OBJECTIVE: Injury of the external branch of the superior laryngeal nerve (EBSLN) is easily overlooked in thyroidectomy, and voice changes caused by the injury have a negative effect on an increasing number of patients. This study aimed to reduce the injury rate of EBSLN by expanding the sternothyroid-laryngeal triangle and standardizing the exploration procedure.
METHODS: A total of 520 patients who had undergone thyroidectomy at the First Affiliated Hospital of Nanchang University between September 2021 and April 2022 were analyzed. During the operation, the exposure rate of the EBSLN before

Huntington's disease (HD) is a neurodegenerative disorder caused by expansion of a polyglutamine (polyQ) stretch within the Huntingtin (Htt) protein. Pathogenic Htt disrupts multiple neuronal processes, including gene expression, axonal trafficking, proteasome and mitochondrial activity, and intracellular vesicle trafficking. However, the primary pathogenic mechanism and subcellular site of action for mutant Htt are still unclear. Using a Drosophila HD model, we found that pathogenic Htt expression leads to a profound overgrowth of synaptic connections that correlates directly with the levels

Controlled tissue expansion began as a concept based on primitive ideas and observations. Its application to breast reconstruction has played a major role in the tissue and psychologic rejuvenation following surgery for breast carcinoma. During the last several years, controlled expansion of tissue has been applied to many other anatomic sites treating many difficult reconstructive and excisional surgeries which heretofore were either impossible or required several stages to accomplish. As experience has grown, the use of tissue expansion has become safer and has been applied to many excisiona

This study aimed to systematically review evidence on the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings-particularly postoperative ones-that correlate with the clinical outcomes to assess the adequacy of decompression surgery for degenerative lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS). Few studies have evaluated postoperative MRI findings and their correlation with clinical outcomes following decompression surgery for degenerative LSS. A comprehensive literature search was performed employing search engines. We analyzed postoperative MRI findings to identify those that correlated with clinical outcomes. Our stu

BACKGROUND: Cerebellar ataxia, neuropathy, and vestibular areflexia syndrome (CANVAS) is caused by biallelic pathogenic repeat expansions in the RFC1 gene. Chronic cough can precede the neurological features of CANVAS by decades and, in some instances, may be the sole clinical manifestation. However, the prevalence of biallelic RFC1 repeat expansions among patients with unexplained chronic cough (UCC), as well as the diagnostic utility of targeted neurological screening in this setting, remains unclear.
METHODS: In this 6-month pilot study, 13 consecutive patients with UCC underwent a standar

Progressive myoclonic epilepsy is a heterogeneous group of disorders characterized by drug-resistant epilepsy, cognitive decline, and ataxia. Genetic testing is crucial for diagnosis, but the choice of test depends on the variant type. We present a case of an adult with a PME phenotype since age 17 years, remaining undiagnosed for 4 years because of improper genetic testing. His father had progressive ataxia with a spinocerebellar ataxia phenotype. The unique presentation, combined with autosomal dominant inheritance and anticipation, suggested dentatorubral-pallidoluysian atrophy. ATN1 gene p

Spinobulbar muscular atrophy (SBMA) is a late-onset disorder characterized by progressive muscle loss, degeneration of motoneurons in the spinal cord and brainstem, and partial androgen insensitivity. SBMA is directly correlated with the expansion of CAG repeats encoding a polyglutamine tract (polyQ) of extended length. The identification of polyQ expansion in SBMA led to the discovery of an entire class of neurodegenerative disorders. In fact, at least eight different diseases, including Huntington's disease, share a common molecular mechanism involving an expansion of a polyQ tract within di

We hypothesised that pieces of nerve that are normally trimmed away during graft repair could be a source of Schwann cells and used to create an autologous cell-containing nerve graft. To test the idea a transsection injury was made on the rat sciatic nerve. Seven days later, pieces from the proximal and distal stumps were used for immediate isolation of its non-neuronal cells. These cells, of which 80% were Schwann cells, were injected into a silicone tube bridging a 10 mm gap on the same nerve. Tubes containing cells showed superior regeneration of nerve fibres across the gap compared with t

The soft-tissue reconstruction and associated osteology of the North American therizinosaurian Nothronychus mckinleyi is updated. The cranial nerve topology is revised, bringing it more in line with coelurosaurs. The trunk of the trigeminal nerve is very short, with an incompletely intracranial trigeminal ganglion, an ophthalmic branch diverging anteriorly first, with later divergences of the maxillomandibular branches, following typical pathways. The facial nerve has been re-evaluated, resulting in a very typical configuration with an extracranial geniculate ganglion. The single foramen leadi

Between January 1st, 1979 and December 31st 1993, 2501 operations for benign diseases of the thyroid gland were performed. The documentation was done prospectively. The operation technique remained the same during these years. The recurrent laryngeal nerve wasn't routinely identified. All together we saw 0.6% permanent vocal cord palsies. The incidence of nerve paralysis was correlated to the size (weight), to the expansion of the goiter, to the performed operative procedure and to patients' age and gender.

BACKGROUND: Huntington's disease (HD) is a devastating heredoneurodegenerative disorder associated with a wide variety of neurological and psychiatric symptoms caused by an expanded CAG repeat in the HTT gene. The expansion mutation in HTT is dominantly transmitted and codes for a protein named huntingtin (htt).
HYPOTHESIS: One hypothesis, according to a multistep mechanism, is that the intergenerational transmission of the normal repeat size causes small, progressive CAG stretch elongations in the general population from one generation to another, until a critical pathological CAG repeat thr

Autoregulation of renal blood flow (RBF) was studied in rats that underwent equivalent blood volume expansion with saline (Sal; 5% body wt), 7% BSA solution (1.4% body wt), and reconstituted whole blood from donor rats (WBL; 1.4% body wt). Renal perfusion pressure (RPP) and renal neural reflexes were prevented by clamping RPP and sectioning the vagus, baro/chemoreceptor, and renal nerves. Sal and BSA expansion increased RBF by approximately 60%, whereas no effect was observed with WBL. RBF autoregulation was markedly attenuated after expansion with cell-free solutions, but no change occurred i

The aim of this study was to evaluate sensory nerve recovery and auto-mutilation after reconstruction of various lengths of nerve gaps in the sciatic nerve of the rat, using different techniques. Group 4, in which the longest nerve gap (15 mm) was reconstructed with a thin-walled p(DL-lactide-gamma-caprolactone) nerve guide filled with modified denatured muscle tissue, showed the best results in the electro-stimulation tests and signs of severe auto-mutilation were not observed. Even in the control group, in which a 10 mm nerve gap was left open, in two of the five rats improvement of the sens

BACKGROUND: Intestinal ischemia and reperfusion injury results in damage to elements critical to maintaining intestinal barrier function, including neurons and glia cells, which are part of the enteric nervous system (ENS). To limit inflammation, the ENS must be restored or replaced, yet the process by which this occurs is poorly understood. Multipotent progenitor cells called enteric nervous stem cells (ENSC) can differentiate into neurons or glia when stimulated. The ability of this cell population to respond to intestinal injury is unknown. In this study, we hypothesized that resolution of

Factors controlling cardiac sympathetic nerve activity (CSNA) in the normal state and those causing the large increase in activity in heart failure (HF) remain unclear. We hypothesized from previous clinical findings that activation of cardiac mechanoreceptors by the increased blood volume in HF may stimulate sympathetic nerve activity (SNA), particularly to the heart via cardiocardiac reflexes. To investigate the effect of volume expansion and depletion on CSNA we have made multiunit recordings of CSNA in conscious normal sheep and sheep paced into HF. In HF sheep (n = 9) compared with normal

The VER is compared with that of other neuroophthalmological examinations in 25 patients presenting lesions of the anterior optic pathways (of which 18 were of an expansive nature). The authors believe that visual field plotting and VER are indispensable complementary examinations, giving results which orientate subsequent investigations towards a chiasmatic or prechiasmatic syndrome. In 15 cases of chiasmatic syndrome of tumoral origin (thus in 30 optic nerves), visual fields and VER showed early pathological changes. In originally unilateral forms, VER changes are usually bilateral even when

The authors report the case of a 37-year-old woman in whom the trochlear nerve was transected during removal of a meningioma in the cavernous sinus and subsequently repaired by using microsurgical techniques. This patient presented with a tumor in the posterior part of the right cavernous sinus with expansion over the tentorium. Preoperatively, she suffered from partial deficit of the right trochlear nerve. Intraoperatively, the trochlear nerve was noted to be completely encased by the tumor and was totally divided during removal of the lesion. After tumor resection, the trochlear nerve was re
