A 13-year-old girl presented with hyersomnia and incontinence of urine. The clinical course was complicated by strabism, muscle weakness and coordination and balance disturbances. VEP recording were pathologic. Myelin basic protein in the cerebrospinal fluid was elevated. Nuclear resonance imaging of the brain revealed multiple areas of demyelination. Two cases of involuntary movements of the type of segmental dystonia were observed in patients with a history of multiple sclerosis since many years. The reports on dystonic involuntary movements in multiple sclerosis are scant but, together with the present cases, they suggest that dystonia may be a sign of multiple sclerosis, although a rare one.

In order to clarify endocrine abnormalities due to hypothalamic involvement in multiple sclerosis (MS), serum prolactin levels were measured in 27 patients with MS and 22 healthy subjects. The presence of hypothalamic lesions was also studied by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Serum prolactin levels were found to be significantly higher in MS patients than in healthy controls in both sexes. Thirty consecutive patients from peninsular Malaysia with clinically definite multiple sclerosis were studied; 80% were ethnic Chinese, with a female-male ratio of 5:1. The average age at onset was 29.7 years, with one relapse average every 1.9 years. Optic-spinal recurrence was the most common clinical pattern of the disease, accounting for 63.3% (19/30) of the cases. The individual with multiple sclerosis (MS) experiences a severe alteration in lifestyle both physiologically and emotionally. Sexuality is an integral part of life. However, discussion of alterations in sexuality by health care workers has traditionally been viewed as taboo. Specifically, the sexual concerns in chronic debilitating disorders such as MS have been neglected. This paper will explore physical and psychological aspects of MS on a patient's sexuality. Implications for nursing practice will also be considered.

Standardized interview techniques, diagnostic criteria, and rating scales were used to assess 50 moderately disabled multiple sclerosis (MS) patients. Fifty-four percent met lifetime Research Diagnostic Criteria for major depression, with a significant increase in the rate from before to after the onset of MS symptoms. Multiple sclerosis is a demyelinating central nervous system disorder that affects young, otherwise healthy people. Presenting symptoms can be variable; the complaints are often vague and suggestive of a functional disorder. Diagnosis is based mainly on the clinical triad of young age, involvement of two or more areas within the central nervous system, and history characterized by exacerbations and remissions. In selected cases, the diagnosis is aided by cerebrospinal fluid examination, evoked potentials and computed tomographic scanning.

A case of multiple sclerosis was diagnosed as paranoid schizophrenia 10 years earlier. The schizophrenic disorder, severe and almost nonremittent for 10 years, failed to respond to adequate drug therapy. The computerized axial tomography scan revealed moderate atrophy of the anterior cerebellar vermis, a finding of interest in view of studies which have implicated anterior vermis pathology in the pathogenesis of schizophrenia.
