistent headache and in addition, one of them ha…

INTRODUCTION: Paranasal sinus mucocoele is a benign pseudocystic lesion, which may originate from any sinus cavities when their natural ostia are blocked. Raising mucocoele in frontal, ethmoid or sphenoid sinus causes headache, disorders of eye mobility and deformities of forehead or orbit.
AIM OF THIS STUDY: was clinical analysis of treatment results taking into consideration the method of surgical treatment.
MATERIAL AND METHOD: Presented material consists of 42 patients (39 adults and 3 children), 22 females and 20 males, in the age from 8 to 76 treated at Department of Otolaryngology of

The sphenoid sinus is the least common site of mucocele of all paranasal sinuses. It is very rare in children, especially in those younger than 12 years when pneumatization of the sphenoid sinus is completed. We report a case of histologically proven sphenoidal mucocele in a 5-year-old child. The child presented with an acute onset of significant visual impairment and headache. His vision gradually improved after trans-nasal sphenoidotomy and drainage of the sinus content with return of complete normal baseline vision after 2 months.

5 patients (1 woman, 4 men) with mucoceles of the paranasal sinuses were hospitalized in ENT Department in Kalisz from 1992 to 2001. In two cases mucocele was in frontal sinus and penetrated to orbita, in next two cases it was in maxillary sinus. In the case of woman mucocele was in ethmomaxillary complexus and destroyed medial and inferior orbit's walles. All patients were operated and completely cured.

In a retrospective study authors refer to the treatment results in four patients with mucocele of the paranasal sinuses, who were hospitalized during a 30-months period at the Department of Otorhinolaryngology of the Charles University Hospital, in Prague, Czech Republic. In all patients the frontal sinus was involved, in three cases the involvement was unilateral, in one case bilateral. In the medical history of all patients, an injury, inflammation, or surgery of the paranasal sinus in the past (5-30 years ago) were present. In three patients, proptosis of the eye, swollen upper eyelid, and …

BACKGROUND: Patients with paraocular sinus masses may manifest ocular complications, including orbital displacement, proptosis, diplopia, restricted extraocular muscles, decreased vision, chemosis, pain, and optic neuritis.
METHODS: Two patients with paraocular sinus masses came to our clinic for examination. One had proptosis and orbital displacement and a chief symptom of increasing diplopia, along with dull brow pain and sudden decreased vision of the left eye. He was diagnosed with polypoid disease and mucoceles of the ethmoidal and frontal sinuses. The second patient experienced pain and…

Based on 5 personal cases, the authors conducted a study of sphenoid mucocele, based notably on the results of CAT-scanning. This is the key step in diagnosis. Indeed, it makes it possible to determine the origin of the mass, and its growth, and lysis or even consolidation of bone walls. Magnetic resonance should supply valuable information on the inflammatory nature of the mass, its relationship with the pituitary and chiasma, as well as the images on a sagittal section. The studies conducted to date in general show a different presentation of the tumors in comparison with mucoceles. Because …

The term mucocele designates a cyst developing from a sinus mucosa, generally the frontal and/or ethmoidal sinuses. They present clinically as a benign tumor, and their diagnosis and treatment is usually simple. Maxillary sinus localizations are exceptional, however, and raise numerous problems in daily practice. Three cases of maxillary sinus mucoceles are reported.

Mucocele of the sphenoidal sinus is a rare lesion often mistaken for a pituitary tumour. A case first misdiagnosed as pituitary tumour is described. Additional radiography including CT findings led to the correct diagnosis. The treatment of sphenoidal mucoceles is surgical. The sublabial trans-septal route has proved to be an excellent approach.

A 4-year-old German Shepherd, with a 3-week history of anorexia, intermittent dysphagia and a serous nasal discharge, had a fluctuant mass protruding from its left pharyngeal wall. Cytologic examination of an aspirate suggested a salivary mucocele. Creation of a window in the mucocele did not prevent recurrence, so the lining of the sac was resected, after which the mucocele did not recur.

Two patients with mucoceles are described. The first case had exophthalmos, and the second had visual loss suggestive of retrobulbar optic neuritis. Possible ocular manifestations of mucoceles are discussed, and the computed tomography findings of these are shown. The treatment of mucoceles is reviewed, and it is stressed that a team approach involving ophthalmology, otorhinolaryngology, and radiology is essential for accurate diagnosis and treatment. Paranasal sinus mucoceles can present with a multitude of different symptoms. The type of presentation is usually determined by the original sit…

A mucocele of the sphenoid sinus caused persistent headache and destroyed the pituitary fossa before it was diagnosed and treated surgically via the transnasal route. The possible absence of clinical leads to the nature of this condition, and the importance of establishing a tissue diagnosis with destructive lesions in this area, are emphasized by this case.

Mucoceles of the sphenoid sinuses are uncommon; 60 cases have been reported in the world literature to date. Signs and symptoms are caused by local expansion of the mucocele and include headache (the most common symptom), ocular field deficits, external ophthalmoplegia (particularly the sixth cranial nerve), and proptosis. Radiologic correlation in the form of plain films and polytomorgraphy is the most reliable guide in the diagnosis of sphenoid sinus disease. Therapy of these lesions is surgical, and drainage can be achieved via the external ethmoid or sublabial transseptal route. Three case…
