Correlation of Narrow Band Imaging Patterns with Histopathology Reports in Head and Neck Lesions.

INTRODUCTION: Head and neck malignancies are associated with poor prognosis and poor quality-of-life if detected late. Narrow-Band-Imaging(NBI) is one of the important tools, which helps in detecting these lesions earlier. By using narrow-wavelength(400-550 nm) it enhances the mucosal and submucosal vascularity against the pale mucosal background which helps us detecting benign, pre-malignant and malignant lesions. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to evaluate the accuracy of NBI in the diagnosis of various mucosal lesions of head and neck region and its correlation with the histopat

Magnifying endoscopy with narrow-band imaging for diagnosis of subtype of gastric intestinal metaplasia.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Patients with incomplete gastric intestinal metaplasia (GIM) have a higher risk of gastric cancer (GC) than those with complete GIM. We aimed to clarify whether micromucosal patterns of GIM in magnifying endoscopy with narrow-band imaging (M-NBI) were useful for diagnosis of incomplete GIM. METHODS: We enrolled patients with a history of endoscopic resection of GC or detailed inspection for suspicious or definite GC. The antrum greater curvature and corpus lesser curvature were regions of interest. Areas with endoscopic findings of light blue crest and/or white opaque subs

Beige mucosa observable under narrow-band imaging indicates the active sites of eosinophilic esophagitis.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: The majority of patients with eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) are likely to have observable features under narrow-band imaging, namely beige mucosa. However, the histological features and clinical implications of beige mucosa have not been investigated. The aim of this study was to determine whether beige mucosa could serve as an endoscopic marker for predicting active inflammatory sites of EoE. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed both the narrow-band images and biopsied specimens of 77 esophageal lesions from 35 consecutive patients with EoE. We divided these specimens in

Role of Narrow Band Imaging in Laryngeal Lesions: A Prospective Study from Southern India.

INTRODUCTION: Road traffic crashes constitute a considerable public health burden and represent the eighth leading cause of death and tenth leading cause of disability adjusted life years (DALYs) globally. However, very little is known about the extent, causes and impact of crashes in low- and middle-income countries including those in the Pacific. This lack of data is particularly true for the Solomon Islands. METHODS: The study is a retrospective record review of a pre-existing, de-identified dataset. A standardised trauma form is completed for all patients presenting to the orthopaedic dep

Does narrow band imaging improve preoperative detection of glottic malignancy? A matched comparison study.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: The primary suspicion for glottic malignancy during office laryngoendoscopy is based on lesion appearance. Previous studies investigating laryngeal use of narrow band imaging (NBI) are mostly descriptive. The additive value of NBI relative to white light (WL) requires further investigation. STUDY DESIGN: Observational matched study. METHODS: NBI was compared with WL images of 45 vocal fold lesions suspected for malignancy (21 carcinoma, 22 dysplasia, two benign). All images were presented randomly and evaluated by six independent otolaryngology specialists. The observe…

Nasal mucosa narrow band imaging in granulomatosis with polyangiitis (Wegener granulomatosis): A preliminary study.

BACKGROUND: Narrow band imaging (NBI) endoscopy is a technique that allows for real-time visualization of mucosal and submucosal vascular patterns. OBJECTIVE: Because granulomatosis with polyangiitis (GPA) (Wegener granulomatosis) is an autoimmune disease defined by vascular inflammation, we examined patients with GPA and with NBI to evaluate whether disease-specific mucosal vascular patterns were present. To the best of our knowledge, the use of NBI endoscopy for assessment of an immune system disease such as GPA has never been previously attempted. METHODS: We conducted a prospective obser…

Case of pharyngeal cancer not detected during preoperative transoral endoscopy with narrow band imaging.

We herein report a case of pharyngeal cancer that was not detected during preoperative transoral endoscopy with narrow band imaging (NBI). A 61-year-old female was referred to our hospital for further evaluation of a pharyngeal lesion. Endoscopy revealed a small, elevated lesion, approximately 7 mm in size, at the right pyriform sinus. We performed endoscopic resection to remove this lesion under general anesthesia based on the biopsy results. Intraoperatively, we detected another tumor in the left oropharyngeal wall with Lugol staining after insertion of a curved laryngoscope. Although this l…

Clinicopathological features of minute pharyngeal lesions diagnosed by narrow-band imaging endoscopy and biopsy.

AIM: To evaluate the utility of magnified narrow-band imaging (NBI) endoscopy for diagnosing and treating minute pharyngeal neoplasia. METHODS: Magnified NBI gastrointestinal examinations were performed by the first author. A magnification hood was attached to the tip of the endoscope for quick focusing. Most of the examinations were performed under sedation. Magnified NBI examinations were performed for all of the pharyngeal lesions that had noticeable brownish areas under unmagnified NBI observation, and an intrapapillary capillary loop (IPCL) classification was made. A total of 93 consecut

Usefulness of magnifying narrow-band imaging endoscopy in the Helicobacter pylori-related chronic gastritis.

Combining the narrow-band imaging (NBI) system and magnifying endoscopy allows simple and clear visualization of microscopic structures of the superficial mucosa and its capillary patterns, which may be useful for precise endoscopic diagnosis in the gastrointestinal tract, being more closely to histopathological diagnosis. In the non-neoplastic gastric mucosa, there have been reports showing a potential usefulness of magnifying NBI for the diagnosis of Helicobacter pylori infection, degree of histological gastritis, and intestinal metaplasia. We have shown that magnifying NBI appearances in th

Digital colposcopy for the diagnosis of cervical adenocarcinoma using a narrow band imaging system.

INTRODUCTION: Although the colposcopic features of cervical glandular disease and cervical adenocarcinoma are not widely well known, unique microvascular patterns are reportedly useful for identifying such diseases. The narrow band imaging (NBI) system used in endoscopy can be used to obtain high-contrast vascular images. Therefore, we examined the utility of NBI colposcopy and compared the results with those of conventional colposcopy. METHODS: Twenty-one patients with adenocarcinoma in situ or early invasive adenocarcinomas were examined using digital NBI colposcopy, and the photo records w…

New cystoscopic diagnosis for interstitial cystitis/painful bladder syndrome using narrow-band imaging system.

OBJECTIVES: Diagnosing the bladder lesions associated with interstitial cystitis/painful bladder syndrome (IC/PBS) is sometimes difficult for general urologists. We therefore aimed to develop an IC/PBS diagnosis method using a cystoscope with a narrow-band imaging (NBI) system that can detect mucosal angiogenic lesions. METHODS: Fifty-two subjects suspected of having IC between October 2006 and June 2007 were included in this study. There were 49 women and three men, ranging in age from 19 through 85 with an average age of 59. First, conventional cystoscopy under spinal anesthesia was perform

Role of narrow band imaging in assessing bronchial mucosal hypervascularization in COVID-19 patients.

BACKGROUND: SARS-CoV-2 virus which targets the lung vasculature is supposed to affect both pulmonary and bronchial arteries. This study evaluated the tracheobronchial vascularization density observed with narrow band imaging (NBI) in patients hospitalized for COVID-19 pneumonia. To determine if the observed changes were specific of COVID-19 patients, the procedure was also performed in non-COVID-19 patients. METHODS: Thirty patients included in this monocentric, prospective study underwent videobronchoscopy using both white light and NBI: 10 with a COVID-19 infection, 10 with a non-COVID-19 p…
