BACKGROUND: S100A6, a calcium-binding protein in the S100 family, has been observed in melanocytic nevi, neural tumors, fibrohistiocytic tumors and is overexpressed in melanoma. Previous studies reported S100A6 expression in atypical fibroxanthomas (AFX) but not in a small number of desmoplastic melanomas (DM). Limited data on S100A6 expression in cutaneous epithelial tumors exists in the literature. The goal of this study was to determine the specificity and sensitivity of S100A6 protein in a spectrum of cutaneous mesenchymal or epithelial tumors.
METHODS: Tissue microarrays of cutaneous epi

Spontaneous neoplasia of the intestinal tract in sentinel and moribund zebrafish Danio rerio is common in some zebrafish facilities. We previously classified these tumors as adenocarcinoma, small-cell carcinoma, or carcinoma otherwise unspecified based on histomorphologic characteristics. Based on histological presentation, the primary differential diagnosis for the intestinal carcinomas was tumor of neuroendocrine cells (e.g. carcinoids). To further characterize the phenotype of the neoplastic cells, select tissue sections were stained with a panel of antibodies directed toward human epitheli

BACKGROUND: Sebaceous lymphadenoma of the parotid gland is a rare benign neoplasm. This is the first reported case of fine needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) findings for sebaceous lymphadenoma of the parotid gland.
CASE: A 60-year-old male presented with painless, bilateral parotid swelling noted for 5 months. The swelling was more pronounced on the right. Examination revealed bilaterally prominent parotid glands with diffuse firmness but no discrete masses. There was no evidence of facial nerve dysfunction. Laboratory evaluation was negative for infectious and autoimmune etiologies. Magnetic r

The female perineum is a diamond-shaped structure inferior to the pelvic diaphragm and between the symphysis pubis and coccyx. The perineum is divided into the anterior urogenital triangle and the posterior anal triangle; the vulva represents the external genitalia. A wide array of diseases affect the female perineum in adults. Vulvar trauma, infection (including Fournier gangrene), developmental lesions, and thrombophlebitis can be investigated with various imaging modalities; vulvar malignancies are best imaged with magnetic resonance (MR) imaging to identify local-regional extent of disease

Adrenal collision tumors refer to coexistence of two adjacent, but histologically distinct, neoplasms involving the adrenal gland without histologic admixture at the interface. Myelolipoma is a rare but benign neoplasm. As its name implies, displays both mature adipose tissue and hematopoietic elements. These are usually unilateral and asymptomatic. Schwannomas, tumors derived from the peripheral nerve sheath, are also uncommon lesions in the adrenal gland. Here, we present a rare case of a 65-year-old male with clinical history of abdominal aortic aneurysm who was found to have a 13-cm "incid

Sprague-Dawley rats are amongst the most widely used animals in biomedical research and malignant lymphoma has long been known to be a frequent neoplasm in these animals. A 9-month-old male control Sprague-Dawley rat from a toxicity study showed gelatinous material in the cranial cavity and dark, thickened cerebral meninges at necropsy. At microscopic evaluation of the temporal bone, neoplastic lymphocytes were seen invading several structures of the middle ear. The neoplastic cells appeared to extend from the marrow of the temporal bone, covered the dorsal part of the tympanic cavity wall, an

The clinical, pathologic, and imaging characteristics of clival chordomas in 14 patients who underwent magnetic resonance examinations were evaluated. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was compared with skull series, tomography, computed tomography (CT), and magnification angiography in the diagnosis of clival chordomas. Although all examinations were highly sensitive for the detection of clival chordomas, MRI was the best single study because of its ability to image in orthogonal planes, its excellent soft-tissue contrast, and its demonstration of the relationship between the neoplasm and regi

Superficial/cutaneous malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor is a rare soft tissue neoplasm that shares morphological, immunohistochemical, and molecular features with spindle/desmoplastic melanoma. We aimed to identify a methylome signature to distinguish these two entities. We analyzed 15 cases of spindle/desmoplastic melanoma and 15 cases of cutaneous malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor in 23 men and 7 women. DNA from formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissues was extracted and processed using the Illumina Infinium Methylation EPIC array interrogating 866,562 CpG sites. Using a home-gro

Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) constitute the largest category of primary nonepithelial neoplasms of the stomach and small bowel. They represent about 1-2% from all neoplasms of the digestive tract. They occur most commonly in the stomach and small bowel, but small series of comparable tumors have also been reported in all the other parts of the tubular gastrointestinal tract, including esophagus, colon, rectum and anus. They can also involve omentum, mesentery, uterus, retroperitoneum, mesocolon and soft tissues. Originally recognized in 1960 by Martin et. al. as a distinctive type o

A rapidly growing giant-cell neoplasm arising in the sphenoid sinus of a 26-year-old man is reported. The patient's only initial symptoms were severe headaches and left sixth-nerve palsy. Computerized tomography of the brain showed extensive tumor infiltration of the bony structures and soft tissues of the base of the skull. A transsphenoidal surgical procedure proved unsuccessful in removing the tumor. Histologic examination revealed a proliferation of osteoclast-type giant cells against a background of highly atypical mononuclear cells, raising the question of malignancy. The differential di

The injection of blastomogenic agents--ENM, MNM, DMBA and BP in rabbits during the last third of the pregnancy period would induce in their offspring tumors mostly of peripheral nerves and kidney. Ethylnitrosourea shows the highest blastomogenic activity in rabbits than other carcinogens; it also exhibits a rather pronounced neurotropic blastomogenic effect. Relative tropism to different organs and tissues characteristic of carcinogens in their effect on the adult organism is not always manifested in transplacental blastomogenesis. Transplacental tumors induced in rabbits are of special import

Epithelioid sarcoma is a rare distinctive soft tissue neoplasm with a predilection for the distal parts of the extremities. While epithelioid sarcoma presenting as median nerve palsy or carpal tunnel syndrome has been described, epithelioid sarcoma presenting as cystic lung metastases has not been reported. This article reports a case of a man who presented with spontaneous recurrent pneumothoraces and was found to have bilateral cystic lung disease, which was ultimately diagnosed as epithelioid sarcoma with cystic lung metastases. He underwent left arm amputation, chemotherapy and radiation,

BACKGROUND: Neurofibromas (NF) are benign tumors of the peripheral nerves that are composed of Schwann cells, perineural-like cells and fibroblasts. The differential diagnosis for a solitary intraneural variant of neurofibroma arising in the floor of the mouth is broad and includes a submandibular gland neoplasm and adenopathy, among others. The intraoral approach is the best choice for a medium-sized lesion.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report a rare case of a solitary neurofibroma of the floor of the mouth in a 31-year-old male. The patient consulted the dental emergency department for acute pain

BACKGROUND: Lipomas are common benign soft tissue neoplasms but they are found very rarely in the deep lobe of parotid gland. Surgical intervention in these tumors is challenging because of the proximity of the facial nerve, and thus knowledge of the anatomy and meticulous surgical technique are essential.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 71-year-old female presented with a large asymptomatic mass, which had occupied the left facial area for over the past fifteen years, and she requested surgical excision for a cosmetically better facial appearance. The computed tomography (CT) scan showed a well-defined

Intraneural perineuriomas are rare benign neoplasms. The gene associated with neurofibromatosis 2 (NF2) is located on chromosome 22q12, and mutations in NF2 are commonly seen in soft tissue perineuriomas. However, an association between NF2 mutations and intraneural perineuriomas (INPs) has not been well established. We present a 20-year-old male with NF2, multiple schwannomas and an intraneural perineurioma in the radial nerve at the spiral groove. Sequencing of NF2, SMARCB1, and LZTR1 was performed and demonstrated loss of the long arm of chromosome 22 including NF2, SMARCB1, and LZTR1, and

BACKGROUND: Orbital and periorbital presentation is rare for malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors. These tumors are poorly defined spindle cell neoplasms of peripheral nerves and have not been reported to develop in the lacrimal gland to date.
AIM: To report a rare presentation of malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor in the orbital cavity.
CASE REPORT: A 65-year-old man was admitted with the chief complaint of prominent right eye. His symptoms began 16 months prior to his admission. He had obvious limited ocular motion in upgaze and lateral gaze directions, as well as diplopia in all

The phenotype of 165 gastrointestinal stromal tumours was studied by immunohistochemistry. In each case the phenotype was compared to the histological diagnosis. The phenotype was muscle in 49 tumours (30%), neural in 18 (11%), histiocytic in 20 (12%) and mixed in five (3%); 68 tumours (41%) were positive for vimentin only, four tumours had no markers and one tumour was positive for keratin only. Histologically, the tumours were classified as smooth muscle, probably smooth muscle, probably nerve sheath tumours or tumours of undetermined differentiation. In 30 histologically unequivocal muscle

Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) is an inherited neurocutaneous condition that predisposes to the development of peripheral nerve sheath tumors (PNST) including cutaneous neurofibromas (CNF), plexiform neurofibromas (PNF), atypical neurofibromatous neoplasms of uncertain biologic potential (ANNUBP), and malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors (MPNST). The Johns Hopkins NF1 biospecimen repository promotes the successful advancement of therapeutic developments for NF1-associated PNST through acquisition and genomic analysis of human tumor specimens. BACKGROUND: Malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors (MPNSTs) are rare malignant soft-tissue sarcomas arising from peripheral nerves. Little data exist regarding MPNST originating intracranially. Here, we present a 7th/8th nerve complex MPNST, discuss the treatment strategy and patient outcome, and provide a comprehensive review of existing literature.
METHODS: Using Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines, PubMed and crossed references were queried, yielding 37 publications from 1952 to the present. Fifty-three cases of primary intracranial and extra-axi
