BACKGROUND: Gloriosa superba produces an array of alkaloids including colchicine, a compound of interest in the treatment of various diseases. The tuber of Gloriosa superba is a rich source of colchicine which has shown anti-gout, anti-inflammatory, and anti-tumor activity. However, this promising compound remains expensive and Gloriosa superba is such a good source in global scale. Increase in yield of naturally occurring colchicine is an important area of investigation.

Intracellular arbuscular mycorrhiza symbiosis between plants and glomeromycotan fungi leads to formation of highly branched fungal arbuscules that release mineral nutrients to the plant host. Their development is regulated in plants by a mechanistically unresolved interplay between symbiosis, nutrient, and hormone (gibberellin) signaling. Using a positional cloning strategy and a retrotransposon insertion line, we identify two novel alleles of Lotus japonicus REDUCED ARBUSCULAR MYCORRHIZA1 (RAM1) encoding a GRAS protein. We confirm that RAM1 is a central regulator of arbuscule development: arb

Phosphorus is an essential macronutrient for plant growth and development, yet its availability in many soils is limited by strong chemical fixation and low mobility. Arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) symbiosis provides an important biological strategy for improving plant phosphate acquisition by establishing specialized arbuscules within root cortical cells, where reciprocal nutrient exchange occurs across the periarbuscular membrane (PAM). Among the phosphate transporter families involved in this process, the mycorrhiza-specific PHT1 transporters PT4 in Medicago truncatula and PT11 in Oryza sativa

Ericoid mycorrhizal (ErM) fungi play a crucial role across terrestrial ecosystems, forming mutualistic symbiosis with Ericaceae and contributing to soil organic matter dynamics. However, compared to other fungal groups, their biogeography remains unknown. Here, we combined several analytical approaches to analyze a newly compiled, large-scale dataset comprising 39 163 soil samples and more than 13 million ITS rRNA sequences assigned to ErM fungi. Specifically, we asked: What are the global patterns of ErM fungal species richness and relative abundance (out of all fungi) and their predictors, a

How the mycorrhizal type of tree species regulates the composition and assembly processes of rhizosphere bacterial communities remains unclear. We selected five arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) and five ectomycorrhizal (EcM) tree species from two typical forests across different climatic zones, namely a subtropical evergreen broadleaved forest at Tiantong Station in Zhejiang and a temperate broadleaved Korean pine forest at Maoershan Station in Heilongjiang. We analyzed the rhizosphere soil physicochemical properties and bacterial community composition, and quantified the assembly processes of bact

Risleya atropurpurea, a fully mycoheterotrophic species in the subtribe Calypsoinae, is a rare Himalayan orchid whose fungal associations and nutritional strategy remain poorly understood. In this study, we combined high-throughput ITS amplicon sequencing and stable isotope natural abundance analyses to investigate the mycorrhizal associations and nutrient acquisition strategy of R. atropurpurea in a natural habitat in southwestern China. Fungal community profiling revealed the dominance of a single operational taxonomic unit affiliated with Basidiodendron caesiocinereum (Auriculariales). Stab

The use of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) as biofertilizers is limited by variable outcomes. Although differential outcomes among AMF and hosts are well documented, the relative importance of fungal identity, host identity, and soil nutrient availability in determining symbiotic outcomes remains unclear, particularly in soils containing resident AMF communities. We crossed five AMF isolates spanning a gradient of phylogenetic relatedness and ecological strategies with four host plant species under two soil nutrient levels in a greenhouse experiment. We quantified inoculant establishment an

Root-associated fungi (RAF) are important for plant performance because they form beneficial, neutral, or pathogenic relationships with their hosts, thus regulating nutrient uptake, stress tolerance, and overall plant fitness. At the transition from marine to terrestrial ecosystems, salt marshes are shaped by strong environmental gradients and provide vital ecosystem services such as climate regulation and coastal protection, yet RAF remain poorly understood in these systems. Therefore, we examined the community structure and abundance along this ecotone of RAF in general, and arbuscular mycor

Fully mycoheterotrophic orchids rely entirely on fungal symbionts for carbon acquisition, are often highly specialized in their fungal associations, and exhibit stable isotope signatures distinct from autotrophic plants. Danxiaorchis yangii is a rare, leafless orchid endemic to subtropical China whose nutritional ecology has not been previously examined. We combined high-throughput fungal community profiling with multi-element stable isotope natural abundance analyses (δ¹³C, δ¹⁵N, δ²H, δ¹⁸O) to investigate fungal associations and nutrient acquisition in D. yangii. Mycorrhizal rhizomes were dom

Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) is a globally significant crop valued for its nutritional content and economic importance. This study evaluated the effect of individual and combined inoculation of two growth-promoting microorganisms in tomato: the entomopathogenic fungus Beauveria bassiana and the arbuscular mycorrhizal fungus Rhizophagus irregularis. The research was conducted in chamber conditions using tomato plants cultivar Elpida, at two developmental stages: seedlings and transplanted plants. Colonization of B. bassiana in plant tissues was confirmed by isolation from different organs,

Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungus (AMF) Entrophospora lutea was previously selected as a highly compatible isolate for lupine, and the main objective of the present study was to further improve its performance and practical applicability by developing two E. lutea formulations using peat and vermiculite carriers enriched with various biostimulants. Incorporating biostimulants into AMF formulations can enhance fungal performance and root symbiosis. The first formulation contained proline, ascorbic acid, and hemicellulose, whereas the second contained proline, humic acid, and mannitol. Both formulat

Strains of the arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungus Rhizophagus irregularis belong to one of two nuclear organizations: homokaryons, which carry genetically similar nuclei, and dikaryons, which harbour two genetically distinct nuclear populations. Although traits tend to be conserved within each group, it is unclear whether their capacity to adapt or exhibit phenotypic plasticity in response to environmental change differs. Here, we tested whether dikaryotic strains have greater potential than homokaryotic strains for rapid adaptation or plasticity in response to shifts in soil phosphorus (P) av

Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) play critical roles in plant secondary metabolism; however, their community dynamics across different growth years in medicinal plants such as Polygonum cuspidatum remain underexplored. This study investigated AMF community succession in the rhizosphere and roots of one-, two-, and four-year-old P. cuspidatum using high-throughput sequencing, quantified six bioactive compounds and soil nutrients, and analyzed transcript levels of resveratrol biosynthesis-related genes. Intraradical AMF colonization rates declined sharply with plant age. Rhizosphere AMF divers

This study evaluated the long-term cryopreservation efficacy of two previously developed protocols-the Modified Perlite Protocol (MPP) and the Vermiculite Protocol (VP)-using 65 ectomycorrhizal basidiomycete culture strains stored for five years in the vapor phase of a liquid nitrogen tank. Survival rates were assessed based on recovery ratios, with both MPP and VP showing high viability: 64 of 65 strains showed complete recovery under each protocol. Colony morphology remained stable across all methods, showing no visible phenotypic changes due to cryopreservation. Regarding post-thaw mycelial

BACKGROUND: Understanding the complex interactions between plants, Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi (AMF), and elevated atmospheric CO2 (eCO2) is crucial for enhancing agricultural sustainability and productivity, particularly in the face of future climate change. While elevated CO2 concentrations can influence AMF colonization development, AMF are known to benefit plants by improving nutrient uptake, especially phosphorus, enhancing drought tolerance, and increasing resistance to certain soil-borne pathogens. These beneficial effects of AMF can potentially mitigate some of the negative impacts of

The increased ultraviolet radiation (UV) due to the altered stratospheric ozone leads to multiple plant physiological and biochemical adaptations, likely affecting their interaction with other organisms, such as pests and pathogens. Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) and UV-B treatment can be used as eco-friendly techniques to protect crops from pests by activating plant mechanisms of resistance. In this study, we investigated plant (Lactuca sativa) response to UV-B exposure and Funneliformis mosseae (IMA1) inoculation as well as the role of a major insect pest, Spodoptera littoralis. Lettuce

Cadmium (Cd) stress causes serious damage to plants, inducing various physiological and biochemical disruptions that lead to reduced plant biomass and compromised growth. The study investigated the combined effects of silicon (Si) and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) on mitigating Cd stress in plants, revealing promising results in enhancing plant tolerance to Cd toxicity. Under Cd stress, plant biomass was significantly reduced (-33% and -30% shoot and root dry weights) as compared to control. However, Si and AMF application ameliorated this effect, leading to increased shoot and root dry w

More than two-thirds of terrestrial plants acquire nutrients by forming a symbiosis with arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi. AM fungal hyphae recruit distinct microbes into their hyphosphere, the narrow region of soil influenced by hyphal exudates. They thereby shape this so-called second genome of AM fungi, which significantly contributes to nutrient mobilization and turnover. We summarize current insights into characteristics of the hyphosphere microbiome and the role of hyphal exudates on orchestrating its composition. The hyphal exudates not only contain carbon-rich compounds but also promo

The fate of carbon (C) captured by forest trees during photosynthesis is influenced by the supply of other resources. Fixed C may be partitioned among biomolecules within the leaf and/or allocated throughout the tree to growth, storage and maintenance activities. Phosphorus (P) availability often limits tree productivity due to its high biological demand and strong interactions with soil minerals. As ectomycorrhizal (ECM) fungi play critical roles in enhancing phosphate (Pi) acquisition by their hosts, these symbioses will influence the fate of C within trees and forested ecosystems. Using Pop
