BACKGROUND: Orofacial myofunctional therapy (OMT) has been recommended as a safe, effective, and low-cost option for treatment of obstructive sleep apnea-hypopnea syndrome (OSAHS). This study aims to evaluate the therapeutic effects of a WeChat mini-program-based OMT in adults with OSAHS compared to traditional home-based OMT. We hypothesize that patients trained with a WeChat mini-program-based OMT will show greater improvement in sleep quality, health-related quality of life, and exercise adherence than patients with traditional home-based rehabilitation therapy.
METHODS: This study is a si…

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Pediatric obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a prevalent medical condition, affecting 1-5% of non-syndromic children an … erapeutic strategies. Therefore, a protocol is presented to evaluate the effectiveness of orofacial myofunctional therapy (OMT) as a treatment for OSA in two pediatric populations: (1) Non-syndromic children aged 4-18 years: 10 weeks of OMT. (2) Children with Down syndrome aged 4-18 years: 20 weeks of OMT. Effects of the OMT program will be evaluated on: sleep paramete …

Aim Balanced function of the orofacial muscles is important for normal occlusion and dentition; however, patients with malocclusion often present with myofunctional disorder (MFD). Myofunctional therapy (MFT) has received much attention as a method for reducing MFD. Moreover, prefabricated functional appliances (PFAs) have been developed as a method to eliminate abnormal muscle pressure and guide the tongue into the correct position. However, PFAs have disadvantages, such as poor intraoral retention, limited usage time due to discomfort and poor patient compliance, and changes in the axis of t…

INTRODUCTION: The main treatment for sleep apnoeas and hypopnoeas syndrome (SAHS) is continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP). However, patients sometimes do not adhere to the treatment protocol. Supplementary and complementary therapies have appeared as alternatives. Some of the therapies which are especially important are those related to myofunctional (MFT) and postural therapy (PT), as all of them are non-invasive, and their application is simpler than that of CPAP. We aim to present a protocol for a systematic review and meta-analysis for investigating new SAHS treatments, including the

OBJECTIVE: Traumatic lesion of the lip buccal mucosa may develop due to a repetitive lip sucking habit, secondary to a dental space which opened in the dental in adult patients. The non surgical treatment approach is based on increasing of patient's awareness to the sucking habit along with the creation of a change in the oral and dental surrounding tissues. The following case included a failure to identify a traumatic habit of lower lip sucking, resulting in a buccal mucosa overgrowth. Combined conservative periodontal and orthodontic approach will be presented to address this clinical issue

BACKGROUND: Lip incompetence is an important issue in orthodontics. No study has evaluated the effects of the combination of headgear + lip exercises on lip incompetence. Therefore, this study was conducted.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was a longitudinal randomized clinical trial on 29 subjects (16 controls and 13 experimental subjects). Both groups were treated with standardized activator high-pull headgear (and followed up monthly) for 6-8 months. In the experimental group, patients were also instructed to practice certain lip exercises 3 sessions a day, 5 times per session. Pre-/post-treat

PURPOSE: To investigate the influence of photobiomodulation associated with orofacial myofunctional therapy (OMT) in patients with temporomandibular muscle disorders (TMD).
METHODS: Randomized, blinded trial clinical study with a sample of eleven women with muscle TMD divided into two groups. The experimental group (EG) consisted of five women submitted to orofacial myofunctional therapy associated with photobiomodulation, and the control group (CG) consisted of six women submitted to orofacial myofunctional therapy associated with inactive photobiomodulation (placebo). The intervention was p…

BACKGROUND: Occlusion alterations can be associated to bad habits (such as thumb sucking, oral breathing, atypical swallowing and labial interposition) which can lead to functional anomalies.
CASE REPORT: Three cases are reported with the good results of myofunctional and orthodontic therapy.
CONCLUSION: When there are bad habits, orthodontics should be combined with a myofunctional therapy.

Increased pain and/or discomfort during chewing, speaking, and swallowing have been commonly reported by patients with Temporomandibular Dysfunction (TMD). Speech-language pathology therapy (orofacial myofunctional therapy - OMT) has been proposed as part of the treatment for this condition; however, it is a modality that should be introduced when the TMD context and the pain are not accentuated, so that they do not prevent or hinder the performance of exercises. The aim of this study was to analyze the effect of OMT on the treatment of patients with TMD, according to the Research Diagnostic C…

The aim of this study is to report three cases that needed myofunctional and orthodontic treatment and the good results achieved after the therapy. Orthodontic treatment alone, in presence of bad habits, is not enough to solve the orthodontic issues, so it needs to be combined with myofunctional treatment.

UNLABELLED: Myofunctional trainer for kids (T4K, Myofunctional Research Co., Australia) is a prefabricated, single-size functional appliance that claims to correct malocclusion at an early age by acting on muscular dysfunctions and repositioning the mandible in a forward direction. Myofunctional therapy through the Trainer System™ was implemented in this case for the treatment of class II malocclusion in mixed dentition. The results showed that an early approach in selected cases, taking into account patient preferences and compliance, is possible and could be considered in treatment planning …

Myofunctional appliances are customarily used to treat Class II malocclusions in growing children to alter their growth. Functional appliances are widely accepted to enhance skeletal relationships in the short term efficiently. It utilizes muscular forces by muscles to make dental and skeleton modifications. The myofunctional appliance might be removable or fixed. The variation of mode and method of action depends on the design, but the forces created by the muscles' stretching provide their effect. According to research, the effectiveness of functional appliances as a therapy for Class II mal

The origins of Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy began in the early 1960's by orthodontists who recognized the importance of functional nasal breathing, proper swallowing, and more ideal oral rest postures. Re-patterning these functions through myofunctional therapy assisted with better orthodontic outcomes and improved stability. Experts in orofacial myology have concluded that improper oral rest postures and tongue thrusting may be the result of hypertrophy of the lymphatic tissues in the upper airway. Orthodontists are aware of the deleterious effects these habits have on the developing face …

Noonan syndrome is a multiple malformation disorder with an autosomal dominant inheritance pattern. Congenital heart defects, short stature, thoracic deformities, short neck with webbing, hypertelorism, malocclusions, and feeding difficulties are some of the commonly observed clinical features. We report on a case of a patient with Noonan syndrome, severe open bite, associated feeding difficulties, and strong gag reflex, discussing conservative management with myofunctional therapy. Myofunctional therapy has demonstrated a successful outcome, reestablishing masticatory function and routine den…

In this article the authors propose a specific myofunctional therapy protocol for children with Down syndrome. For these patients, who usually present with atypical swallowing problems, mouth breathing and lip incompetence, the use of a myofunctional therapy protocol with specific exercises has been shown to improve orofacial and nasal functions. In addition to the functional results, such as the correction of the atypical swallowing, restoration of lip competence, breathing improvement and reduction of nasal rhinorrhea, there were also aesthetic results. This protocol can be useful to improve…
