Endometriosis MR mimickers: T2-hypointense lesions.

Endometriosis is a common crippling disease in women of reproductive age. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is considered the cornerstone radiological technique for both the diagnosis and management of endometriosis. While its sensitivity, especially in deep infiltrating endometriosis, is superior to that of ultrasonography, many sources of false-positive results exist, leading to a lack of specificity. Hypointense lesions or pseudo-lesions on T2-weighted images include anatomical variants, fibrous connective tissues, benign and malignant tumors, feces, surgical materials, and post treatment sc

Phosphaturic Mesenchymal Tumors in the Head and Neck Demonstrate a Broad Clinical and Morphologic Spectrum.

Phosphaturic mesenchymal tumour (PMT) is a rare tumour that occurs in bone or soft tissue and is associated with production of fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23) leading to tumor-induced osteomalacia. We report three cases of PMT involving the head and neck that highlight the broad spectrum of clinical and histologic features of PMT. One of these lesions from the hard palate demonstrated an admixture of epithelial and mesenchymal elements, a feature that can pose a diagnostic challenge. The diagnostic utility of immunohistochemistry including FGF23, somatostatin receptor 2A, SATB2, ERG and CD

Extraskeletal myxoid chondrosarcoma: Clinical features and overall survival.

INTRODUCTION: Extraskeletal myxoid chondrosarcoma is a rare form of soft tissue sarcoma characterized by a unique chromosomal translocation involving the NR4A3 gene on chromosome 9. It is most frequently diagnosed in the proximal extremities of older adult males and is notable for its insidious growth with predilection for local recurrence and metastasis. Currently, extraskeletal myxoid chondrosarcoma is managed with wide resection, with recent investigations supporting the utility of adjuvant radiation and novel chemotherapeutic strategies. METHODOLOGY: A retrospective study was performed wi

Sialadenoma papilliferum of the bronchus: a rare tumour of salivary gland origin.

Sialadenoma papilliferum is a benign salivary tumour which rarely occurs in the bronchial tree. Up to now, only four cases of pulmonary papillary sialadenoma have been reported in the literature. We discuss the case of a male patient with an accidental finding of a middle lobe nodule. The patient underwent a minimally invasive anatomical resection of the lobe to remove the lesion; the postoperative course was regular, and he was healthy at the last follow-up.

Tumour-induced Osteomalacia Secondary to Intracranial Tumours - Report of 2 Cases.

Tumor induced osteomalacia (TIO) is a paraneoplastic syndrome which is mostly caused by a phosphaturic mesenchymal tumour mixed connective tissue variant (PMTMCT). These tumours do not have any specific site predilection but their presence in cranial compartment is very rare. Two cases of TIO secondary to phosphaturic mesenchymal tumour at the skull base are described ahead, one of which was in the posterior fossa and the other in middle cranial fossa. Early diagnosis and complete excision of PMT is essential in preventing morbidity secondary to osteomalacia. This case report stands distinct i

Intraoral benign mesenchymoma: a report of 10 cases and review of the literature.

A benign mesenchymoma is an unencapsulated soft tissue neoplasm composed of 2 or more mature mesenchymal tissues not normally associated with each other, excluding fibrous connective tissue. No single mesenchymal tissue should predominate with respect to the other mesenchymal elements. Ten well-documented examples of intraoral benign mesenchymoma have been reported in the English language literature. The purpose of this report is to document 10 additional cases and to review the clinicopathologic characteristics of this uncommon tumor.

[MALIGNANT NEOPLASMS OF THE REPRODUCTIVE SYSTEM IN MEN AND THEIR CONNECTION WITH THE HUMAN PAPILLOMAVIRUS. (REVIEW)].

The issue of malignant tumor occurrence associated with viral infections is a particularly significant one. Approximately 15-20% of tumors have some connection with various viral infections. An extensive amount of data has been gathered on neoplasms of the female reproductive system linked to the human papillomavirus (HPV). However, the connection between papillomavirus infection and malignant neoplasms in the male reproductive system requires further investigation. The aim of this review is to examine the association between malignant neoplasms of the male reproductive system and HPV, as well

Immunohistochemistry of soft tissue tumours: a review.

The diagnosis and classification of soft tissue sarcomas can pose difficult problems for the histopathologist. Many sarcomas are too poorly differentiated to exhibit morphological features specific enough to define their histogenesis. Using the immunoperoxidase technique with commercially available antisera as a routine adjunct to other diagnostic aids, it is possible to arrive at more accurate diagnoses on which treatment protocols can be based. In addition a better understanding of mesenchymal neoplasms and their origins can be obtained by functional immunohistochemical studies.

[Cytoplasm antibodies of polynuclear neutrophils in Wegener's granulomatosis and systemic vasculitis].

In retrospective and prospective studies the sera of 442 patients recruited from an Internal Medicine department were examined by acetone indirect immunofluorescence and immunoblot in search of anti-neutrophil cytoplasm antibodies (ANCA). Twenty-three patients had Wegener's granulomatosis, and 419 had various control diseases including connective tissue diseases, vasculitis and granulomatosis. The sera from 100 healthy blood donors were used as controls. Among the 23 patients with generalized (n = 15) or localized (n = 8) Wegener's granulomatosis (active in 21/23), the indirect immunofluoresce

Rearrangement of chromosome bands 12q14~15 causing HMGA2-SOX5 gene fusion and HMGA2 expression in extraskeletal osteochondroma.

We describe two cases of extraskeletal osteochondroma in which chromosome bands 12q14~15 were visibly rearranged through a pericentric inv(12). Molecular analysis of the first tumor showed that both transcript 1 (NM_003483) and transcript 2 (NM_003484) of HMGA2 were expressed. In the second tumor, the inv(12) detected by karyotyping had resulted in an HMGA2-SOX5 fusion transcript in which exons 1-3 of HMGA2 were fused with a sequence from intron 1 of SOX5. The observed pattern is similar to rearrangements of HMGA2 found in several other benign mesenchymal tumors, i.e., disruption of the HMGA2

Warthin's Tumour: A Case Report and Review on Pathogenesis and its Histological Subtypes.

Warthin's tumour/ Papillary cystadenoma lymphomatosum (PCL) constitutes a minority of salivary gland neoplasms and it is a monomorphic adenoma which primarily involves the parotid gland. Warthin's tumour shows multiple cysts that have numerous papillations covered by bilayered columnar and basaloid oncocytic epithelium. The connective tissue portion shows proliferation of follicle- containing lymphoid tissue which necessitates careful distinction for diagnosis. Although, Warthin's tumour presents as a clinically benign, slow-growing, usually asymptomatic lesion with low rates of recurrences an

Small cell carcinoma of the gallbladder: a clinicopathologic, immunohistochemical, and molecular pathology study of 12 cases.

Small cell carcinomas of the gallbladder are unusual neoplasms that have been characterized only recently. The authors describe the clinical, histopathologic, immunohistochemical, and molecular features of 12 small cell carcinomas of the gallbladder. The mean age at diagnosis was 69 years, and the male-to-female ratio was 5:7. The neoplasms had an average size of 3 cm, and 90% showed invasion of the muscularis propria and perimuscular connective tissue. Seventy-five percent of the carcinomas had metastasized or extended locally beyond the gallbladder at surgery. Survival was uniformly poor, wi

Metastatic angioinvasive lymphoma (lymphomatoid granulomatosis) in a cat.

A subcutaneous mass removed from the right rear leg of a 17-year-old, spayed, female Domestic Shorthair cat was characterized histopathologically by granulomatous inflammation, sheets of large atypical lymphoid cells, and necrosis. The walls of the small and medium caliber blood vessels were invaded transmurally by atypical lymphoid cells. A diagnosis of angioinvasive lymphoma (AIL), or lymphomatoid granulomatosis, was made based on histopathologic findings. The cat was euthanized 2 months later because of recurrence of the mass and elevated serum alanine aminotransferase activity, and a necro

The place of 18F FDG PET/CT in the management of patients with eosinophilic fasciitis: a case report.

Eosinophilic fasciitis is a rare connective tissue disease with a clinical presentation of scleroderma-like disease. We report a case of a 36-year-old female patient with a 6-month history of progressive stiffness involving her forearms and legs with joint pain. Laboratory examinations showed hypereosinophilia and elevated C-reactive protein. 18F FDG PET/CT showed diffuse and symmetrical increased uptake in the fasciae of the upper and lower limbs, sparing both muscles and fat tissues. Guided biopsy and histologic examination confirmed the diagnosis of eosinophilic fasciitis. 18F FDG PET/CT is
