BACKGROUND: Cutaneous myiasis is a well-established diagnosis in returning travelers from tropical countries. The most common form of myiasis seen in this population is localized furuncular myiasis caused by Dermatobia hominis and Cordylobia anthropophaga. There are limited data on the disease course and outcome in travelers to tropical countries.
METHODS: A retrospective observational study of patients who presented with myiasis was conducted between 1999 and July 2014 in the post-travel clinics in Israel. Data regarding exposure history, travel duration, clinical presentation, treatment, an…

Tungiasis (sand flea disease) and myiasis are ectoparasitoses, in which the infectious agent resides temporarily in the skin (myiasis) or dies and is eventually eliminated (tungiasis). Both diseases are zoonoses. Whereas in myiasis humans are only an accidental host, in tungiasis the prevalence in humans is similar to that of their domestic animals. In travellers returning from the tropics tungiasis and myiasis are not rare, however they are frequently misdiagnosed. The diagnosis of both infestations is made clinically, and laboratory investigations are not helpful. In tungiasis the clinical p…

Tungiasis and myiasis are common ectoparasitic infestations that occur in developing countries in the tropics, particularly where poverty and poor standards of basic hygiene exist. The growth in international travel to and from these regions has led to an increase in the presentation of these conditions in nonendemic countries. Despite recent progress in the treatment and prevention of tungiasis and myiasis, diagnosis can present a challenge to those unfamiliar with these conditions, especially when they present in nonendemic countries. Tungiasis is caused by the penetration of the female sand…

During the 1989-1991 year period, leprosy patients with various ulcers, attending the surgical O.P.D. at CJIL, Agra were seen. Of these, 64 cases were found to be infested with maggots. Live maggots were collected in all cases from different sites viz. nasal cavity, hand, great toe and second toe. It was possible to rear the maggots into flies in 53 out of 64 cases. In 11 cases the maggots did not survive and died in the early part of their life cycle. Four different types of flies were identified viz. Sarcophaga haemorrhoidalis, Chrysomya bezziana, Callitroga americana and Musca domestica.

A case of cutaneous myiasis was reported in a 3.5-month-old turkey. The bird was invaded by a very large number of maggots on its posterior half. The maggots killed the bird and consumed all the flesh within 48 hours. Microscopic examination of the maggots revealed that they belonged to Lucilia sericata (a dipterous fly). The incidence of myiasis in birds was also discussed.

The most important insects from medical point of view are the blood suckers or the insect- borne diseases. A traveler presented with a furuncular skin abscess and periorbital edema. A larva was surgically removed from the abscess and identified as a larva of Cordylobia rodhaini. Myiasis caused by C. rodhaini is called Lund's fly myiasis and only rarely is reported in humans. After disinfection, the remaining lesion healed without further intervention and the edema resolved.

Human myiasis may be caused by several species of dipterous larvae. It is widespread in the tropics and subtropics particularly in Africa and the Americas and can occur in other parts of the world although less frequently. Larval infestation mostly affects the skin but can also involve wounds, bones, intestines and body cavities. Diagnosis is mainly clinical. The rule of treatment is to remove the larvae and treat any associated infection. Frequent international travel, immigration and rising global trade increase the likelihood of imported infestations. It is therefore vital that physicians i…
