Choroid plexus tumors in the breast cancer-sarcoma syndrome.

Choroid plexus neoplasms are rare epithelial tumors of the central nervous system. A carcinoma of the choroid plexus occurred in a child from a family with the breast cancer-sarcoma syndrome (Li-Fraumeni or SBLA syndrome), an inherited condition characterized by the development of diverse neoplasms (sarcoma, breast cancer, brain tumors, leukemia, adrenal cortical carcinoma, and others). Choroid plexus carcinomas were identified in two kindreds previously reported with the syndrome. The literature contains reports of choroid plexus neoplasms occurring in families and in individuals with multipl

Synchronous Occurrence of Triple-Negative Breast Cancer and Malignant Melanoma.

In people with cancer, multiple primary malignant neoplasms (MPMNs) are not unusual, and they may be caused by risk factors such as genetics, viral infection, smoking, environmental factors, or treatment-related variables. The frequency of MPMNs occurring in the same or separate organ systems is between 2% and 17%. The 5-year breast cancer survivors have been found to have around 3.6% chance of acquiring another neoplasm. In this case report, we present a very rare simultaneous occurrence of two highly malignant tumors - triple-negative breast cancer and cutaneous melanoma. We performed geneti

A Herald of Plasma Cell Myeloma: A Report of Malignant Plasma Cells Identified in Parathyroid Adenoma and a Review of Non-parathyroid Malignancies in Parathyroid Glands.

Involvement of the parathyroid glands by non-parathyroid neoplasia is an infrequent event. Rare cases of metastases to the parathyroid gland have been reported in parathyroidectomies and autopsies of patients with known solid or hematopoietic malignancies. Here, we present a case of atypical clonal plasma cells incidentally identified within a parathyroid adenoma resected for hyperparathyroidism and hypercalcemia, which served as the sentinel event for a subsequent diagnosis of plasma cell myeloma. To our knowledge, this is the only reported case of a hematopoietic malignancy involving a parat

Neoplasms with splenic involvement in dogs at necropsy: Macroscopic presentation patterns in 262 cases.

Splenic neoplasm is frequently diagnosed in dogs and can present as nodules or splenomegaly. This retrospective study aimed to characterize the gross features of splenic neoplasm in dogs at necropsy in order to recognize possible presentation patterns for each diagnosis. In a 10.5-year period, 1,187 dogs underwent necropsy with a confirmed diagnosis of neoplasia, of which 262 had splenic neoplasm. Three dogs had two distinct concurrent tumours, totalling 265 splenic neoplasms. Of these, non-angiogenic tumours were diagnosed in 217 cases (81.9 %) and angiogenic neoplasms were diagnosed in 48 ca

Report of two cases of quintuple primary malignancies and review of the literature.

Multiple primary malignant neoplasms (MPMN) are not uncommon, however, finding more than three primary malignancies in one individual is unusual. Surviving five malignancies is considered exceptional. Two patients surviving five primary malignant neoplasms for 12 and 18 years are reported: a 55-year-old woman with a squamous cell carcinoma of the larynx, two carcinomas of the breast, a carcinoma of the kidney and an adenocarcinoma of the colon, and a 75-year-old woman with a sarcoma of the myometrium, a carcinoma of the thyroid, an adenocarcinoma of the rectum, a leiomyosarcoma of the colon an

Simultaneous aortic body tumor and pulmonary histiocytic sarcoma in a flat-coated retriever.

A case of multiple primary tumors observed in the heart base and in the lung of a 7-year-old intact female, flat-coated retriever was reported. Morphological differences between both tumors and detailed immunohistochemical study revealed that the cardiac neoplasm was as a malignant aortic body tumor and the lung tumor was a pulmonary histiocytic sarcoma. The occurrence of aortic body tumor with other primary neoplasms has been previously reported in animals suggesting that this might be a common presentation in dogs.

A clinical report and analysis of metachronous multiple primary cancers occurred in four sites.

PURPOSE: This case report describes a rare occurrence of quadruple primary malignancies-specifically, bilateral primary breast cancer, ovarian cancer, and pleomorphic malignant fibrous histiocytoma/undifferentiated high-grade pleomorphic sarcoma-and explores its potential association with hereditary tumor syndromes. METHODS: We conducted a detailed clinical and histopathological analysis of the case. Repeated imaging and pathological examinations were performed to confirm the diagnosis of each primary malignancy. RESULTS: The patient was diagnosed with four distinct primary tumors, and patho

Incidental synchronous intrathyroidal parathyroid carcinomas and papillary thyroid microcarcinoma with compressive neck mass and primary hyperparathyroidism: case report and literature review.

BACKGROUND: Parathyroid carcinoma (PC) is a rare malignancy, often diagnosed incidentally through postoperative pathological examination. The occurrence of nodular goiter, intrathyroidal parathyroid carcinoma, contralateral parathyroid adenoma (PA), and papillary thyroid microcarcinoma (PTMC) is extremely uncommon, which prompted us to report our case experience. CASE PRESENTATION: We describe a 67-year-old male who presented with a cervical mass causing tracheal compression, which prompted him to seek medical advice. Based on preoperative auxiliary examination results from color Doppler ultr

Head and neck cancer with synchronous nodules of the lung as a diagnostic and therapeutic challenge - A systematic review.

Head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) often presents with synchronous nodules of the lung (sNL), which may be benign nodules, second primary malignancies or metastases of HNSCC. We sought to gain an insight into the incidence of sNL and synchronous second primary of the lung (sSPML) in HNSCC patients and current opinions on useful diagnostic and therapeutic approaches. We conducted a systematic search of the PubMed database for articles that reported the simultaneous detection of HNSCC and sNL/sPML, within the timeframe of diagnosis and staging. Only studies involving humans were inclu

Multiple oral cancer development-Clinico-pathological features in the Hong Kong population.

BACKGROUND: Multiple squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) development within the oral cavity is an important consequence of mucosal field cancerization. We have previously profiled contemporaneous demographics and confirmed a rising incidence of oral cancer within the Hong Kong population. In this further study, we sought to characterize the presenting clinico-pathological features and clinical outcome consequent upon multiple primary tumour (PT) development. METHODS: Having accessed the Hong Kong Hospital Authority (HA) database to identify new cases of oral SCC diagnosed during an 18-year period (

Association of multiple primary melanomas with malignancy risk: A population-based analysis of entries from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results program database during 1973-2014.

BACKGROUND: Genetic and environmental risk factors have been associated with the development of multiple primary melanomas (MPMs). We hypothesized that individuals with MPMs might have an increased incidence of internal malignancies. OBJECTIVE: To identify the risk for subsequent malignancies in MPM patients. METHODS: Multiple primary standardized incidence ratios were analyzed for individuals with ≥1, ≥2 and ≥3 primary melanomas (PMs) recorded in the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results database during 1973-2014. RESULTS: We identified 223,799 individuals with ≥1 PM, 19,709 with ≥2

Diagnosis and management of pediatric endocrine neoplasms.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To guide the clinician in the diagnostic evaluation of endocrine neoplasms, to distinguish between benign and malignant and determine when surgical referral is indicated. RECENT FINDINGS: Thyroid nodules are uncommon but malignant in as many as 27% of patients. Fine needle aspiration should be considered in adolescents, in which accuracy is as high as 90%; surgical resection should be undertaken in all preadolescents (<13 years) with a thyroid nodule. Prognosis for most primary thyroid malignancies is favorable. Primary hyperparathyroidism is rare and due to an adenoma in u

Primary digestive melanoma in association with tubular adenoma: a case report illustrating the distinction from metastatic colonic melanoma.

We report here an exceptional pattern of atypical lentiginous melanocytic proliferation within an adenoma, leading to focal lamina propria infiltration and pulmonary metastasis, which was considered as primary colonic mucosal melanoma (MM) in a Caucasian patient. Such case illustrates the diagnosis criteria required to differentiate primary MM from colonic metastasis of melanoma, including the absence of past history of other primary melanoma, a unique colonic and abdominal lesion with predominant features of in situ lentiginous MM and a very focal and unique invasive area without other digest

Synchronous Second Primary Cancers of Hypopharyngeal Carcinoma in the Image-Enhanced Endoscopy Era.

OBJECTIVES: To explore the prevalence of hypopharyngeal carcinoma (HPC) with synchronous second primary malignancies (Syn-SPMs), their impact on clinical outcomes, and associated risk factors in the image-enhanced endoscopy era. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 673 patients newly diagnosed with HPC at our cancer center between 2009 and 2019. The patients were divided into three groups: (a) no second primary malignancies (N-SPMs, n = 533); (b) synchronous carcinoma in situ (Syn-Tis, n = 60); (c) synchronous invasive tumors (Syn-invasive, n = 80). Propensity score matching was

[Synchronous pleomorphic adenoma and Warthin tumour in the ipsilateral parotid gland:a case report].

Multiple primary tumors of the parotid gland refer to two or more distinct primary tumors originating within the parotid gland. They can be classified as bilateral or unilateral based on location, and synchronous or metachronous based on the timing of occurrence. The coexistence of two histologically distinct tumor types within the ipsilateral parotid gland is clinically exceedingly rare. This report presents a unique case of synchronous Warthin tumor and pleomorphic adenoma occurring within the ipsilateral parotid gland, accompanied by a comprehensive literature review.

Bleeding per rectum during induction chemotherapy: Looking beyond the leukaemia - 2 case reports and review of literature.

Synchronous malignancies involving acute leukemia and a solid organ are rare. Bleeding per rectum is a common manifestation of acute leukemia during induction chemotherapy and might mask the presence of synchronous colorectal adenocarcinoma (CRC). Here we present two rare cases of acute leukemia with synchronous CRC. We also review previously reported synchronous malignancies to investigate demographics, diagnosis, and treatment modalities. Management of these cases requires a multispecialty approach.
