Dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans (DFSP) is a locally malignant neoplasm derived from fibrous tissue. Similar picture of such lesions to malignant tumors as well as to benign changes creates a risk of too gentle treatment and consequently of recurrence and malignant transformation of the lesions with possible remote metastases. Therefore accurate diagnosis and aggressive surgical treatment can prevent the recurrence of the tumor. Authors of the study present case report of 49-year-old woman with DFSP of vulvar area.

Exposure of rat embryos to 3,3-dimethyl-1-phenyltriazene (DMPT) results in numerous malformations, but the urogenital system is not affected. In contrast, exposure of rat fetuses to DMPT has been reported to result in renal neoplasms, which were not further classified. To better understand this discrepancy in organotropism of the teratogenic and transplacental carcinogenic processes, the present study was undertaken to characterize the neoplasms induced in rat fetuses exposed to DMPT in utero. Renal neoplasms and persistent mesenchyme were observed in 19.2 and 11.5%, respectively, of the offsp

'Intracranial mesenchymal tumor, FET-CREB fusion-positive' occurs primarily in children and young adults and has previously been termed intracranial angiomatoid fibrous histiocytoma (AFH) or intracranial myxoid mesenchymal tumor (IMMT). Here we performed genome-wide DNA methylation array profiling of 20 primary intracranial mesenchymal tumors with FET-CREB fusion to further study their ontology. These tumors resolved into two distinct epigenetic subgroups that were both divergent from all other analyzed intracranial neoplasms and soft tissue sarcomas, including meningioma, clear cell sarcoma o

Angiomatoid fibrous histiocytoma (AFH) is a rare soft tissue tumor of uncertain differentiation with low metastatic potential, most commonly occurring in children, adolescents, and young adults, involving extremities. Due to its rare nature and diverse presentation, both clinically and morphologically, it is often misdiagnosed. It becomes important to correctly diagnose this lesion, given its distinct therapeutic implications. Here, we present the clinical, radiologic, and pathologic findings of two rare cases of AFH. Since AFH is a rare soft tissue tumor with low malignant potential, both pat

There is a wide spectrum of benign and malignant mesenchymal neoplasms of the prostate, which account for less than 1% of all prostatic tumors. These include distinctive tumors that arise from the specialized prostatic stroma and site-agnostic neoplasms such as smooth muscle tumors, fibrous or myofibroblastic neoplasms, neurogenic tumors, vascular tumors, and a plethora of sarcomas. Select tumors show classic sites of origin within the prostate. While stromal tumors of uncertain malignant potential (STUMPs) commonly involve the peripheral zone at the prostate base, leiomyomas typically origina

Ossifying fibroma is a rare benign osteogenic neoplasm arising from undifferentiated cells of the periodontal ligament and with a potential to form fibrous tissue, cementum and bone, which is usually in molar area of the mandible, predominantly seen in young girls. And ossifying fibroma poses diagnostic and therapeutic difficulties due to their clinical, radiological and histological variabilities. We report a rare case of an 18 year old girl with cystic degeneration of ossifying fibroma in maxilla which is an uncommon site of occurrence.

The authors argue that CT is superior to other imaging techniques for the examination of the bones and soft tissues of the chest wall. They also note the importance of CT in planning therapy for lesions involving these structures. In support of these theses they present computed tomograms showing 26 different types of lesion involving the chest wall ranging from sternal fracture to malignant fibrous histiocytoma. Malignant neoplasms involving the chest wall by metastasis or direct extension from the breast, lung or mediastinum are emphasized.

Primary aneurysmal bone cyst (ABC) is a cystic bone neoplasm characterized by disease-defining gene fusions involving the USP6/Tre2 gene. The literature describing gnathic ABC is limited. This case report describes a 27-year-old man presenting with a long-standing left-sided facial asymmetry. Multi-detector computed tomography imaging demonstrated a large expansile lesion positioned within the left condylar head. The lesion was biopsied and resected. The specimen showed a giant cell-rich cystic neoplasm, with fibrous tissue lined by multinucleated giant cells. Next-generation sequencing confir

Malignant fibrous histiocytoma, a pleomorphic sarcoma, represents the most common soft tissue sarcoma of late adult life. Approximately 15 per cent of the cases of malignant fibrous histiocytoma arise within the abdominal cavity or retroperitoneum. Although tumors in this series arose in many different sites, their proximity to the kidney necessitated a nephrectomy in 44 per cent of the cases (12 of 27). In 3 cases calcification was noted, which varied from a few small speckled areas to extensive large, coarse densities. The masses tended to compress or displace adjacent structures and vessels

More recent techniques to characterize the genetic profile of soft-tissue tumors include the use of gene arrays. Using this technique, Apolipoprotein D (Apo D), a 33-kDa glycoprotein component of high-density lipoprotein, has been found to be highly expressed in dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans. To corroborate these results, we sought to ascertain the utility of Apo D by investigating its sensitivity and specificity in a variety of CD34-positive and CD34-negative cutaneous neoplasms including superficial acral fibromyxoma, sclerotic fibromas, and cellular dermatofibromas. Of interest, we found

Recent studies of Class II histocompatibility antigen expression in bone and soft tissue sarcomas have suggested that malignant fibrous histiocytoma (MFH) may express HLA-DR, whereas histologically similar pleomorphic, epithelioid, and spindle cell malignant neoplasms generally do not. To test whether these observations are reproducible in the differential diagnosis of soft tissue sarcomas, anti-HLA-DR antibodies LK8D3 and LN3 were applied to formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded sections of MFH, neurofibrosarcoma (NFS), leiomyosarcoma (LMS), synovial sarcoma (SS), fibrosarcoma (FS), angiosarcoma

Solitary fibrous tumor of the pleura is a neoplasm arising from mesenchymal tissue, which may cause dyspnea and cough. Computed tomography in a 72-year-old woman, who had been diagnosed with a 3-cm mass in the left upper lung 24 years previously, identified 15- and 10-cm tumors, with complete collapse of the lingula and lower lobe. The tumors were successfully excised with partial lung resection, and the collapsed lung was preserved. There was no recurrence or atelectasis at 4 years postoperatively.

Malignant fibrous histiocytoma (MFH) is a frequently occurring soft tissue tumour with aggressive biological behaviour. Primary MFH of the spleen, however, is an exceedingly rare occurrence. Herein, we report a case of such a neoplasm in a 66-year-old female. The tumour was well localised within the spleen and the patient remains alive and well 34 months after splenectomy without any adjuvant therapy. A brief discussion and review of the few cases of primary splenic MFH previously reported in the English language literature is included.

Spindle cell tumors that arise in or metastasize to the pleura must be thoroughly evaluated to arrive at a definitive diagnosis. Malignant mesothelioma is the most common tumor arising in the pleura, but metastatic tumors to the pleura occur more frequently. Additionally, many tumors arising in the lung and surrounding tissues involve the pleura. It is crucial to arrive at a correct diagnosis since many of these neoplasms show different prognoses and require varying treatment modalities. Sarcomatoid malignant mesothelioma is a rare tumor that arises in the pleura, and can be confused with nume

Solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) is an uncommon mesenchymal neoplasm that arises primarily from the pleura, but recognized also in other tissues. SFT in the thyroid gland is extremely rare. Here we presented the second reported SFT arising in an intrathoracic goiter. The88-year-old woman was referred with a huge goiter involving upper mediastinum accompanied by airway obstruction and tracheostomy. The patient underwent a left subtotal thyroidectomy, which revealed a SFT. No recurrence was noted during 3 years of follow-up.

In order to define the histopathological criteria for the diagnosis of malignant neoplasm involving pleura, we studied 11 pleurectomy specimens containing undoubted malignant cells. The most important feature for a diagnosis of malignancy was the pattern of neoplastic infiltration of the fibrous sub-pleural tissue. These criteria were subsequently applied in a re-analysis of 76 pleural needle biopsies with a diagnosis of cancer. The patterns most frequently seen were a multi-pronged growth of at least four clusters of atypical cells in the fibrous sub-pleural tissue, a solid pattern with a lar

BACKGROUND: The cytologic accuracy in assessing malignancy in papillary breast neoplasms (PBNs) is controversial. This is further complicated by overlapping features observed in other breast lesions that produce papillary-like tissue fragments.
METHODS: The authors reviewed 22 fine-needle aspirates (FNAs) from histologically proven papillary neoplasms: papillary carcinoma (PCA; 10 aspirates) and intraductal papilloma (IDP; 12 aspirates). They also reviewed 8 FNAs in which a papillary neoplasm was suggested by cytology but not confirmed by follow-up biopsy: fibroadenoma (6), mucinous carcinoma
