The Contribution of the Nrf2/ARE System to Mechanotransduction in Musculoskeletal and Periodontal Tissues.

Mechanosensing plays an essential role in maintaining tissue functions. Across the human body, several tissues (i.e., striated muscles, bones, tendons, ligaments, as well as cartilage) require mechanical loading to exert their physiological functions. Contrary, mechanical unloading triggers pathological remodeling of these tissues and, consequently, human body dysfunctions. At the cellular level, both mechanical loading and unloading regulate a wide spectrum of cellular pathways. Among those, pathways regulated by oxidants such as reactive oxygen species (ROS) represent an essential node criti

Modeling the musculoskeletal system of an insect thorax for flapping flight.

Indirect actuation of the wings via thoracic deformation is a unique mechanism widely observed in flying insect species. The physical properties of the thorax have been intensively studied in terms of their ability to efficiently generate wingbeats. The basic mechanism of indirect wing actuation is generally explained as a lever model on a cross-sectional plane, where the dorsoventral movement of the mesonotum (dorsal exoskeleton of the mesothorax) generated by contractions of indirect muscles actuates the wing. However, the model considers the mesonotum as an ideal flat plane, whereas the mes

Flatness of musculoskeletal systems under functional electrical stimulation.

Control of musculoskeletal yy system through functional electrical stimulation (FES) still remains a complex and a challenging process. Indeed, the used musculoskeletal models are often complex and highly nonlinear, which makes their control and inversion (getting appropriate inputs from a desired outputs) very difficult. On the other hand, the system flatness has been proved to be an efficient method for nonlinear system control, since in this technique, the nonlinear system can be controlled more easily through its flat outputs. Therefore, it is very promising to apply this control technique

Effects of disease-afflicted and aging neurons on the musculoskeletal system.

The musculoskeletal system includes skeletal muscles, bones and innervating axons from neurons in the central and peripheral nervous systems. Together, they form the largest structure in the body. They also initiate and coordinate locomotion, provide structural stability, and contribute to metabolism and homeostasis. Because of these functions, much effort has been devoted to ascertaining the impact of acute and chronic stress, such as disease, injury and aging, on the musculoskeletal system. This review will examine the role of the nervous system in the deleterious changes that accrue in skel

Inflammaging: Immune-Metabolic Crosstalk Between the Prostate-Testis and Musculoskeletal System.

Male reproductive aging is increasingly recognized as a systemic process in which inflammaging drives progressive dysfunction of urogenital tissues. Key mechanisms include immune-metabolic alterations, activation of the NOD-like receptor protein 3 (NLRP3) inflammasome, as well as epigenetic remodeling. Evidence from experimental and clinical studies suggests that these processes are often investigated independently, and integrative models in humans remain limited. Here, we propose a conceptual framework linking the prostate, testis, and skeletal muscle, in which oxidative stress may act as a m

Advances in applications of low-dimensional piezoelectric materials in musculoskeletal system.

Musculoskeletal disorders pose a significant global health burden, necessitating innovative strategies for tissue repair and regeneration. Low-dimensional piezoelectric materials, characterized by their nanoscale dimensions and unique electromechanical coupling properties, have emerged as promising candidates for addressing these challenges. This review synthesizes advances in the application of low-dimensional piezoelectric materials (including 0D nanoparticles, 1D nanowires/nanofibers, and 2D nanosheets) across musculoskeletal tissues (including articular cartilage, bone, skeletal muscle and

Smart Strategies to Overcome Drug Delivery Challenges in the Musculoskeletal System.

The musculoskeletal system (MSKS) is composed of specialized connective tissues including bone, muscle, cartilage, tendon, ligament, and their subtypes. The primary function of the MSKS is to provide protection, structure, mobility, and mechanical properties to the body. In the process of fulfilling these functions, the MSKS is subject to wear and tear during aging and after injury and requires subsequent repair. MSKS diseases are a growing burden due to the increasing population age. The World Health Organization estimates that 1.71 billon people suffer from MSKS diseases worldwide. MSKS dise

Musculoskeletal Pathology in Cerebral Palsy: A Classification System and Reliability Study.

This article presents a classification of lower limb musculoskeletal pathology (MSP) for ambulant children with cerebral palsy (CP) to identify key features from infancy to adulthood. The classification aims to improve communication, and to guide referral for interventions, which if timed appropriately, may optimise long-term musculoskeletal health and function. Consensus was achieved by discussion between staff in a Motion Analysis Laboratory (MAL). A four-stage classification system was developed: Stage 1: Hypertonia: Abnormal postures are dynamic. Stage 2: Contracture: Fixed shortening of o

Magnetic resonance imaging of the musculoskeletal system. Part 4. The knee.

Since its introduction to musculoskeletal imaging in the early 1980s, magnetic resonance imaging has proven to be an excellent technique for evaluating patients with knee problems. Studies have shown it to be accurate in the identification of abnormalities of the menisci, ligaments, patellofemoral joints, and other soft tissue and osseous structures in the knee. The main advantages of magnetic resonance imaging are its noninvasive nature and its high accuracy and negative predictive value in evaluating the menisci and anterior cruciate ligament. Magnetic resonance imaging has been shown to be

Magnetic resonance imaging of the musculoskeletal system. Part 5. The wrist.

Musculoskeletal radiology has been transformed with the advent of magnetic resonance imaging. Magnetic resonance imaging provides visualization of the complex anatomy of the wrist and delineation of numerous pathologic processes, which are difficult to visualize with conventional imaging modalities. With the use of sophisticated pulse sequences and a dedicated extremity coil, magnetic resonance imaging allows evaluation of osseous and ligamentous injuries, arthritides, tumors, and tumor-like conditions. Magnetic resonance imaging techniques will be emphasized and anatomy and various pathologic

Magnetic resonance imaging of the musculoskeletal system: Part 3. The elbow.

Magnetic resonance imaging provides clinically useful information in assessing the elbow joint. Superior depiction of muscles, ligaments, and tendons as well as the ability to directly visualize nerves, bone marrow, and hyaline cartilage are advantages of magnetic resonance imaging relative to conventional imaging techniques. Ongoing improvements in surface coil design and newer pulse sequences have resulted in higher quality magnetic resonance images of the elbow. Traumatic and degenerative disorders of the elbow are well seen with MR imaging. The sequelae of medial traction and lateral compr

Endocannabinoid system attenuates emotional stress-induced orofacial musculoskeletal pain in rats.

Orofacial musculoskeletal pain (OMP) is a common feature of temporomandibular disorders (TMD), a group of conditions affecting the temporomandibular joint, chewing muscles, and associated structures. The etiology of muscular TMD is currently understood within a biopsychosocial model of pain, highlighting the complexity related to OMP. In this context, the objective of this study was to investigate the OMP induced by psychological/emotional stress (ES) in rats, regarding the role of the endocannabinoid system (ECS) through CB1 and CB2 receptors. Male Wistar rats were divided into Control and ES

EMG-assisted forward dynamics simulation of subject-specific mandible musculoskeletal system.

Assessment of mandibular dynamics is essential for examining stomatognathic functions, and many kinds of stomatognathic diseases, such as temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder and jaw tumors, require individual diagnosis and rehabilitation treatments. Musculoskeletal models of the mandible system provide an efficient tool for fulfilling these tasks, but most existing models are generic, without direct correlation to subject-specific data. For this reason, the objective of this study was to establish a subject-specific mandible modeling framework based on clinical measurements, including medic

General medicine and surgery for dental practitioners. Part 8: Musculoskeletal system.

Disorders of the musculoskeletal system may impact on dental management in diverse ways. Diseases of the bones may have a direct influence on treatment and joint disorders can also cause difficulties. Cervical spine involvement may lead to poor neck extension causing difficulties in providing dental treatment under local anaesthesia or allowing the provision of a safe general anaesthetic. Muscular disorders may mitigate against safe general anaesthesia. As with all medical disorders a thorough history can help to prevent many of the possible problems which may occur secondary to musculoskeleta
